480: Real Friends vs Deal Friends Jan 13, 2023
    Show notes

As an entrepreneur, it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that business is only one aspect of life. Your career and friend group can transition into one, which is exceptionally different than if you were working in a standard nine-to-five job.

Connecting with folks you want to be around - people that fill you with energy, provide lighthearted talk, and won’t judge you amid any downturns in your business - will give you the proper balance of enthusiasm in your life that no career can bring.

Being around, or being, a “leg humper” can help you succeed in business, but this does not constitute a true friendship. This does not mean you shouldn’t have people to reach out to for business questions, but don’t let these connections overpower your circle of true friends.

    478. Avoid These 4 Behaviors for a Thriving Relationship Dec 30, 2022
    Show notes

It is easy to get bogged down in your own unhappiness and try to direct it onto someone else in your life, particularly a partner. Rob and Kim discuss John Gottman's research on marriage, regarding this behavior and how it tends to create tension and ultimately can take the form of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling.

We need to be aware of these pitfalls and work on overcoming them within ourselves. After all, we cannot change anybody else but all of us have control over ourselves. Instead of expending energy on tinkering with fixing our spouse, think about developing self-awareness and making improvements from within that can ultimately benefit both yourself and any close connections we have with others.

    477. Supporting Your Spouse is the Key to Your Next Chapter Dec 23, 2022
    Show notes

Moving on to your next chapter can be an uneasy, yet exciting, experience, especially in a scenario where either you or your spouse wants a shift in their career. Rob and Kim share their experience having gone through this process over the past few years.

After crossing off quite a few items on their bucket list when they were younger and Rob working a day job that he now dreaded, Rob and Kim were focused on moving on to their next chapter. With Rob being the primary source of income, they were feeling torn between maintaining financial security and living the life they wanted.

Rob and Kim found it essential to create an environment in their current situation that was uplifting, encouraging, and still allowed joy. Kim found that her most important role in their situation was that of a supportive partner and to help strategize for their journey ahead - living in the “messy middle” for a while – while maintaining their current situation until their alternate sources of income were able to mature.

    476. Ditch the Stressed American Entrepreneur Mindset for a Happier Life Dec 16, 2022
    Show notes

Being an entrepreneur doesn't necessarily mean constantly hustling and stressing. In fact, it's quite the opposite that can be more beneficial in the long term. Rob and Kim moved from hustle-and-bustle Los Angeles to far more leisurely Italy. They noticed a huge difference in Rob's work-life balance that allowed him to better connect with his family, friends, and himself.

Wanting to extinguish the message of an “American Stressed Entrepreneur” being the norm, Rob and Kim suggest making time for yourself by going through a “life inventory”. This process helps you identify your passions and joys, so you can prioritize tasks accordingly and make sure your schedule allows time for both your personal and professional life. It can be challenging initially, but if done correctly, it will only help improve your quality of life and success in business!

    474. Fri-Date: Starting a New Chapter Oct 21, 2022
    Show notes

I’ve noticed a pattern where it seems like every 20 years or so people feel the need to reinvent themselves. I’ve talked to hundreds of people for this podcast, as well as in our Patreon membership, and it’s always the same: “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, but I feel like it’s time to start something else.” It’s hard to shed your identity and start a new chapter in your life, letting go of everything you’ve built before—but you don’t want to let yourself get stuck where you are. So we’re reinventing ourselves as well, talking about the next chapter of this podcast, a new podcast on the horizon, and how to overcome the fear of starting something new.

    473. Fri-Date: Helping KIDS Create & Live Their Dream Lives Oct 14, 2022
    Show notes

Our brand has been shifting over time to focus on living your dream life and allowing yourself to play bigger. One thing my wife Kim is starting to realize is how passionate she is about taking the personal development lessons we’ve learned and, instead of focusing on adults, teaching parents how to work with their kids to pass these lessons along. We recently spoke to our oldest daughter on the show about the lessons she picked up naturally while growing up, but what would happen if we were to pass some of those lessons on intentionally? In order to reach our goals there needs to be change, and that’s often incredibly difficult. But on the other side of that change, why not pass that new skill set on to your kids in an intentional way? That’s what we’re going to explore.

    472. Fri-Date: How to Play BIGGER in Every Part of Your Life Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

Whenever someone uses the phrase “playing bigger,” they’re probably referring to wealth or accumulation. Want the nicer car? Gotta play bigger. Want a second (or third or fourth) house? Time to play bigger. But what if it’s not about upgrading your house or your car, but your life? That’s what we’ve been doing, and from the outside, it’s not always apparent. Today we’re going to talk about the four major buckets where you could play bigger and how the benefits will be so much greater than if you’re just trying to acquire more.

In this Double Shot episode I talk about some books I’ve been reading recently, including Anti-Time Management, Atomic Habits, and Soundscapes, and the lessons I’ve learned from them. I also discuss some advice from Esther Hicks, crafting a vision when your current one isn’t exciting you, and starting out with damaging admissions.
