    FTN Episode 171 – 1,000 Sons in 60 Minutes – Is Magnus a Flying Baneblade? Dec 02, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareThis Wrath of Magnus set is awesome. It advances the story in ways I don’t think we long time gamers every thought we would see. We also get the first plastic primarch! He’s a daemon, but whatever.. They are just getting started.

    Hey guys,

Thousand Son players should be really happy about this release but it means a lot to Chaos and Daemon players in general. I think this book will definitely see some play.

We on the show don’t agree about the power level of the big red man Magnus. His point cost does severely limit how your army can be built but I don’t care. I think he is a truck that is going to turn the tides of battle in the same way the Super Tuna does. Meaning – he’s great… but he’s not unkillable and won’t just win the game by himself.

The new pink horrors are a real issue. Their rules are going to be pretty dern frustrating to people until they learn how to deal with them. I think the intent is for them NOT to have malefic powers but due to the way the BRB is worded – I think they’re going to get them for many RAW players out there.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

The Finishing Moves segment is about stubble and shaved heads. This is a stumper for a lot of people there – me included. We go over some tips and tricks on how to pull this off and really help give you some separation from the field.

FTN Bonus Episode 17 – Player Spotlight with Mike Twitchell Nov 25, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareMike is one of the best Warhammer players I have ever encountered. We try to pick his brain a bit and give a different perspective on army list design and capturing mission objectives.

    Hey Everyone,

Mike has been a player on the scene for many editions of 40k. He’s been great at all of them. Even with being a terror on the table top, he has always been a joy to play. Mike captures the best aspects of our hobby.

I’ve known Mike for a number of years and I am happy to feature him on the show this week. He’s a regular at major events on the East Coast. He is a safe bet to take home one of the major prize categories whenever he is in the field.

Andrew does the driving for a pretty detailed interview on how Mike ‘attacks’ each tournament format. Even if you feel like you’re solid on these concepts, it is still nice to hear it from a proven champion. Mike has taken home the gold at several major events over the last couple of years and pulled down countless local awards.

Mike (Twitch) is also a community leader. He organizes events in his area while supporting surrounding one organized by others. This goes back to me saying that Twitch captures all the best aspects of our hobby. He is truly community minded and one of the reasons 40k is still going strong, in our area, today.

We will be doing more of these Player Spotlight episodes in the coming weeks. Please let us know the types of questions you’d like us to ask.

FTN Bonus Episode 16 – Gav Thorpe Joins Us on the Mic Nov 22, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareCheck out this special Bonus Episode of Forge The Narrative. Gav Thorpe is a venerable figure in our hobby and has been a part of the scene for a long time. Join us as we go all the way from Dark Angels, to Age of Sigmar, then to Eldar. It’s a great show.

    Hey Guys,

Azrael is out now in a sweet limited edition production from the Black Library. We caught up with Gav the day after the Black Library open day so he is able to talk with us about all the sweet things they spoiled there.

I jump right into it with some hard hitting questions but don’t worry, we keep this spoiler free.

Gav talks with us about not only his current projects but also a few things he has coming out in the future. We get to discuss a little bit about the 2016 Advent Calendar from BL and some really neat Eldar pieces he has in the works.

It is pretty neat to pick his brain about why he chose to write about some of the subjects he has. It is even neater to see that stuff come to life the way it does on the page. Gav has brought a lot of color and depth to characters that had previously been on the fringe.

If you were curious if we talk about Primarchs and upcoming Primarch releases…. Don’t worry, we do.

FTN Bonus Episode 15 – Reece from Frontline Gaming Takes Over! Nov 20, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareCheck out this special Bonus Episode of Forge The Narrative. It is always fun to talk with Reece and the other guys from Frontline Gaming. We talk about the LVO, the tournament scene, how influences from other areas of gaming, such as the rise of lol smurfs, is impacting the game, and a lot more.

    Hey Everyone,

The Las Vegas Open has tickets on sale right now. It is truly a world-class event with tons of stuff happening the whole weekend. Did I mention that it’s happening in Las Vegas? There is a little something for everyone there.

The event, for me, officially kicks off the beginning of the Warhammer 40k Tournament 2017 season. It has become an absolute destination event put on by top-notch folks.

In this episode, we get to talk about how the tournament scene is changing a little now that Games Workshop and their Community Team are getting more involved. You’ll even be able to purchase Forge World at this event! And as always plenty of advice and guidance is available for newbies to the gaming world, like Gnarly Guides to The Outer Worlds and Minecraft. Don’t be intimidated if you’ve never been to an event like this before, they welcome newcomers with open arms.

I personally thank Reece and his crew for bringing us gaming surfaces that we can spill drinks on… I may have been guilty of this a few times. Check out their mats and other gaming accessories at their webstore. You can also look on sites like 25pc.com to find the best gaming keyboard under 100, and get yourself kitted out.

We get into the ‘reasons’ the tournament scene is so important to us and the challenges that face it moving forward. It is sort of hard to engage people for live video streaming and the like for a game like ours, but there almost no better game to place face to face.

FTN Episode 170 – Aint No Party Like a Warzone Party Nov 18, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareWarzone: Atlanta is behind us and now it’s time to look towards next year. You can catch the streams over on Twitch: FTN Twitch Stream.

    Hey all,

Two Finishing Moves segments in this episode! We start the show with a Finishing Moves segment about script and scroll work on miniatures. It is no where near as hard as it looks. Please let us know if you try it. The first time may be a little crazy looking but it just takes practice. If there are any finishing moves that you would like to hear about please let us know.

In part of the WZ: ATL recap we talk a bit about what made the event so successful. It is in no small part due to our sponsors. We will continue to talk about them and how that these sorts of things would not be possible and would not be as fun as they are – without the sponsors. Please check out Sabol Designs and their Army Transports – the original army storage solutions. I personally use these bags as well.

After the success of our event we’ve gotten a lot of questions and attention about the format. If you are curious and haven’t checked it out yet please have a look in the Resource section of the Warzone: Atlanta website.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

The second Finishing Moves segment is all about painting for points. A lot of the good tournament painting rubrics are objective in their scoring. Meaning that they are not just ‘in the eye of the beholder’ to make sure you get all the points you can. Painting points are some of the only points at an event that you can completely control. We give a bit of advice on how to walk down the checklist of the events you plan to attend.

FTN Bonus Episode 14 – An Interview with Graham McNeill! Nov 16, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareCheck out this special Bonus Episode of Forge The Narrative – We have the honor of sitting down with the legendary and prolific Graham McNeill.

    Hey Everyone,

Graham was nice enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to speak with us. He talks candidly about his early work on the Horus Heresy series and the top secret design meetings for the project. I wasn’t able to pry any secrets about Magnus the Red out of him, but you’re still going to want to listen.

Graham is able to share some wonderful insight into some of his characters and his general approach to writing fantasy and sci-fi. He has an impressive list of credits to his name and we get to touch on most of them in this interview.

I even get to fanboy out a little and let him know his book Mechanicum was the final push I needed to started an Ad-mech army of my own.

By the end of this show you might find yourself empathizing with the ‘bad guys’ in the Horus Heresy series – if you didn’t already! The characters in these series are some of the best around.

We finish up the show talking about Graham’s current favorite character from his writings, but you’re gonna have to listen to find out who that is.

FTN Episode 169 – Guns on the Front or Back? How Do You Do Your Land Raider? Nov 10, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareWarzone: Atlanta is Nov 11th-13th here! We will be streaming live starting on Friday evening for the Horus Heresy Combat Patrol event. Here is a link to the FTN Twitch Stream

    Hey Everyone,

We deal with the least favorite subject of anyone who owns an airbrush in this episode – Cleaning… We have some different opinions on how often this is required but we all agree it has to be done. Except Andrew…

I finally received my November White Dwarf magazine and it continues to impress me. They are very informative and entertaining. There is SO MUCH in them that it is almost impossible to digest on the first read through. They are perfect for for the coffee table or reading room. If you are not already a subscriber, I certainly understand… The old White Dwarfs were basically just catalogues and the incarnation before these didn’t pack enough punch for the buck. These… These are a real honest to goodness magazine worth the time and the money.

There is no break in this show… We are basically jamming all the way through because Paul is nose down in final Warzone: Atlanta prep. I apologize in advance for the rush job on the edit but I hope you still find the episode enjoyable.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

But… There is no finishing moves in this episode! I regret to say that, but it will back in a double sized episode next week where we will be back to our normal routine.

FTN Episode 168 – The Top 5 Paints You Need on Your Workbench Nov 04, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareWarzone: Atlanta is Nov 11th-13th. We talk a little about this sold out capacity event. Then we can’t help but gush over the 40k rules for the Sisters of Silence and Custodes before finishing up with the hobby segment.

    Yo,

The first few minutes we talk about our event Warzone: Atlanta. It was great last year and we’re gonna do our best to make it great this year as well. We have two Friday night events (which tickets are still available for) and a two day 40k Grand Tournament on Saturday and Sunday

We give a mission run down on the Horus Heresy 30k Combat Patrol Event. Three quick and easy to learn missions all themed around the first large scale betrayal at Istvaan 3.

After the break we get a little day dreamy about the new Sisters of Silence and the Custodes. These guys are everything the Paladins used to be at the end of 5th edition. I know I’ll be painting up at least 10 of these guys.

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

The Finishing Moves segment is about Flames and Smoke. Its interesting because you pretty much paint these effects the opposite of what you would do for lenses and gems. We go over a few techniques and then promise to list the top 5 paints you always want to have around.

    1. Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil – I am listing these together because they basically produce the same effect depending on the color you want. A runner up here is Secret Weapon’s Soft Body Black. I use this when I need to be super careful where the shade goes.
    2. Nihilakh Oxide – this was sort of a sleeper hit. It has tons of uses, don’t be afraid to get experimental with it.
    3. Ceramite White – All GW white paints are good but sometimes you want to make sure it goes on white in one coat. A good runner up here is Vallejo Air White. It brushes on as well as it feeds through the airbrush
    4. Leadbelcher – it is a catch all dark silver metallic color. I know this isn’t much of a ‘tip’ but you’ll use it on almost every model
    5. Steel Legion Drab – I use this for all my bases. It sounds like a real boring color but it goes with almost anything. It looks great with almost any stick on tufts or lighter drybrush colors to really give your bases some eye-catching looks.

    FTN Episode 167 – The Custodes Invade 40k! Oct 28, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareThe Burning of Prospero box set is live! It is such a beautiful box set. Rules for 40k and formations dropped today on the official Warhammer 40k Facebook page.

    Hey guys,

We chat a bit about the Burning of Prospero. You can find the rules for the 40k use of these crazy awesome models directly from Games Workshop here.

Warzone: Atlanta is just around the corner Nov 11-13th. On this episode we go over the schedule just a little bit and discuss the 30k Combat Patrol event happening Friday night. I am really happy to say how good the prizes for this event and the main event are. I really love giving stuff away. Rules for the 30k Combat Patrol event are over at warzoneatlanta.com.

I really want to give a shout out to the GW community team. These folks have been killing it recently like leaps and bounds more than we have seen or expected from Games Workshop in YEARS! I think they have some great people on staff who genuinely care about us customers and gamers. It is a breath of fresh air. I’m talking about everything from feeding us great content on their social media, quick turn around of rules queries and even their own ‘spoilers.’ Keep up the good work guys.. pip pip or whatever you folks say in the UK 🙂

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

The Finishing Moves segment is all about lenses and lights this time. We have Adam talk a bit about his techniques and the rest of us share some more ‘low tech’ solutions to this common problem.

FTN Episode 166 – Sons of the Forge Interview with Nick Kyme Oct 20, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareDo we go backwards before we go forward? This past weekend we ran a new and returning player tournament with a few army list restrictions. If the tournament scene is lagging in your area (and that’s not what we are really seeing around the country) then maybe tailoring your event is what you need to do. We also have NICK KYME in this episode!!!!!oneone

    Yo yo,

We talk a lot about the people you meet at tournaments and the overall spirit of community you encounter when you go to local events or travel along the national circuit. In this hobby, to me, this is one of the most enjoyable elements.

I love tearing people’s heads off on the table, be sure… But the friendships you forge over the years are great. It is really cool running into the same people a few times out of the year pushing toys around the table.

The middle segment, staring around 32 minutes in I have the pleasure of speaking again to Nick Kyme. He gives a little bit of behind the scenes talk about his new book Sons of the Forge. His take on the concept of a Space Marine is pretty fresh and I think you’ll enjoy it. If you were ever curious about Vulkan’s artifacts you do not want to miss this!

The Finishing Moves segment is sponsored by Gamemat.eu. Their Industrial Terrain set is great and they offer a product that is pre-painted. This, combined with their mats, is a great way to get playing with professional looking game boards fast.

In this hobby segment we talk about ways to make your unit leader, champion, best bug, tallest pygmy or whatever stand out. This is something a lot of tournaments give points for on their painting checklist. There are some easy ways to scoop these points up.
