FTN Episode 158 – Deathwatch Hit or Miss? Aug 25, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareEpisode 158 is here! Total Hobby.. Warhammer 40k podcast where we combine tactics and hobby talk all in the same place.

    Yo yo,

The Deathwatch codex is proving to be a little more dynamic than we thought but the jury is still out. Paul thinks they will be regulated to ally status while Andrew thinks there is a huge case to build out a dynamic MSU style army. We close the show with the Finishing Moves segment where we focus on decal work and the different ways to use paint to spruce them up.

This MSU focuses in on the ability to take single model units. So in standard Combined Arms Detatchment you can have an HQ, two troop units and then 3 single man elite squads and 3 single man fast attack squads. Multiply this by the number of CADs you take and the diversity and MSU numbers start to rack up.

These units have the potential to be very diverse and handle lots of different threats on the table while simultaneously being a threat themselves. Single Terminators can get a lot of work done in the back field acting as a mobile heavy weapon platform or just being a disruption element. A single bike with a power weapon could time up a 5 man marine squad a certainly a unit of jet bikes – if he doesn’t die on the overwatch.

Moving to the ally argument – the Dominus Aegis is pretty cool. If the MODEL doesn’t move in the movement phase then your whole unit gains a 4+ invulnerable save until the start of the next movement phase. This doesn’t specific ‘Deathwatch’ unit. It is any unit the character joins. This is a pretty significant reduction in character tax for armies that were already taking Azreal from the Dark Angels.

Overall, I think the codex is a hit. You can technically have a whole army of specialist marines who operate like the kill team game. I can see it being a pretty cinematic experience for folks who like that. In the right missions and at the right point level this book can be powerful. On the show we mention that we can certainly see a path to victory with this book in a 3 round event. The jury is still out on a 5+ round major. What do you think?

FTN Episode 157 – Another Codex Doing it Better than Chaos Aug 19, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareEpisode 157 is here and basically on time!! It is nice to be back on track.

    Hey everyone,

In the first segment we remind everyone we have some shirts for sale on the website. We also give a quick mention to our friends over at Mindworm games. Their skirmish/rpg style table top game is just about ready to go. The rules are up for free over on their site.

Deathwatch is still on our minds. The unit entries for this give flexibility that we haven’t seen since back in the 3.5 edition Chaos Marine dex. We even sort of compare the Black Shields to an old school CSM champ. You spend a lot of points on him but you expect him to get some work done.

It is interesting to point out that the Black Shield is NOT the unit champ. Before you add anyone else to the unit you still have to characters that can help you manipulate the challenge mechanic to make sure that your BS can wreck face. The two sword configuration looks cool but I think the Hammer is where it’s at.

Taking single model units that can actually make an impact on the game can be annoying for your opponent and this can be done in all the major squads in the book – Vanguard Vets, Terminators, Bike Squads, etc.. Going back to the original point – you can take weapons that actually matter on these dudes too. If you take a formation that allows you to combine all these units into one – they get to share their unit abilities like Split Fire and Fearless.. That doesn’t suck.

I’m hot on the Corvus Blackstar. For 5 points you get to take a piece of wargear that allows you to re-roll cover if you’re jinking. FIVE POINTS?! Have you guys unlocked any super combos yet? I really like being able to take as many Librarians as I want. It seems like these guys will pair very well with Marines, Inquis and other Imperial armies as an ally force.

FTN Episode 156 – Deathwatch, Attack of the Flying Turtles! Aug 16, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareEpisode 156 is better late than never!! Thanks for the patience guys. We are back to normal now. Very sorry for the delay.

    Hey guys,

This is coming out a little late, we recorded this when the Deathwatch stuff was still a bit of rumor and conjecture. Please forgive us for anything we get wrong. The Finishing Moves hobby segment is in the last 15 minutes.

We talk about a few of the things we find exciting about the new book and a few combos, like dropping frag cannons on people. The book suffers from being an elite army in world full of spammy efficient units.

Is that bad? Not really. These guys are, in my mind, meant to be an ally force and they fit right in with all of the other inquisition style armies out there.

The new transport’s ability to carry bikes is kind of exciting. You can pair this with the ability to hide a terminator in the mix and a jump pack guy in the mix and before you know it you’ve got a unit that can start the game in a ready for take off Storm Turtle (which is a steal dollar wise, btw) and re-rolly your charge roll after you move 12 and get out 6.

Of course everyone in the world can see this coming. It is like the Overhand Right from way downtown but whatever.. These models look cool.

FTN Episode 155 – Nick Kyme in the spotlight! Aug 05, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareWe cover EVERYTHING on this show. Special guest, Nick Kyme joins us for an interview and them we discuss the powerful things the new Nid FAQ opened up for them.

    Yo,

The first 15 minutes of the show we go over a few upcoming events and talk about the fact that we have some FTN Shirts available for sale over at www.forgethenarrative.net on the FTN Merch Page.

Paul gets a chance to speak with Nick Kyme from the Black Library. We talk about all things Salamanders and also get a chance to talk a little bit about the inspiration behind his stories.

Nick is a great guy and I’m glad I got to sit down with him for a few minutes on my trip to Warhammer World.

After that we get our hands on the new Tyranid FAQ. Its a short read but it opens up a couple of very powerful and potentially game winning things the big bugs can do. Please let us know how you guys implement or fight against this new stuff.

In this episode’s Finishing Moves segment we briefly tackle glow effect or Object Source Lighting. We cover, the best we can in audio, some quick and painless methods for achieving this effect.

FTN Episode 154 – Interview with John French and Serious Warhams Jul 29, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareWe cover EVERYTHING on this show. Special guest, John French, sits down for a chat then we move on to tournament tactics and painting talks.

    Yo,

When I say we cover everything in this show I mean it. Paul and John French, from the Black Library, talk during the first part of the show. He talks about his own armies and his experience writing about some of the most legendary figures of all time.

Several of us just returned from the ATC in Tennessee, USA. With that many people and all those different lists represented it is hard not to come away with inspiration for new tech and new army ideas.

We are happy to report that a lot of our list ideas ‘worked’ and we share a few elements during the tactics/tournament section. Please let us know if you end up trying any of these out.

It is very difficult to make talk about painting seem exciting but we’re trying something new on this show that I think I’ll call ‘Finishing Moves.’ We talk about the anxiety that some people feel before they start to weather an otherwise finished model.

We get somewhat explicit about a few of our techniques for this and the painters on the show approach the concept a little differently. I start the topic with the idea that I decided to weather a model after it was mostly complete.

FTN Bonus Episode 11 – Jervis Johnson Speaks! Jul 25, 2016
    Show notes

FTN small squareTune in for a very special bonus episode with the legendary Jervis Johnson speaking about Stormcloud Attack and the Generals Handbook. You don’t want to miss this!

    Hey Guys,

I got to speak to the man himself about two of the latest offerings from Games Workshop – Stormcloud Attack and the General’s Handbook for Age of Sigmar.

Jervis talks very candidly about these two game systems and what they offer to players.

While these games are worlds apart (literally) they give gamers and hobbyist new ways to get figures into action. It is amazing to see this level of support for all of the different ways to play and use the models on the table top.

My impressions from this conversation is that there is a huge push from GW to fully support all modes of suggested play for their games. You want to play casual – they will make content for you. You want to play competitively – they will make content for you. You want to create cinema like battles and campaigns – they will make content for you.

Hopefully we see more of this stuff in the future. The company is showing an unprecedented level of community involvement and it really does my heart glad to see it. I hope you enjoy the conversation I had with Jervis. He is an incredibly nice person and I was ecstatic to get the opportunity to sit down with him for a few minutes.

FTN Episode 153 – Will Sigmar Lead the Way for 40k? Jul 21, 2016
    Show notes

Episode 153 is here, download it now! Tournament and Hobby talk all in the same place. Say it ain’t so!

    Yo yo,

The more I look at the Order Battletome Sylvaneth I see it screaming at me as a future template for 40k codexes.

Everything about this book attempts to embrace the concept of using the army how you want to do it. Want to pick your warlord trait?? Go ahead. Want to leave your spells up to the dice gods? Roll away.. Or pick.. Up to you.

I really like that. Personally, I think random rolls can be good and create exciting games. But the more competitive we try to be the more that random rolls cause me to pull my hair out. Its a pretty big double edge sword.

I am not going to claim that one way is better than another but I think it is absolutely great that Games Workshop has figured out a way to appeal to multiple sects of gamers all in one book. If this tactic is successful it stands to reason we’d see something similar in 40k.

We have a lot of excitement for the ATC event happening in Tennessee this weekend too. It is hard to hide and we do quite a bit of talking about it in every segment. Good luck to everyone attending and we hope to see you there!

Episode 152 is here, download it now! Tournament and Hobby talk all in the same place. Say it ain’t so!

    Heya,

I open the show this week talking to Dave Taylor from the Nova Open Charitable Foundation. The talk lasts about 26 minutes. Hope you enjoy it!

Dave has been in the hobby for a LONG time and is one of the best painters, converters and all around good guys in the business. In this interview we mostly talk about the current charity offerings. You can find them here. Tickets are only a buck or two and go to a good cause.

You can buy tickets from anywhere and if you’re lucky enough to win, you can have it sent anywhere too!

The second half of the show is just me and ole PuppyPants, Andrew. We had a tech issue this week and had to audible to record in the middle of the day..

We go over a few gems we rediscovered in Imperial Armor 13 and then spend some time talking about the Warhammer 40k ATC event missions. Its hard to make a one size fits all recommendation for things like this but we go over a few things that we think any winning general is going to want to know.

Episode 151 is here, download it now! Tournament and Hobby talk all in the same place. Say it ain’t so!

    Yo guys,

Finally…. We are back. I apologize for the gap in episodes as I was traveling for the last couple of weeks. I was able to hit Warhammer World and it was AWESOME.

The first part of the show we talk a little bit about my trip and then gush over the beautiful Sylvaneth models. Age of Sigmar is really coming into its own with the upcoming release of the General’s Handbook and I’m excited.

The second part of the show we are joined by the venerable Gav Thorpe. He talks with Chris and I about his upcoming book and his storied time with Games Workshop starting from the early 90s.

It is really nice to be back and it and to be able to lead off with Gav is great.

Please give the show a listen and let us know what you think. Thank you.

FTN Episode 150 – Do You Even Dreadnought? Jun 16, 2016
    Show notes

Episode 150 is here, download it now! Tournament and Hobby talk all in the same place. Say it ain’t so!

    Hey guys,

We get to the first break early in this show so I can talk to the amazing Frank Turner. He came though Atlanta and gave me the opportunity to talk to him backstage at the Tabernacle theater down town. This interview part has almost nothing to do with 40k, but totally worth the listen. Since we’re on episode 150 I thought it would be cool to mix it up a bit with a music talk.

If you are not already familiar with his music please check it out and if you can make it to one of his shows.. even better. This dude is absolutely brilliant.

After the interview with Frank we get right back into the 40k talk discussing the hopeful feelings we have for all Dreadnoughts in the near future. These things are just too cool to keep sitting on the shelves.

GW hit us again this week with the Spaces Wolves FAQ. Poor old Logan Grimnar.. Once a staple of he table its possible that we may never see him again.

Please give the show a listen and let us know what you think. Thank you.
