FTN Episode 343 – New 40k Points review and Special Segment With Duncan Rhodes Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

This is another double sized episode! We open the show with a segment about the sweeping point increases in Warhammer 40k 9th Edition. In the middle of the show we’re joined by mini painting rock star Duncan Rhodes before coming back with the regular gang to continue our thoughts on the new state of 40k.

    Hey folks,

Some big point changes are coming down the pipe for every faction. EVERY FACTION! There is a clear move by the designers to slim the game down a bit. It’s interesting. We could have just said ‘we all play 1750 now’ but that seems to be less well received than keeping everyone’s idea that we seem to like saying 2000 points. 2000 points won’t buy you as much right now.

I expect this to change over time. We might not remember that far back but this is very much like Index 40k from the start of 8th edition. Outside of a few outliers that were changed with the early Erratas, like the rule of 3, the game was fairly balanced. Now the cycle begins anew. We all secretly hope we’re the first to benefit from Codex Creep, ha!

In the middle of the show we are joined by the amazing Duncan Rhodes. He gives us some insight on what he and Rodger have been up to the last few months. It’s an absolute pleasure to speak with him. He’s a phenomenal painter and ambassador for this hobby. It’s cool to be able to see him stretch his legs and go where his hobby inspiration takes him.

We come back with Adam, Red and Paul to continue our grind through the points.

We don’t cover everything but we talk about a few things important to us. I’m pretty excited to try a few big mini BA games where I push around a few 8 man Sanguinary Guard squads backed up by super characters and Dreadnoughts.

FTN Episode 342 – Dan Abnett Interview!! I repeat – Dan Abnett is on this Show! Jul 11, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Dan Abnett joins us this week for a wonderful chat. We are incredibly honored to have him on and you don’t want to miss this. Later in the show Adam, Red and Paul talk about assault in 9th Edition Warhammer 40k. This is a jam packed DOUBLE sized episode.

    Hey all,

We kick the show off with the legendary Dan Abnett. It was such a joy to have him on and we hope you enjoy it too. We talk about his current and past works and dive deep into some of the things he enjoys.

We get to hear just a tad about what it’s like being in the Hours Heresy writer’s room and his interaction with the other authors as they share characters to create this amazing series that has captivated us for decades.

Like I mentioned above this is a giant double sized episode. The last half of the show we talk about Assault in 9th. Counter Assaults has been afforded whole new set of luxuries that will make the ABC General (always be charging) have to be even more careful that they were before

This edition seems to be shaping up to benefit ‘multi purpose’ units. Quality unit will either need to be aggressively pointed or be able to tangle in both the shooting and assault phases. We’ll have another episode coming shortly behind this one talking about army list creation and the new points.

We work in a few comments about a couple of the new stand out Stratagems from War of the Spider and Engine War. Admech and Custodes are definitely factions to watch,

    FTN Episode 341 – 40k 9th Edition Review – Part 1 – Big Changes to Assault Jul 05, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Here.. We.. Go… The rules for Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition are up on the Warhammer Community page now. In this episode we give our initial impressions about the biggest changes and what they may mean to you. Ultimately the game is cleaner and the changes promote better in game interactions. We think you’re gonna love it but a few of these things will take some getting used to.

    Hey folks,

Surprise! It’s a back to back episode!!! Do not adjust your sets. Please make sure and d/l both episodes this week. The revelations about 9th edition are hot.

There are some serious changes to Assault to the point where some pundits are saying the Charge Phase is dead. I beg to differ but make no mistake.. it is different for sure. The changes seem to be lined up to give some fun back to your opponent but what remains to be seen is if the fun is still in it for the Charger. I hope so.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

In the first part of the show we basically oogel over the models again and speculate how everything will find a home out of the new box set. It certainly will.

More subtle changes come in the form of the Psychic Phase. You have to commit as soon as you choose to start manifesting powers with a psyker. It’s minor but this is one of those things you can be burned with if you don’t get used to it early on.

FTN Episode 340 – Will You Get Caught Out of Coherency? Yes! Jul 03, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We recorded this show before the deluge of 40k 9th edition hit yesterday. Our next show is coming out soon but you don’t want to miss this! We talk about the perils of Unit Coherency. We also have an awesome segment on Women in Wargaming in the middle of the show. Let’s go!

    Hey all,

In the first part of the show we talk about the unit coherency revelations we saw this week. These seem subtle at first but will have some DRAMATIC consequences if you aren’t careful. Here’s a news flash, not everyone is careful. Don’t get yourself hung out to dry.

In the middle of the show I get to listen in on some of the challenges females are overcoming in our wargaming community. We’re joined by three community leaders. Charlotte Hamilton, Jen Aspden and Tanya Gates. Please check them out. I’m very grateful for them coming on and providing some excellent insight to the community.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

In the last part of the show we touch on just how open army list creation feels to us right now. Things that we absolutely NOT viable before may make it to the table again. As someone who owns two mauler fiends I’m excited, ha!

In the practical element of the game some of the ‘jewels’ of our collection get picked up round one. That is going to happen – we play a game designed around attacking and removing models, it’s cool, but we do want to actually have the option of playing with these later in the game sometimes. I feel like the change to strategic reserves gives us this option while also maintaining a narrative element if we choose to look at it like that.

FTN Episode 339 – Do I Use My +1’s Now or After You Give me a -1? Jun 27, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We talk about new new preorder models and what we know about the Inquisitors and the new Dense Cover Rules for #new40k. At the end the show we talk about how to get more use out of your Skorpius Dunestrider kit. Spoiler – you can make it completely modular with no magnets.

    Hey hey,

We talk about how cool the new Inquisitor looks and then jump right into the new terrain rules.

We ponder about the ‘length’ of the wording and how that gives a lot of gamers pause in 40k because we are used to some people having a poor experience with people misinterpreting the wordy rules. I don’t think were lined up for that. I think that once we get some awareness out there on how its supposed to work we’ll all know how it works and we’ll have fun with it. Don’t sweat it folks!

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

We sort of talk about the compromises that organizers may make when they are defining the terrain for their events. Absolutely do the same thing in your home games. It’s better to get the ‘function’ from a sketchy piece of terrain and eventually build the look of the terrain up over time than to not be playing with the new rules when they come out.

Terrain makes the game. It gives us a dynamic play experience that makes so many more army lists viable and present interesting generalship issues for each player.

FTN Episode 338 – It’s Okay to Stare – The New Models are So Good! Jun 20, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The guys from Lorehammer join is for the middle segment this week. This is the first time we’ve spoken on a call and it was a blast. The rest of the show has Adam, Red and Paul drooling over thew new models for the Necrons and Marines. Wow. I mean.. who isn’t already thinking about these things in their own personal color schemes?

    Hey folks,

The first part of the show I address the audio issues from last week. So sorry for how that turned out. It seemed to get worse after the show was published.. ugh! But hey, it’s back to normal now. Download this episode 🙂

We basically do a little theory hammer about the new models and the impact they may have on the game. We talk about how gorgeous they are, of course, but we also do some pondering on the base size and how subtle things like that can play out big in your games.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

In the middle part of the show the guys from Lorehammer join us. Mark and Eric we so fun to chat with. They have an amazing show and I implore you to check them out. Their enthusiasm pours through the speakers. We talk a lot about Necrons.

Speaking of Necrons we talk a ton about our appreciation for the new Necron models and spend some time wishlisting over what we hope they turn out to be. Red plays Necrons so it’s fun to pick his brain about what we think the army needs.

FTN Episode 337 – Does A Shorter Board Mean A Shorter Game? Jun 13, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

It’s Red and Paul this week talking about how awesome a shorter board might be for Close Combat armies. Vehicles getting buffs and being able to shoot into close combat might balance that back out though.. At the end of the show we chat about buying and selling armies getting ready for 9th Edition

    Hey all,

It’s just Red and Paul for the main segments this week. John Hickton joins us in the middle segment for a community spotlight talking about how he’s getting ready for 9th. I bet that he was crazy excited since he plays Tyranids and I was right.

Does a smaller board make for smaller games? I don’t think it will play out that way but we are going to accelerate the initial games by essentially giving close combat armies a free turn of movement. This means they are gonna get in there QUICK. They’ll be rolling lots of dice sooner so maybe the game doesn’t speed up at all. That’s been hinted at a bit already and we don’t go into that aspect during the show but it’s something to think about.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

We discuss the dramatic impact of 12 inch auras. That is going to take a bit of getting used to.

At the back of the show we talk about the secondary market of figures. It’s hard to cover all aspect but this is a bit of a primer or what to expect if you’re thinking of turning this into a new edition new you sort of situation.

FTN Episode 336 – Will 9th Edition Be The Best Edition Ever? Jun 06, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The new edition is looking pretty stellar. We have several high profile guests on this week to talk about it. We start the guest cavalcade with Jim Vesal, followed by Miniwargaming Dave and then our partner in broadcasting Peter the Falcon. You don’t want to miss this.

    Hey folks,

Adam and Paul kick the show off in our normal way then we jump to a segment with super player Jim Vesal. Adam tries to coin a moniker for him but doesn’t quite hit the mark. Check back in next week to see what we land on.. ha!

After another segment with the regular desk we jump into an hilarious chat with Miniwargaming Dave. Dave is always fun to talk with and this was no exception. We’re honored to have him on and I think you’re really going to like his insights and what he’s hoping to do in this edition.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

We move almost directly into a segment with Peter Colosimo from 40kstats.com His take on these things is refreshing. We get to cast off our anecdotal evidence and grasp the cold hard facts. We recorded this moments after we had some of the matched play news leaked so we’re both sort of in shock.

With the ever evolving news coming from GW on this edition a couple of thoughts or speculations are dated – even though they ended up being true, ha! But I just wanted to mention that so you know we’re staying up to the minute to bring you the best coverage we can.

FTN Episode 335 – #New40k Hopes and Dreams – What Are Yours? May 30, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We’re joined by several 40k notables this week. It’s a fun series of conversations about what we hope makes its way into Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition. We hope you like all the guests this week. We go over the Studio Q&A and discuss the news from Engine War.

    Hey all,

The first special guest is Stephen Box from Vanguard Tactics. He and I recorded moments after the Q&A and were still reeling from the reveals. To know that nothing is being phased out from 8th right now is freaking amazing. It keeps the wheels turning on army list design. Expect some great things from Stephen as we know more.

In between the special guests Adam and Paul share our thoughts on the Q&A too.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

Archon Skari is next on the special guest list. I love chatting with him. He’s such a positive force in the hobby and always has been. Check him out if you aren’t familiar already.

Last week I said that Adam and were executed about the changes to Command Points. I meant excited. But you get the idea. Executed works too. Ha! After Skari good ole Val Heffelfinger joins us to give his thoughts on 9th. Val is absolutely awesome and such a low key champion of this hobby we love so much. It’s always good to have him on the show.

    FTN Episode 334 – Warhammer 40k 9th Edition Reactions May 24, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

WOW! If you missed it or didn’t think you needed to watch it please go watch the Warhammer 40k 9th Edition teaser trailer. It is amazing! The best animation we’ve seen out of GW yet. It’s got us pumped. We run down our reactions to the 9 things you need to know about 9th.

    Hey guys,

We are also doing live shows now. This is available in the replay on Twitch and the FTN Youtube page. We’ll post times on Paul’s twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Live streams start up again very soon. Please subscribe if you haven’t already! Check out the new FTN homepage too.

We jump right into the 40k 9th coverage after a brief intro. On the show I ask you to check out my friend’s webstore. It would really help them out and it can be found here. Grand Adventures is one of those stores we all wished we had in our town. It would mean a lot to me if you checked them out. Please do!

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

One of the major take aways from the preview is ‘being able to enjoy’ 40k at any size. This is interesting to me because we have ’40k in many forms’ right now with Kill Team, Necromunda, different point games, power level play etc. The reasons some off these formats aren’t as popular – to me- is that they don’t really capture what 40k on a 4×6 table is. Will this any size option do that now? I hope so.

Adam and I are incredibly executed about the change to Command Points. Some armies like Custodes and Harlequins struggle to get the CP needed to fund their Stratagems. To make them work you often have to dip into another codex to fill slots to get the CP. Sounds like this is changing in a big way. It sounds like we’ll all start from an even level and use them to potentially pay for whatever advantages we think we need in our list design. It sounds awesome.

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

There is so much to unpack from the preview. We spend the whole show talking about it. We know there is more to come. Heck.. we have two more Psychic Awakening books to get to right?! Needless to say we’re gonna be busy and have tons to talk about.

    Thank you and Enjoy!

Forge the Narrative is mostly a Warhammer 40k Podcast. Each episode is about an hour long. This ideally gives you something neat to listen to on your way to work, or on the way back home. Maybe you can even listen while you are painting or modeling!

Please follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!
FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. FORGE THE NARRATIVE (iTunes Page)
Alternatively you can subscribe via your own iTunes, and it should update our podcast when we post a new one.
