    FTN Episode 323 – Playing Behind the 8 Ball Mar 08, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Ricky and Adam join me this week to talk about playing at a disadvantage. If you aren’t a meta chaser sometimes you’ve got to just play the best tools in your shed. What happens when you roll up to the table against someone with a better trick? We don’t solve the problem but we sure do talk about it for a little while. We have two amazing Community Spotlight segments in this show too.

    Hi guys,

We start the show talking about playing at a disadvantage. You brought a trick – either shooting or assault and you get paired or choose to play someone with them same trick as you but they do it better! We chat a bit about how to realize and compensate for that. This is a topic we will dive deeper into over the next couple of episodes.

The first community spotlight shines a light on BattleHaven. If you haven’t check them out yet please do. You can find more information here. These guys put on a fabulous event celebrating the gaming culture and spirit of friendship. Great people doing great things – it is absolutely worth the trip.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

After that we jump back in with Adam and Ricky to stay on topic. Of course we can’t stay on topic without several blatant Lord of the Rings references because… why not?

The second Community Spotlight is with Pablo Martinez from Chapter Tactics over on the FLG network. We talk about gaming in general and what it’s like to interact at events and as an organizer.

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

We close out the show again with more random Lord of the Rings references but more on topic we tee up better discussions about playing down and doing what you ‘need to do’ instead of maybe what you set up to do when you built your army.

FTN Episode 322 – Defense Wins Championships Feb 29, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Adam and Red join Paul this week. We kick the show off taking about some Duke of Down Under success. We have a community spotlight section in the middle and then Professor Red talks to us about Operational Framework. We have some tips in here for new and old players. Let’s get to it!

    Hi all,

We recorded this episode before the big Marine changes so we don’t get into them in this show but you can bet your bottom dollar the meta is going to change. Sweeping changes to Doctrines and a few critical stratagems are going to break the top spots wide open. It might usher back in the Tau but a LOT has changed in the game since the last time that list was popular.

We can’t ignore the radical new abilities ushered in through the Psychic Awakenings and we’ll continue to see more.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

In the middle of the show Jay Larsen joins me to talk about Crisis Protocol and how that game is developing into it’s own. He hosts a podcast about it as well. If you’d like to know more about the game please check it out.

In the back of the show Red scratches the surface on Operational Framework. Trust me.. It’s not as boring as it sounds. He puts some theory around one of the critical aspects of winning Warhammer 40k games. Over the course of the discussion we talk about discipline and reserve that’s difficult for some players to muster.

FTN Episode 321 – The New ITC Tournament Missions and You Feb 22, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Archon Skari and Red Powell sit down with Paul to discuss the recent changes to the ITC Tournament Mission format. These guys are know for their success unconventional lists so it is great to hear their thoughts and get a little early insight to how they may attack the format. Strap in!

    Hi guys,

Huge changes have been made to the ITC Champions Mission format in a direct answer to some of the perceived problems in the tournament meta. We mention this in the show but the change seem to be focused on creating more interaction on the tabletop while also creating less ‘gotcha’ moments in the early game.

Seize the Initiative has been a divisive rule from the start but it is inherently a core rule of the time. These missions look to remove that. The largest group of players will likely not feel strongly enough to object to this – and I honestly don’t know anyone who is overly enthusiastic about this rule being in the game UNLESS it benefits them in an unfavorable deployment or match up.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

The missions alter the opening of the game to be a lot more predictable. A savvy general should be able to come up with a strategy to accommodate going first or second and the missions seem to further assist with this. The Missions

Personally – I don’t prefer to play defensively to the point of being somewhat careless with my deployment sometimes. I believe the changes to the missions in the form of early game set up and execution to the inclusion of additional Secondary Objectives may help me ‘get out of my own way’ more often.

    FTN Episode 320 – Greater Good – Tau Review Feb 17, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The Tau take the silver medal in the Psychic Awakening Greater Good book with awesome ways to be even more shooty in the shooting phase. The Tau are already a beast to deal with in tournaments and they’ve taken a bit of a backseat since the Marines took over. Will this be enough to push them back up?

    Hi all,

Remember to get those tickets for the BOLS Open.

Adam and Paul jump right into the Tau and their new customizable Sept abilities. There are some nice ones here maybe nothing ‘better’ than what is in their base book. Admittedly I am not a Tau player so there could really be some nuance that I’m missing here.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

The Experimental Weapon systems are the next thing we jump on and man.. a couple of these are real winners. It may be enough to bring rail cannons back to the game.

In the middle of the show Paul is joined by Stephen Box from Vanguard Tactics. I was fortunate enough to meet Stephen at the LVO. He’s got a great way of delivering competitive 40k information and if you aren’t already familiar with his work please check him out. We dish about Blood Angels.

FTN Episode 319 – The Greater Good is Great for Guard Feb 09, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

This episode is SUPER long. We have three community spotlights AND the Greater Good pre-release review. Whoa! Strap in for this three hour long show – I”m sorry in advance if you download this on you cell service – wait for free wifi if you can!

    Hi all,

Thomas Goatboy Reidy joins Paul and Adam this week to run down the Guard and Scion parts of the Greater Good up for pre-order this weekend. The first community spotlight is with Adam’s buddy Josh Diffey to speak about Down Under Pairings. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do. It is pretty amazing.

Interspersed between the Greater Good talk we do a segment with the Armageddon Series winner Daniel Smith. Check out this awesome export from Down Under Pairings that collated the series scoring just like we needed it it. The Final Scoring from Season 1 can be found here: Series Scoring.

Guard are big winners with this book. You are going to see a LOT of tank aces. They seem fun to play with and – dare we say – balanced. It gives some nice defense to the tanks or offense.. Basically whatever you want – there are rules for you. But is worth giving your warlord trait in order to get a second Ace? I am not sure.

Red Powell jump on the show this week to also tell us about his novel list he did so well with at the LVO and about his awesome group within the US Army. He and his team are doing a ton to bring awareness of what we do to that organization. They are doing this while always being good ambassadors for their game and their job. Wow. they are killing it.

Finishing movies is about about Adhesives. Paul Made SOOOOOO many mistakes this week that also includes hand wounds,,, and needing to start over on this project at lease once. With that said, please take this as a cautionary tale if you make it all the way to the end of the show. Us and the Beatles.. we have a long one every now and then. Thanks for listening!! Please leave us 5 star reviews.

    FTN Episode 318 – LVO 2020 Recap – Stats Centre Invasion Feb 01, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Please join us for a very special episode where Paul and Adam are joined by Peter the Falcon from 40k Stats.com. We run down our LVO 2020 coverage and talk about our experience as commentators for the largest Warhammer 40k Tournament in the world.

    Hi guys,

If you haven’t checked out 40kstats.com please do it now! Peter is putting out amazing content week after week and even if you are just ‘kinda into competitive 40k’ there is something there for you. Knowledge is power!

We talk about what an amazing experience it was doing live commentary for 30+ hours at the Las Vegas Open. We had some early struggles but once the stars aligned we were off to the races with what I think is the best coverage ever to come out of a 40k event. It truly was a team endeavor. You couldn’t see all the motion from the guys behind the scenes but it honestly made it all work. I’m honored to be a part of that team. Please check out the 40k Stats Centre Twitch channel to watch the entire coverage. It’s peppered with guest interviews right after climatic games, jokes, and all the drama that the event brings.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

In the middle of the episode we highlight the Dallas Open. Nate is a little gun shy being on the mic but the event is in its 3rd year and they are only picking up steam. It’s totally work checking out and these guys are dedicated to giving you a good time. Plus.. it’s right down the road from the Citadel.

We come back in hot with Adam and Peter for the third part of the show. Peter wouldn’t be Peter without giving us a belly full of stats that we get to gnash on. I am a filthy meta chaser and I know what I’m building more of right now… Eliminators. It’s a Marine world right now. How do you plan to attack it?

FTN Episode 317 – Ritual of the Damned Preview – Hot! Jan 18, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Adam, Ricky and Paul walk through the Ritual of the Damned supplement going up for pre-order this week. Man-o-man, this is exactly the book that some players have been waiting for. This book brings new rules to the Dark Angels, Grey Knights and the Thousand Sons. Let’s dive in!

    Hi all,

Another spectacular release from Games Workshop. This one breaths some much needed life into some flailing factions. If you’re a longtime Dark Angel player you are going to be exceptionally pleased. This book allows you to field some of the iconic namesake units of the DA with super buffs to the Ravenwing and Deathwing. The army will play very much like you may expect them to giving extra mobility or durability while still being ‘fun’ to move your figures around the table.

The Grey Knights got a ton of help. An extra layer of special rules have been added for them in the forms of Tides of the Warp. This is something the GK can manipulate in the psychic phase that gives them situational buffs. The high point cost of the GK mean you need all the help you can get with how killy the game is right now.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

Last but not least are the Thousand Sons. The 1kSons get 9 new army list options to choose from that each come with a Psychic Power, a Warlord Trait and a Relic. There are some spicy ones in there that we talk about during the show. There are several abilities that allow the shooty marines to ‘appear out of nowhere’ and deliver punishing fire.

It may not be enough to attract a lot of new players to the faction but you’re definitely going to be pleased with the collection you’ve acquired so far. Fans of the 1kSons will be pleased. It goes without saying that these books are a must have for players of these factions.

FTN Episode 316 – Sisters of Battle Codex Review – Sister Act 1 Jan 11, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Hi all, here is part one of our Adeptus Sororitas coverage. There is a LOT to digest in this book. Much of the codex is pointed pretty aggressively meaning you can get a lot of it on the table. Do the t3 frames pack enough punch to hold their own in the meta right now? That remains to be seen.

    Hi everyone.,

Ricky and Paul run down the basics from the Sisters of Battle codex up for pre-order right now. The dex has been out a few weeks with the limited edition box set that dropped recently. This week the masses can get their hands on this holy book along with a host of new models.

The Battle Sister starts at 9 points and honestly, for value I think this is the only kinda maybe in the whole book. Everything else comes in with modest point values, including tanks like the Exorcist. I don’t mean that things are ‘too cheap.’ I think the point values reflect the low toughness values and die role dependencies from the army. I’m saying this untested. I have not faced or played the new Sisters yet so I really want to know what you guys thing.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

New models IN PLASTIC is what a ton of people have been waiting on and they have certainly does these models justice. Each model brings dynamic poses with tons of interesting features.

My favorite so far is the Exorcist. I like this even better than the Trial of St Katherine. It looks tough and has rules to match. Rocking three of these things in year’s past was something people did and you should expect to see it again.

    FTN Episode 315 – 2020 Off Like a Rocket – Road to the LVO Jan 04, 2020
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Kicking off 2020 with Ricky breaking his silence and Val from 40k Stats Centre. We ramble on a bit and then give our predictions on what will win the LVO. Spoiler Alert: it’s probably going to be Marines. Are we wrong? Are Eldar and Tau real contenders?

    Hi all,

Our buddy Val Heffelfinger joins us this week and serves Paul an indecent proposal – one that he can’t refuse… We start our Road to the LVO coverage with a few predictions both safe and speculative.

Last week it was fun to think about models from the last decade but now we turn our attention to the future and speculate about what we’ll see from GW over the next few weeks.

Please please please check out the new Forge The Narrative objective markers. These things look awesome. Ordering a set is a good way to support one of our sponsors AND the show. Find them here.

We have high hopes for the remaining Psychic Awakening books. Why shouldn’t we? The one’s we’ve seen so far have been real winners. It will be fun to see what happens with the Grey Knights and Thousand Sons particularly. The Dark Angels have always been sort of on the fringe. Ricky is cautiously hopeful about what a book may hold for them but pines away for the Death Wing and the ever shrinking presence of the Terminator.

We think Marines will dominate the top 8 of the largest tournament in the world. What do you think?

FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. FORGE THE NARRATIVE (iTunes Page)
Alternatively you can subscribe via your own iTunes, and it should update our podcast when we post a new one.

    What are your picks?

The second part of the show we talk a bit about list design and then mission design. The mission design section is rooted in ‘how to build up the scene in your area.’

This is an extra long show and we didn’t have time for a hobby segment. It will be back next week!
