Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley

Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process invites you into the minds of writers and other creatives as they open up about their process, their doubts, and what kinds of changes they’re thinking about making. The questions are mildly invasive, honestly, and the answers are unvarnished…and so refreshing!
Whether your creative work is writing, painting, making music, parenting, or simply living, Finding the Throughline can help you get—and stay—inspired. Invigorated, even.
For detailed show notes on each interview, visit katehanley.substack.com. And if you’d like to hear these interviews in one ad-free episode (as opposed to broken up into three shorter episodes with a few ads sprinkled in to keep the lights on), become a paid subscriber once you’re there.

    [Boundaries, People]: What’s on Your “I Don’t” List?, Ep. 937 Jun 02, 2023
    Show notes

Knowing what’s on your “don’t list” will help shore up your boundaries, and that helps you walk a little taller and keeps any bad behavior from taking away from your well-being.

[Boundaries, People!]: How Boundaries Create Freedom, Ep. 936 May 31, 2023
    Show notes

Drawing boundaries might feel limiting, but corralling your energy is, paradoxically, SUPER freeing. Then you don’t have to expend time or energy wrapped up in drama that isn’t yours, or deciding when you should get involved, or figuring out how to scale back.

[Boundaries, People!]: Which of the 2 Types of Boundaries Do You Need Most?, Ep. 935 May 29, 2023
    Show notes

[I’m replaying some of my best stuff while I take the summer off to decompress. This week’s episodes on boundaries are something we all need reminders of because unfortunately, boundaries are not ‘set it and forget it’!]

There are two types of boundaries, and we tend to only think about one of them, which means you could be neglecting an important way of keeping yourself in a good place. Which one are you better at? And which type would serve you best at this moment?

[Bottom 3 Episodes Ever]: Be Coachable, Ep. 934 May 26, 2023
    Show notes

Here it is–my third-least listened to episode ever.

It’s about how to stay open to constructive feedback, and why you want to. I mean, this is a true strength–but perhaps not something that’s typically top of mind for most of us (hence, it’s position way down at the bottom of the downloads).

[Bottom 3 Episodes Ever]: Why You Should Ditch the GPS Once in a While, Ep. 933 May 24, 2023
    Show notes

This week I’m replaying the three episodes that have gotten the fewest listens since they first launched. These are some really early episodes, and frankly, they’re kinda preachy! I think I had some stuff to get off my chest!

Here’s the original episode description: “Surely there are some places in this world where you don’t need an omnipotent GPS voice to get you there. I mean, what happens when the grid goes down and we’ve all lost the ability to navigate by ourselves? What then?”

[Bottom 3 Episodes Ever]: Can You Eat Lunch Without Doing This? , Ep. 932 May 22, 2023
    Show notes

As I was browsing for old episodes to re-play while I take a hiatus for the rest of the summer, I figured it was only fair that I play the least popular episodes, and not just the big winners. So this week I’m replaying the three episodes that have gotten the fewest listens since they first launched. Do they deserve their spot at the bottom of the list? Give ‘em a listen and decide for yourself!

Here’s the original episode info: “Today I am encouraging you—imploring you, even!--to take an honest-to-gosh lunch break. And by that I mean, move away from your computer, and keep your hands and your eyes off your phone. Why?”

[Top 3 Episodes Ever]: What Got You in Trouble in School Could Now Save Democracy, Ep. 931 May 19, 2023
    Show notes

This week during the great hiatus of 2023 (for this podcast, anyway, although if there’s something you can take a break from, I support you!), I’m replaying the three episodes with the most listens. Today’s is about something that may seem trivial that actually has the potential to have a very big impact on your community at large. And that is to have more conversations with the people you know about the laws, policies, bodies, and people that govern where you live.

Yep, chatting with friends is something that might have gotten you labeled a 'bad student' when you were in school, but now it's something that helps you be a good citizen.

[Top 3 Episodes Ever]:CAN You Give from an Empty Cup??, Ep. 930 May 17, 2023
    Show notes

This week during the great hiatus of 2023 (for this podcast, anyway, although if there’s something you can take a break from, I support you!), I’m replaying the three episodes with the most listens. Today’s is a very close second in terms of overall listens to the Stop Being Nice episode I re-ran on Monday.

You've heard the advice to put on your own oxygen mask first, and that you can't give from an empty cup (I've said this myself many times, including on this podcast). But I've been re-thinking this. Because, first of all, you don't have to have your shit together in order to help someone else. And second, being of service raises your own energy. So how do you balance self-care with helping others? It's kind of like making a smoothie.

[Top 3 Episodes Ever]: Why You Should Stop Being Nice, Ep. 929 May 15, 2023
    Show notes

This week during the great hiatus of 2023 (for this podcast, anyway, although if there’s something you can take a break from, I support you!), I’m replaying the three episodes with the most listens. Today’s is from the last week of 2021, when my friend Terri Trespicio, author of the book Unfollow Your Passion, was my co-host for the week and shared several anti-resolutions for the year ahead.

This was far and away the most popular anti-resolution–and was, in fact, the most popular episode I’ve ever released.

    It is: Stop Being Nice.

Despite the fact that women have been socialized to be nice above all else, it's not actually a very noble goal. Does that mean you should go out and let your a-hole flag fly? Or become outright mean? Goodness, no. It just means you set your sights on something different--something that takes a lot less energy than being nice AND that gives you more energy, because it's gratifying.

[Money Mantras]: Pay Yourself First, Ep. 928 May 12, 2023
    Show notes

Although the bills take up a big part of our financial thinking, your highest money priority is NOT to make sure that your bills are paid. It’s to make sure that YOU are paid–so that you have money for more than just your bills. You have it for goals, your dreams, and your freedom. And how you do that is today’s money mantra.
