A really enjoyable and uplifting episode with the radiant Funmbi, who is pretty much universally regarded as an all round nice guy - and this episode should only serve as evidence of this! However, as we hear, the nice guy image can be tough to break out of, especially in the world of standup. He and Brett get deep into this of course, but you can expect some full on entertaining film chatter as well as comedy nuggets and gems, including Funmbi’s beginnings in comedy and developing his comedic chops for all kinds of rooms and environments, living in Nigeria at an early age and being involved in film clubs which, at that time, was all about VHS tapes, how one must commit to one’s VHS renting choice whereas in streaming you can jump around, attending drama school in Canada, not being into horror and opting more for the superhero side of things, relatable bad guys and SO MUCH MORE! It’s proper jam packed, and Funmbi’s led a crazy interesting life so you’ll definitely get down with this one, ladies and gentlemen. The nice guy of comedy, Funmbi Omotayo!

Lots of good times to be had with Brett and John, which is all right here for your listening enjoyment! John is well into his films, so much so he has a long list of Kermode’s recommendations at hand (a wise move - maybe throw some suggestions at him yourself why not!) and has a fine history of film watching as you will hear. So as the two approach a good amount of conversational bits and pieces including the locked grooves of being a film critic, the many problems of HD and the effect it has on the feel of a film, to him being a very solutions oriented fellow, to all kinds of tangents besides, you’ll have a great old time in the company of John Robins - enjoy! Oh, and when you hear a sound almost like an old phonograph record or a roasting chicken, it’s just John vaping. We didn’t add extra foley effects. Although that would be kinda fun…?

And who better to talk about such subjects as an actor on a show about the afterlife! From her humble beginnings back in the days working in a video shop (complete with a well stocked ice-cream fridge), to presenting a music show on Channel 4 to then getting into comedy, and now full on acting in ‘The Good Place’ and more, she’s also become a very powerful voice in the world of activism with her amazing positive campaigning against the weird world of celebrity diets, fat-shaming and many other vile elements in mass media. Basically Jameela is a superhero living among us. So let us celebrate her, as we hear about her show The Good Place and being on the cusp of series 4, Ted Danson, the costs of activism and balancing the benefits, how it seems the world has been listening to her since she lost weight, karma, the afterlife, ET-based grief therapy and what Macaulay Culkin has to answer for in her fear of bees (and what scrapes said fear has gotten her into). As ever, the sit down convo enjoys many a tangent, ranging from some ‘inside baseball’ details, Brett’s casting in a Bill creation pilot a while back, the character board and the dynamics of a cast, his additional work as puncher up of scripts, the deep connection between him and his father, the old chestnut of separating art from the artist and whether we can do that these days (often, no), the two sources of comedy, the duality of his parents backgrounds, the occasionally manipulative nature of Scrubs and a whole lot more. As easy one, if you have a Netflix subscription - yes that one job was to watch Russian Doll, so hopefully that was an achievable task and was taken care of! If so, you will have of course become a fast fan, and you will thoroughly enjoy Brett and Leslye going right into it - a proper treasure trove of trivia for you, going into the logistics, casting, music (yes THAT song), the whole deal. It’s fascinating even if you haven’t seen it though - you’ll get a kick out of it for sure! On top of that, the two go in on how Leslye is open to her creations being interpreted however they may (unless it’s wrong), her dreams of directing a Bond movie, toxic femininity, being put in her feelings by one film in particular, how she loves musicals (apart from one - you’ll hear), how key moments in her life seemed to be centred around film, sexy vs sexist, her early films and her family’s new year’s film traditions!
