    Existennial

Existennial is a short show that muses on meaning for the millennial stuck in an existential crisis otherwise known as a Tuesday. šŸ™ƒ With warmth & wit, we’ll investigate intentional living through a smorgasbord of science, spirituality, psychology, philosophy, pop culture, shower thoughts, and eavesdroppings. Talia Pollock is a writer, armchair philosopher & storyteller. Formerly the host & author of “Party in Your Plants,” which put levity into eating well—her focus is now abolishing phony-baloney living to make depresh less by valuing our values more.

    [party in my plants] 39: I’m a Proud Quitter! Here’s Why. (And Here’s How.) Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

Since I’ve been old enough to make my own decisions I’ve quit a whole bunch of things. And some big stuff, too. I mean, a sport that I’d played religiously for over 10 years, jobs, friends, fears, BEER!! But I’m a proud quitter. A strategic quitter. A HEALTHY quitter, in my opinion. And since wrapping the word ā€œQUITTINGā€ in a positive-connotation bow is a rarity, I figured I’d chat with you about MY art and science to strategic, positive quitting so maybe you can feel less lousy about finally giving up that thing you wanna give up, or carry less guilt about quitting so and so way back when (or yesterday). [party in my plants] 38: How to Build a Nut Butter Empire with Erika Welsh of Wild Friends Foods Jun 01, 2017
    Show notes

Take a stroll through your grocery store’s nut butter section. There’s a very good chance some bright colored jars with a big squirrel and the words ā€œWild Friendsā€ on the label will catch your eye, draw you in and make you smile. It’s true! And how it’s actually possible for nut and seed butter to make us smile? And also taste insanely good? Well that’s what I wanted to investigate. So I got to sit down with the co-founder of Wild Friends Foods, Erika Welsh, and talk about how her peanut, almond, cashew and sunflower butters are changing the bread spread game as we know it. Turns out, there’s not some manipulative mastermind marketing strategy behind Wild Friends, instead, there’s a BUTT ton of passion. Get ready to hear: How one rainy afternoon in college serendipitously birthed an empire of nut and seed butters. The #1 Wild Friends butter that most changes peoples’ lives. The story of Erika and Keeley’s humble hustle from college to the grocery store to Shark Tank to the Forbes 30 under 30 list. What happened when they were faced with the decision to quit college or pursue their passions. The most interesting ways Wild Friends fans eat their nut and seed butters! [party in my plants] 37: Healthy Hedonism, Hashimoto’s and Haha’s with Phoebe Lapine May 25, 2017
    Show notes

You know how adopting all the healthy habits that we’re told to adopt can be incredibly overwhelming, stressful, confusing & social-life destroying? Well, today’s guest totally knows that. Or knew that. Which is why she completely ignored her doctor when they diagnosed her with an autoimmune disease in her early twenties. Flash forward to not so long ago, and Phoebe Lapine’s body and skin weren’t going to let her ignore her diagnosis any longer. She needed to do healthy stuff, STAT. But instead of just uphauling her entire life in one fell swoop, Phoebe, who was already a cookbook author, chef, culinary instructor, speaker, and blogger at FeedMePhoebe.com, decided to take a full year implementing one healthy habit at a time, so she could see which ones were really worth the hype...and the sacrifice. Thankfully, Phoebe didn’t keep her health experiment all to herself: she chronicled it in her new terrific book called The Wellness Project AND lucky for us, she deep dives into her wellness odyssey in this podcast episode! You’ll hear: The truthful last straw that pushed Phoebe to actually take her health seriously. The #1 habit out of all 12 habits she experimented with that’s her MVP. The FRIENDS episode in which this Phoebe’s life story literally gets portrayed by Phoebe Buffay! The smartest hack for cutting back on alcohol that I’ve ever heard. How to be a healthy hedonist (and wtf that actually means). A really easy daily habit for loving your gut. And so so so much more! [party in my plants] 36: to be a Happy Yogi is to be a BAD YOGI! with Erin Motz May 18, 2017
    Show notes

Today’s guest is a new kind of badass, she’s a BAD YOGI, with a nice ass probably because she does lots of yoga. Erin Motz of Badyogiofficial.com just reeks authenticity the same way that your sweaty yoga pants, well, just reek. The thing is, Erin’s loud and proud about not being a traditional yogi -- and she works long and hard to create a community where non-Sanskrit speaking, wine-loving, raggedy yoga-pants wearing yogis can UNITE! To date, with her brand, Bad Yogi, Erin has helped over 100,000 down-doggers proudly celebrate the fact that they’re bad yogis and she is essentially, redefining yoga culture. Kinda like how AirBnb redefined travel lodging. Except those are two completely different things so nevermind. Get ready to hear: The benefits of being a bad yogi. How to stop feeling so competitive in yoga classes! The honest correlation between yoga and weight. The answer to the question: is yoga supposed to be hard? The actual end goal of yoga. [party in my plants] 35: How to Actually Grocery Shop with Maria Marlowe May 11, 2017
    Show notes

If you’ve ever gotten lost in the grocery store you’ll be happy you found this episode. Because my guest Maria Marlowe is a grocery store guru...if that’s a thing. I mean, she has a whole 260+ page book on how to buy real food at the grocery store, so I assume that makes her a grocery store guru! Last time Maria was on the show, she spoke about how our food affects our face, and stressed the importance of eating clean shiz to clean up your skin. Well that’s all well and good, except if you don’t know how to purchase clean shiz to eat, you and your skin and your gut and your SELF are shiz out of luck. But no more do you have to feel like a foreign tourist in the grocery store or get home and try to spiralize a cucumber that you bought instead of a zucchini, because Maria dropped some knowledge bombs on how to be the bomb dot com at grocery shopping! You’ll hear: What inspired Maria to write a guide to the grocery store. The biggest areas of confusion people experience in the grocery store. What term you should look for when buying fish. How to make healthy eating cheap! Maria’s earth-shattering advice for storing avocados longer. And loads more! Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! [party in my plants] 34: Neal Harden, Chef of ABCV, on creating epic plant food May 04, 2017
    Show notes

Neal Harden knows his way around plants. He knows how to dice ā€˜em, slice ā€˜em, present ā€˜em and combine ā€˜em in ways that makes them taste better than they’ve probably ever tasted before. Neal, the chef de cuisine of ABCV, a plant-based mecca and the third installment of the Jean George run ABC restaurants, is nothing short of a plant-whisperer. From breakfast to dinner he’s non-stop pumping out some of the most innovative and palate-pleasing ways to eat plants. It really takes some sort of plant guru to serve a simple plate of sauerkraut to rave reviews and accolades such as ā€œgroundbreaking.ā€ JUST SAUERKRAUT. That you eat with a fork. In our chat, which he kindly recorded at ABCV during some down time, if such a thing exists in a booked out for months restaurant, Neal humbly gives us a backstage view of what it’s like to run and execute a world-class plant-based restaurant. Although he isn’t able to give us all reservations...even to breakfast. You’ll Hear: The top-chef-like cooking audition Neal had with Jean George. What it’s like cooking for celebs, food critics and top chefs! How, for Neal, good food = caring. The difference between cooking in a restaurant and cooking at home. The surprising (to Neal) top selling dish at ABCV. And so much more! Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! [party in my plants] 33: The Ultimate NYC Plant-Party Restaurant Guide! with Ilene Moreno Apr 30, 2017
    Show notes

Ilene Moreno of the thecolorfulkitchen.com is my best foodie friend. Between the two of us, I’d say we’ve covered 96% of the plant-party restaurants in New York City and together, we’ve been to probably 40%. We actually met because of our plant-party restaurant going! So we figured why not sit down and take you on a tour of our favorite New York City plant-party restaurants, as well as share our top tips for eating healthfully at non-plant party restaurants. As a bonus for this bonus episode, I made you my Ultimate Plant-Party Restaurant NYC Guide, which I’m now considering required reading if you live near NYC or are planning a trip here someday soon. [party in my plants] 32: No More BS in BS (Beautiful Skin) with Adina Grigore of SWBasics Apr 27, 2017
    Show notes

Adina Grigore is the found of SWBasics - a no-BS, truly natural skincare line that’s radically changing skin care for the way better. Adina is one of the coolest peeps I’ve ever spoken to which will be obvious as you listen, but aside from being cool and funny and authentic AF, Adina is a freaking skin genius … and a rebel! Her first book, Skin Cleanse, turned the world on its head when it revealed the truth: that to get clear, happy skin, the more simple, the more better. (And the more plants the more better, too.) Her second book which recently came out, Just the Essentials, proves how plants oils are skin heros and teaches exactly how to use them to make your skin glow like woah. I’d say get a pen and paper out to take notes because there’s such great info in this episode, but I already did that for you on partyinmyplants.com/32! You’re welcome! And thanks for listening! Get pumped to hear: My own shameful DIY hair product experience :-(. The #1 cause of bad skin, according to Adina. The top foods for great skin, also according to Adina. How to make food journaling not totally suck. Adina’s refreshing thoughts on my biggest insecurity: CELLULITE. Why Adina calls essential oils ā€œplant-based powerhousesā€ and how she came to love ā€˜em! Her top 10 beginner essential oils. And SO MUCH MORE! Which is the blog name she’s been running for over 10 years and has used to inspire and change lives of hundreds of thousands of people all over the world? Yep! I thought we’d just be talking about plants, the subjects in Sarah’s drool-worthy photos, but this conversation led us to a truly holistic chat about health from the ground to the plate to the mouth to the mind! Show notes

My awesome guest today, Erin Willett, is an alumnus and semi-finalist of both The Voice AND The Biggest Loser, making her one of the coolest and most courageous females around - with kickass vocals AND kickass boxing skills to boot. Despite losing 87 pounds in one of the weirdest environments (The Biggest Loser ranch) Erin has an incredibly grounded, inspiring approach to weight loss and overall health. Get pumped to hear: The #1 factor Erin credits for her massive transformation. Her perspective on how words carry weight! And which words are yay and which are nay. The greatest thing she took back from The Biggest Loser ranch that changed everything for her. Her totally chill view on exercise today. A really yummy way to eat cauliflower!
