    EQ Gangster

EQ Gangster is specifically for leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs & other influencers who are honest enough to admit that they just might be the ones holding themselves back & who are brave enough to change that. Research is showing that your Emotional Quotient (also known as Emotional Intelligence) is a bigger indicator of success than your IQ, your education & your experience.

In each episode, Noble offers practical, candid, and often humorous clarity for the modern leader who is brave enough to do the most uncomfortable work they’ll ever do: change THEMSELF! Interviews with other leaders help you see how EQ can transform the way you lead, do business and live your life.

Noble Gibbens, West Point grad and Army veteran, has been coaching people for over 20 years. After an uncharacteristic fight with his wife a few years ago, he started learning about & growing his own Emotional Intelligence (EQ). What he learned transformed him from the inside out – in every area. He’s sharing the breakthroughs here on the EQ Gangster podcast, in his membership, EQ Mafia, and with his corporate clients.

    Show notes

    Thought Analyzer

A tool to think about what you're thinking about.

    Think, feel, do.

There's always a process that happens before we arrive at an action.

Many of us are just not aware of what that process is.

If you understand that process, you can deconstruct it.

    Book recommendation:

Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess, Dr. Caroline Leaf

Case study: It's actually unhealthy to be self-aware with no self-management tools.

    Facts: objective vs subjective.

    Facts don't include anything subjective.

    Life:

    What happened?

What do you think about what happened?

2 different people can react 2 different ways to the same thing

    Unintentional thoughts & their impact

Lead to feelings which then lead to actions.

Toxic positivity is like gaslighting yourself.

Our thoughts can feel like truth sometimes & often our thoughts are inaccurate.

How would an emotionally healthy person respond to this situation or think about this situation?

We can choose to think a new thought, which changes the way you feel, the way you act and, therefore, the result you get.

Anger is typically a secondary emotion.

#135: I'm Feeling Terrible Today & I'm Ok With It Part II May 10, 2021
    Show notes

What is the difference between stewing and giving yourself permission to feel unpleasant emotions?

Treat them as guests to your house.

    Be curious about them.

Suspend judgment and evaluate stories and inaccurate beliefs.

What can you learn about those "guests" at your house?

Do you know them all by name?

You don't have to let them spend the night or move into your house.

And at a minimum, identify who they are, which emotions they are and when you have time let them into your proverbial house and have them stay for coffee. Have a conversation with them. Ask them questions. But again, suspend judgment.

That is the difference between handling your emotions productively and from a healthy perspective versus stewing on them, not identifying them and not letting them in your house and having a discussion with them and be curious about them.

#130: Emotions Are Exhausting & the Mood Meter App to Increase Self-Awareness Apr 22, 2021
    Show notes

God told us to sell the house…and that was it.

This episode is very closely related to the last episode.

I get sooo emotionally attached to every single property we visit…CO, MT, ID, SD…

    I've gotten frustrated at that.

    It's exhausting to feel & experience emotions…

If you're new to your emotional growth journey, give yourself plenty of grace, space & patience as you begin to allow yourself to feel emotions that you may not have been aware of your entire life…like me.

Mood Meter app…very helpful in increasing my self-awareness

    Check in w/yourself.

Attach to a habit you already have.

    What are you feeling?

Notes section: why you're feeling that way.

STILL NOT very easy for me to identify what I'm feeling.

The more I'm thinking about this stuff & the more I'm putting my thoughts / feelings / emotions down, the more comfortable & familiar I'm becoming w/them.

Also forces me to stop, pause, & check-in w/myself. I would normally "push through" any bubbling or percolating emotions by defaulting to DOING as a COPING MECHANISM so that I wouldn't have to feel my emotions & feelings.

The more I do it & the more consistent I become, the more different emotions are popping up rather than just one.

    Mood Meter App:

I start by asking myself the 4 main quadrants:

    Am I:

    High energy, unpleasant

    Low energy, unpleasant

    High energy, pleasant

    Low energy, pleasant

Then, I'll click on each "tile" in each quadrant which contains 25 different emotions in each of those above 4 categories.

The Mood Meter app has helped me process my emotions through this journey…

I encourage you utilize the Mood Meter app to help increase your self-awareness AND, like me, possibly even help you identify & deal w/some of the emotions that could be affecting you that you're currently unaware of.

How is a lack of trust impacting your relationships?

It has seemed to stunt the growth of any relationship where I don't trust.

Have you been burned before in relationships?

What vows, commitments or promises have you made consciously or subconsciously as a result of having your trust violated in relationships?

    "I'll never trust anyone again."

"Trust must not be important so I don't have to be trustworthy in relationships."

Episode 128: 4 Massive Insights & Practical Application to Grow Your Resilience Apr 15, 2021
    Show notes

The ups & downs of being a leader and entrepreneur. Growing your emotional capacity. Resilience—the ability to handle adversity, failure, change & pressure in a positive way. -John C. Maxwell Stress & anxiety affects us physically, mentally & emotionally. The Resilient Entrepreneur handbook: eqforentrepreneurs.com/tre How resilient are you? Unaddressed emotional issues don't get better over time. Be proactive at dealing w/your emotions. Your emotions will get "louder" over time even if you attempt to stuff, avoid or block them. 1 - Recognize your emotions. 2 - Acknowledge your feelings. 3 - Allow yourself to feel those feelings. Honor yourself by allowing yourself to feel those emotions. Feeling grief for all the changes that are happening in our country, in your life, at work, in your family, etc. Any change is also a loss of something. Emotions have to have some place to go. 4 - Recognize you do have control. 1: Trust: You can know what you need. 2: Trust: You can get your power back by knowing what you need. I can do what's needed. I don't have to wait for anything. 3: Trust: That it's ok for me to do the things that are needed. It's good for me to do the things I need to do. 1 - Set boundaries. You can walk away. You can even quit. 2 - It's ok to rest when you need to rest. 3 - Make a change. Only you can know what change you need. 4 - You can stand up for yourself. EQi Assessment: eqforentrepreneurs.com/training 5 - Create safety for yourself. How can you create safety for yourself? Physical, mental, spiritual, emotional safety Another way to get your power back: Ask yourself: "Then what?" Realize you can handle all the "Then what's". When you realize that, you begin to get your power back. Train yourself to leave possibility that a better future might be out there that you're not thinking of. Story about the father & son: "Maybe it's a blessing. Maybe it's not." When you change your thought, you change your feelings & you can begin to lower your stress levels. Resilience Homework: 1.) Write down 1 area you need to grow in your resilience. 2.) Write down the main emotion you need to acknowledge or honor. 3.) What is 1 thing you can do to get back your control.

#127: 3 Consequences for Unaddressed Emotional Issues Apr 12, 2021
    Show notes

1.) You have no boundaries, so you cross others boundaries and are typically completely unaware that you're doing it (ask me how I know) AND you allow yourself to be mistreated and/or walked on or over b/c you have no boundaries for yourself either.

2.) You don't know where you begin & end and where someone else begins and ends so you can get into codependent & very emotionally needy relationships that end up being very unhealthy.

3.) Unaddressed emotional issues don't get better over time, they actually compound. Everyone pays a price for your emotional unhealthiness.
