    045. Your Blue Flame: Drop the Guilt and Do What Makes You Come Alive with Jen Fulwiler Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

“The mess and the chaos is always going to be there and the trick isn’t to wait for that moment when that’s not there so that you can finally be satisfied, but to be satisfied even when you hear the cat throw up in the other room, you still smile and you still say ‘yes, this is where I’m meant to be.’ I really think that’s the root of purpose and satisfaction.”

Jennifer Fulwiler is with us today to discuss her new book Your Blue Flame: Drop the Guilt and Do What Makes You Come Alive.

Jen is incredible. Her book is incredible. Our conversation lit me up…we talked all things blue flame, what it’s like to be a stand-up comedian, our quests for satisfaction & purpose as moms & women, how we “do it all,” shame, humility, how our strengths and weaknesses are one and the same, and the part that interested me most, Jen’s ideas about the ideal “tempo of life.”

Tune in to hear more and be inspired by the vibrant Jen Fulwiler!

    Jen’s Bio:

Jennifer Fulwiler is a standup comic, and former host of a daily talk show on SiriusXM, and mom of six kids. She’s here to talk about her new book Your Blue Flame(which I devoured in two days)…she is also the author of the bestselling memoirs Something Other than God (which I want to read next) and One Beautiful Dream. After being told that there wasn’t an audience for standup comedy done by a minivan-driving woman from the suburbs, she self-produced her own tour, which is selling out venues across the country.

    043. The 6 Needs of Every Child: Empowering Parents & Children through the Science of Connection with Amy Olrick & Jeffrey Olrick, PhD. Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

Kids don’t come with an instruction manual, right!? It’s true…but Jeffrey and Amy Olrick’s book The 6 Needs of Every Child is at the top of my list—it is the BEST parenting book on the market!

I’m not kidding. Even with three kids and three degrees + years of babysitting and nannying for other people’s kids, I still learned so, so, so much from reading their book. It was also the perfect middle ground for my husband and I to talk about parenting as individuals and together as a couple. It gave us the words to describe development and challenges.

Jeffrey and Amy are so charming: they’re a husband and wife duo who co-authored this incredible resource for parents. They offer us a mash up of neuroscience we can understand, their years of parenting experience, stories, humor, and decades of Jeff’s psychological research. They are here to give parents so much peace by helping readers (& listeners) transform our understanding of parenting—they offer us a much needed reframe: to see parenting not so much as a “job” but as a relationship.

They help us move out of those tough parenting moments with a little more grace by encouraging us to move beyond the hang up of “what do I do?” and into the mindset of “how shall I be with this person?”

Their perspective is refreshing, honest, and practical. It’s just the compassionate, easy to understand parenting book we need these modern times.

    Bios:

Jeffrey Olrick, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who
has worked with children and families for over twenty years. Amy Olrick is an author and human rights advocate whose work and writing have been featured in the Guardian and USA Today. Together, the Olricks run www.GrowingConnected.com, offering scientifically grounded and faith-informed resources for parents. They provide a much needed consilience for parents that we can all understand.

And because I know some of you are here for the list of The 6 Needs of Every Child:

    1. Delight

    2. Support

    3. Boundaries

    4. Protection

    5. Comfort

    6. Equipping

Definitely check out the book for all the Olrick’s amazing details about what each of these needs mean and how we can gracefully meet them as parents!

    042. Small Changes, Big Reasons: How Reducing My Toxic Burden Improved My Health, Saved Me Money, & Cleared Up My Skin Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now if you’ve been listening to Elevating Motherhood for a while or follow me on Instagram that most of the personal use product brands I talk about fall into the “clean” category. They’re non-toxic, mostly plant based, or sustainable. Some are organic. Some companies are b-corps. But mostly, the companies and products that I talk about and use fall into the “clean” category.

Am I just being bougie with my choices? Or just trying to be trendy? Or use products that are “on brand?” No. (Those are common assumptions, by the way. I suppose I could be offended by those assumptions, but why? I honestly think people plug in those kinds of reasons because they don’t understand this new movement and our “whys” behind it. And I can’t help but notice that the current times are motivating people to reevaluate their priorities on a lot of levels—they’re prioritizing what health, wellness, and simplicity mean to them.

Which is why I wanted to do this quick show to take the mystery out of reducing toxic burden and offer ideas about how to get started if making a shift speaks to you. This journey for me looks like taking my health, my family’s health, and the planet’s health seriously. I definitely didn’t start doing it because it was convenient or “the norm.”

I don’t want you to feel like this is one of those “what you should be doing” episode. It’s meant to be informative—a resource for those who are curious about reducing toxic burden or exploring cleaner, healthier products because what you use on your body and put in your body matters. I’m going to keep it really simple by sharing my own examples and stories as well as products that I’ve settled on after a lot of years of searching and trial and error and been really happy with.

I’m also doing this episode because I get a lot of questions from moms about toxic burden. They want to know what it is, if it has anything to do with food or is it only relevant to things like cleaning products? Is it environmental? What classifies something as a “toxin?” Or another big one is why should we even try to reduce toxins in our lives when we don’t have control over most of the environments we’re in anyway?

These are all great questions! For me, reducing my family’s toxic burden isn’t a waste of time and while it’s true that I don’t have control over what we’re exposed to in most environments, I DO have control over what we use in our own home, what we put on our skin, and in our bodies. And that’s a big enough reason for me to make changes—even just lots of small changes—for myself and my family.

I don’t have all the answers, just ones I’ve answered for myself—and my opinion and experience is just that: mine. But I also know that hearing other mamas’ stories is really powerful and often just the catalyst we need to start our own personal journey.

I’m also doing this episode to raise awareness. We’re not taught or encouraged to look at labels or read ingredient lists. Companies want us to focus on the shiny advertising. But I have found so much peace in reading ingredients and knowing more about the products and brands I use, their sources, their standards, etc. It’s empowering to be able to analyze them for myself to determine what is safe by my own educated standards.

In this episode I talk about:

    What Toxic Burden Is

Why I Care About Toxic Burden

Products I've Settled On Over the Years

    Cleaning Products

    Skin Care

    Makeup

    Air Quality

    039. We've All Been Groomed: A Conversation with Author, Advocate, & CEO Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good May 13, 2020
    Show notes

“Release means reclaiming our minds, our lives, and our futures from the negative messages that held us back. Release allows us to name what was stolen and who we were before it was stolen and to start doing the work that has to be done to get it back.” – Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good, page 144 of Groomed

Overcoming messages that shaped our past and limit our future—that’s what Elizabeth Melendez Fisher Good’s new book Groomed is all about. And she’s not just talking about survivors of sex trafficking that she works with on a daily basis, but all of us. Even our children. She’s here to talk with us today about her book, her own life lessons, and how we can move closer to who we truly are by moving beyond messages that limit us.

Elizabeth is a powerhouse of a woman and I’m so honored to share her with you. In 2011, Elizabeth cofounded what is today the leading provider to domestic survivors of sex trafficking, Selah Freedom. This organization provides Prevention curriculum for over 10,000 K-12th grade children, life-saving safe housing and resources to survivors, and education on this issue to millions annually. It also trains and partners with law enforcement, the FBI and United States Attorney’s Office to bring freedom to survivors and has been deemed a model organization serving this population. With her direction, she has led the organization in a financial growth of over 200% annually. She has also launched The Selah Way Foundation, a global network of leading service providers with three initiatives: Prevention, Protection and Provision. The goal of these initiatives is to get ahead of this issue in hopes of eradicating it and become a model and training arm for the international community. Elizabeth is a passionate pioneer and inspirational thought leader in the movement to eradicate sex trafficking and expose the root of the issue, childhood sexual abuse. She has spearheaded an awakening and brought partners and resources together with proven solutions to save lives. She is also the author of Groomed (Harper Collins, 2020). Using her own story of abuse, family tragedy, and rebellion, Elizabeth Melendez Fisher guides readers toward an understanding that grooming is oftentimes subtle, but it's always life-altering. She offers readers a way to overcome their past, starting with all-important but rarely explored idea of a selah, or a time of rest and reflection, and exploring active ways to forgive and move forward to a new level of freedom. Elizabeth has been highlighted and described as, “Part healer, part businesswoman, all resolve—if Selah Freedom is bringing light into the darkness, as the slogan says, then she is the one behind the megawatt.” She is the recipient of the prestigious New York City Global Business Leader Award and Tampa Bay Business Woman of the Year Award. Elizabeth has her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and her Master's in Clinical Psychology.

In this episode we talk about how we are groomed:

    · For Appearance: “You exist only to make me look good.”

    · To Be Invisible: “Your existence doesn’t matter to me.”

    · To Endure: “You’re stronger than everyone else. You can handle it all.”

    · For Judgement: “You are unforgivable.”

    · For Financial Fear: “There’s not enough for you.”

    · To rely on our phones for everything.

We also dive into the power of discernment and how the beliefs we were groomed to take on can suffocate our true identity.

This is a VERY powerful episode. I hope you’ll tune in, listen, and grow along side us.

Ojai Energetics: Another great supporter of the show is Ojai Energetics. They are the creators of my favorite line of organic, water soluable CBD products. If you’re new to CBD or aren’t sure what it is or what it does, or why I’m talking about it on a show for moms, tune in to Episode 015 where Ojai Energetics CEO Will Kleidon answers all of those questions and so much more. He takes the mystery out of this often misunderstood product in a way that’s easy to understand. 036. You Are Enough: Empowered to Rise with Author, Filmmaker, & Transformation Coach David Trotter Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

Do you ever struggle with feeling like you’re “not enough?” Where does that feeling come from? How can we work through those negative thoughts? Who or what can support us on our very personal and individual journeys toward believing we are “enough?” What’s holding us back?

    So many questions.

Where and who do we get our inspiration from? Should women only listen to women? Mothers only listen to mothers? As women, can we get inspiration from a man? I think the answer is YES! And that’s exactly why David Trotter is here with me today to talk about how we can show up, find our own answers, believe in our “enough-ness,” and be empowered to rise.

    Who is David Trotter?

David Trotter is a Transformation Coach and Host of Inspiration Rising, a podcast dedicated to inspiring women (and the men who support them) to rise up in life, love, and leadership. Through his Launch Your Life coaching program, he helps women (and men) overcome difficult life transitions (divorce, empty nest, job dissatisfaction) and develop a workable plan to make lasting changes. He is also the author of "Empowered to Rise: The Secret to Embracing Your True Identity, Uncovering Your Super Powers, and Bringing Your Inspiration to the World." For over 25 years, he’s helped people get unstuck, clarify their goals, and take their lives to the next level through his leadership, speaking, writing, and filmmaking. David and his wife, Laura, have been married for over 25 years and live in California.

Today I asked David to share a bit about his new book – specifically more about the chapter called “I Am Enough.” Gosh, as moms, do you find yourself struggling with that concept? I know I do from time to time. But I also know that I can shift that feeling of “not enough-ness” and gain more confidence with time, intention, and practice.
