Episode 005. The Lie of Convenience

    SHOW NOTES

    www.elevatingmotherhood.com/episode5

Moms have a lot of things to work through…a lot of issues that come up…a lot of problems to solve in every season of motherhood.

And there is no one size fits all answer for any of these issues or problems.

But there is a problem with one of the common solutions and perspectives that are offered up by others…and that problem is “convenience.”

In fact, the notion of “convenience” is so common that moms have started to look through that lens of convenience FIRST when looking for help or offering advice. We’re suddenly spending our time searching for the most “convenient” answer over what’s most effective for us and our family.

Our society has sold us on the notion that our lives need to be convenient. Convenience is a shiny object, the thing we lust over in our busy, overwhelming days as moms. “Buy this product, do this thing and your life will be more convenient. We promise you convenience.”

But I’m finding this lens to be harmful.

An issue comes up in parenting…let’s say our kid won’t sleep through the night—and suddenly people are offering out “convenient” things to buy or do as solutions. Quick fixes like “Here…buy this blanket, buy this sleep course, buy this sound machine, buy melatonin, buy these “things” that will do the work for you.”

And while there are tools that can help us with sleep—and yes, some of them might be convenient—this mindset of convenience is having a huge negative effect on our mothering culture.

Because when those convenient things aren’t working, we’re left floundering and feeling like a failure. We’re not encouraged or motivated to dig deeper or look at the bigger picture.

These messages have trained our brains to think about our quality of life in terms of whether it’s convenient or inconvenient.

I mean, it sounds appealing, right? Who wouldn’t want a short cut now and then?

But “now and then” has turned into more and more often. We aren’t looking for short cuts or convenience every once in a while, we’re expecting it every moment of the day...

Episode 004. My Journey with Anxiety: Melissa’s Story

    www.elevatingmotherhood.com/episode4

Here at Elevating Motherhood, we’re not going to shy away from the taboo topic of anxiety, but rather talk about it openly, hear personal stories from mamas who are living with it, and find more connection by being real about it.

In the first episode in our My Journey with Anxiety Series, Melissa Dyckman bravely talks about her first experiences with anxiety and panic attacks that didn’t present until after she became a mother. Melissa walks us through her experience, shares what worked for her (& what didn’t), opens up about hormones, and offers loving insight into how others can be supportive.

I learned a lot from this interview and walked away feeling more informed, compassionate, and understood. My hope is that you will, too.

Thank you for your support and kindness toward Melissa. It’s challenging for mamas to open up and be honest about what anxiety presents as, looks like, and feels like. Every mama’s journey is different. I’m 100% sure that her vulnerability will help other mamas who are on their own anxiety journey feel heard and understood. I’m also confident that mamas who hear this and don’t identify with anxiety will benefit, too. Just the practice of listening with an open heart and hearing another mama’s story could give you insight on how to be compassionate and supportive when the topic does cross your path.

Melissa will be returning for a second interview on beauty. She’s a talented and successful bridal team expert here on Maui. Her tips and insights on beauty will be loving and beneficial, too. Why a second interview? Because anxiety does not define us.Mothers can live with anxiety and still be professionals. We can have anxiety and still be interested in other topics. We can search for solutions for our anxiety ...while we search for beauty tips. I want to highlight that we don’t have to be known for one thing in our lives—ever. I want to honor the whole woman in each of us. Mothers are dynamic. Melissa is dynamic. I’m dynamic. You, mama, are dynamic. I see you and want to honor every side of you, every interest. We are not defined by one role, one interest, or one diagnosis. We are whole women. The whole woman in me honors the whole woman in you.

    Episode 003. Balance + Motherhood

    SHOW NOTES

    www.elevatingmotherhoodcom/episode3

How do you find balance as a mom? How do you find a work/life balance? Is it even possible?

In this episode, I’ll be addressing the mysterious idea of “balance” in motherhood. What is it? And how the heck do you find it? Is it just an illusion? Let’s talk about.

Listen to the full episode for personal examples and insights. As promised, here is a re-cap of the main points and strategies that can get us closer to solving the mystery of “balance” in our life as a mom:

Recap Possible Solutions to “Finding Balance” in Motherhood:

    1. Letting go of the idea that we need to find balance at all. Just literally kicking this notion to the curb, seeing it as something that isn’t real, and just letting go. You could tell yourself that even if you did find it, everything is going to change and you’re just going to have to go after it again anyway. So if balance feels like a vicious cycle to you, maybe just let it go and move on without it.

    2. Thinking about balance differently. It’s like being an acrobat—give into the idea that while we’re spinning a lot of plates, there is no way that all the plates will spin perfectly at the same time. We can just give ourselves permission to move from plate to plate as it needs our attention + without guilt. I know I’ve found a lot of freedom in this notion and I hope it gives you a sense of freedom, too.

    3. Understanding that we aren’t born knowing how to do everything (including how to parent at every stage) and then honoring that. We can give ourselves permission to seek out information or insight in any area of our life when we feel “out of balance.” This can look like researching child development stages, time management tips, or whatever you need. Whenever you feel like you need a “new strategy,” just dive in and research that topic. (Even if it’s a strategy for “How to tackle laundry”). If it feels like what you’re doing at the moment isn’t working, it’s okay to research and find more information or a different perspective that could give you peace of mind. We can choose to see this research as “one more thing” on our long list of things to do and get exasperated…or we can see it as an investment. Time put in now to help us solve a problem. Once we have the information we need, we can use it now and in the future. Investing in yourself, investing in your children, and investing in your sanity is worth the time it takes to research.

    4. Asking for help. As women, as mothers, we don’t have to “do it all” or “be everything to everyone.” Let go of the notion that motherhood is a solo gig. Whether you’re parenting with a partner or solo, we are social beings meant to live in community. We don’t have to carry the entire load, nor should we try to. It’s time to start working on a new mindset as moms.

    5. Aligning your actions and values. Figure out what is important to you and your family and then do what aligns with those values. Not what “everyone else is doing” not “what the Joneses are doing” but what is working for YOU and YOUR family.

I hope this is helpful to you, mama! I appreciate you listening and diving into this topic with me. More info & links are available on the episode's webpage over at www.elevatingmotherhood.com

    Episode 002. Motherhood + Expectations

    SHOW NOTES

    www.elevatingmotherhood.com/episode2

“I think like any woman, I had visions of life as a mother as being what it was – both joyful and hard.”-Sonya Niess

Today’s guest is Sonya Niess, a professional doula and mother of two. Sonya opens up about her own journey with expectations and motherhood, sharing the story of her daughter Naia’s diagnosis with Migration Partial Seizures of Infancy. Sonya lovingly walks us through what processing this diagnosis looked like for her and her family.

She also offers a compassionate perspective for mamas. The grace she shares and offers is inspiring. This is a powerful episode for both mamas and mamas-to-be. Many of us enter into motherhood with expectations—both personal and societal—whether we acknowledge them or not. Hearing Sonya’s story led me to look at my own expectations, what they are, how they’ve changed, and how to move through them with more grace.
