Episode 132: Bluebeard, Tom Battista Sep 25, 2019
    Show notes

From Margaritaville to Bluebeard and Amelia’s, Tom Battista has mastered being successful at just about anything he sets his mind to. Tom grew up in Indianapolis as the middle child of seven and grew up to protest in DC against the Vietnam war while attending Indiana University. Just before moving into the cabin full-time, Tom was asked to help with a rock festival at Bush Stadium. He learned how to be a great stage manager and followed the crew to tour with artists including David Bowie, Parliament Funkadelic and currently, Jimmy Buffet. Between tours, Tom would always come back to Indy and invest in the city. Today, he still tours with Jimmy Buffett and owns buildings and businesses on Mass Ave and Fountain Square. And, most recently, the Kan Kan. Break off a piece of an Amelia’s baguette as you learn about placemaking, what it’s like to drive Jimmy Buffet’s plane, and how Indy has grown in the last 20 years from one of the city’s best. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Tom Battista.

Episode 129: Union Western Clothing, Jerry Lee Atwood Sep 04, 2019
    Show notes

From learning how to "paint with thread" while working in a coffee shop to dressing Post Malone, Lil Nas X, and The Highwomen, Indiana's Jerry Lee Atwood is now the lead tailor, embroiderer and rhinestone wrangler of Union Western Clothing. Jerry Lee Atwood (a name you can only say in its fullest) and his partner Joe David Walters create custom western wear garments as Union Western Clothing. Jerry Lee Atwood's childhood in Indiana played to the soundtrack of his father's thousands of country records. While he was working at a coffee shop and learning how to "paint with thread" in his twenties, a customer gifted him a book on the history of western wear. Already interested in that genre of fashion, the book influenced him to lasso his future by refining his sewing and embroidering skills at a drapery shop and the Indiana Repertory Theatre. Jerry Lee Atwood completed only his first custom commissioned fully-embroidered suit eight years ago, and now you can find his work on red carpets, awards shows, and album covers. Join our rodeo to learn about the industry around commissioned clothes for celebrities, the journey of his chain stitch embroidery machine, and why he remains in Indiana. Episode 128: Guide & Anchor, Joey and Sara Jean Potts Aug 28, 2019
    Show notes

Two artists meet at a bar… Fortunately, this week’s episode is no joke because we hear the stories of Illustrator Joey Potts and Animator and Art Director Sara Jean Potts from Guide & Anchor. Sara’s story starts in upstate New York, where MTV inspired her interest in experimental film and led her to move to Chicago for school (#trainball). Joey went to school in Baltimore for illustration before moving to Chicago to get plugged into its art scene, which is where he met Sara while she was bartending. During their time in Chicago, Sara started an experimental film festival and even worked for Oprah, and Joey became the beer label artist for 18th Street Brewery. After craving financial freedom to take control of their careers, the two decided to move to Indy, and Guide & Anchor was born. You will now find Guide & Anchor designing for many local businesses, including Tinker Coffee Co., Brewers of Indiana Guild, and even Drink Culture Podcast.
