    Show notes

Feel full-body chills as the leader of the Irvington Ghost Tours, Al Hunter, reveals the haunts of Irvington. When he started his research, residents were hesitant to share what haunted their homes and community spaces. Now his nearly three-hour tour attracts hundreds of people from all over the midwest for stories of H.H. Holmes. D.C. Stephenson, and the heroic woman whose actions sparked the fall of the KKK. Tune in to learn about the research behind the Irvington Ghost Tour, the history of Irvington, and a sneak peek into some of the most hair raising and spine-tingling stories that you could hear on your tour. Episode 136: Phil Powell, IU Kelley School of Business at IUPUI Oct 16, 2019
    Show notes

“Education is a great way to uplift humanity.” Phil Powell, the Associate Dean of Academic Programs at the IU Kelley School of Business at IUPUI, is passionate about using higher education to cultivate talent for Indiana companies. Phil grew up wanting to change the world and discovered through trial and error that understanding markets was the most beneficial method. Now, as an enthusiastic economist, Phil discusses the juxtaposition that the US is currently experiencing: Better jobs and working environments, but more poor people. Since the talent pipeline and solution to poverty starts by increasing support in early childhood education, the IU Kelley School of Business is working to change the culture of education in Indianapolis. In addition to the talent shortage, Phil touches on their work broadening business opportunities and bringing innovation to healthcare. Break out your compass to start drawing your demand curve as Phil sheds light on many of the drivers of economic and social problems and solutions in Indianapolis, highlights the impact of IU Kelley School of Business’ efforts, and even shares the story his first cup of coffee, which happened at 40 years old. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Phil Powell from IU Kelley School of Business at IUPUI.

Influenced by her math-loving father, she approaches her art technically from the “how” versus the “why” perspective. On the flip side, Ish Muhammad grew up in NYC on the lower east side, surrounded continuously by public art and graffiti that emphasized the “why” versus the “how.” For Ish, “…being creative has always been a reality,” which has inspired his passionate graffiti work around the nation. Dismantling Systemic Racism with Brian Payne From CICF Oct 04, 2019
    Show notes

How do we create an inclusive city? If anyone knows what it takes, it’s Brian Payne. Join us on Monday, September 9th for a lively discussion with Brian Payne, President and CEO at the Central Indiana Community Foundation and President of the Indianapolis Foundation. Find out how we can help create neighborhoods and environments that empower people, change systems that unfairly hold people back, and dismantle systemic racism. Get the scoop on what it takes to create an Inclusive City and hear their plan for a more equitable Central Indiana. CICF Strategic Plan: At CICF, we’re going all in. We have a new mission to mobilize people, ideas and investments to make this a community where all individuals have equitable opportunity to reach their full potential— no matter place, race or identity. We have goals that will take years—if not decades—to achieve. We know this work is complicated and we will make mistakes. We need this community to learn with us, hold us accountable and become our partners. We are committed to doing the work, but we cannot do it alone. If we want Central Indiana to be a healthy and thriving community with inclusive economic growth, something has to change. We cannot stay comfortable. It’s time to reach for more—more opportunities and a more equitable playing field. About Brian Payne: Brian Payne is the president and CEO of the $800 million Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) and The Indianapolis Foundation. Since he joined CICF in November 2000, the foundation’s annual grantmaking has more than doubled to over $50 million. CICF’s mission is to mobilize people, ideas and investments to create a community where all individuals have an equitable opportunity to reach their full potential—no matter place, race or identity.

Episode 134: MilesHerndon and Gavel, Daniel Herndon Oct 02, 2019
    Show notes

Daniel Herndon’s story is one that reminds us of how many non-traditional paths have excellent outcomes, that a career is a concept, not a necessity, and how grit is essential for success. Daniel grew up as one of twelve children in the Sunshine Inn, his home during the week and a public music venue on the weekends. Although homeschooled, the variety of guests that would attend the music events at his home exposed him to many cultures. Daniel was a natural entrepreneur and was always creating jobs for himself. His family couldn’t afford the curriculum necessary for him to finish high school, and without college experience, he still received an internship with the University Loft company. Daniel eventually felt that his creativity was being stifled in the business world and started a band that he worked for full-time on for 1.5 years. As many musicians do, he learned the business side of music and eventually transitioned into marketing. Today, he owns MilesHerndon, which helps brands with branding and marketing strategy, and Gavel.
