Episode 123: Ruckus Makerspace, Consuelo Poland Jul 24, 2019
    Show notes

Consuelo Poland is creating a commotion in the Indianapolis creative scene with the Ruckus Makerspace. Her artistic background began when she used drawings to communicate with her new family after being adopted from Guatemala. Her natural talent led her to the Kendall College of Art and Design, where she earned a BFA and continued her education to obtain a welder's license. She arrived in Indianapolis as the Ruckus Makerspace project was beginning and was recruited to lead the organization. Three years later and Ruckus has outgrown its creative capacity and space, so it's opening a new location just off of Massachusetts Avenue. To fulfill her passion for communicating between the White and Latino communities, Consuelo also leads the Latinas Welding Guild and speaks on behalf of her community. Grab your welding mask and light up your torch as we learn about the support available for creatives in Indianapolis, how to accurately value your work as an artist, and how the Ruckus Makerspace has the resources for your next big idea. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Consuelo Poland of Ruckus Makerspace. Visit the Ruckus Makerspace website here! Review the episode on iTunes, Twitter, and Facebook! Episode 120: Tastings, Ross Bailey Jul 03, 2019
    Show notes

It's Wine Wednesday, so take a sip with us and learn the story of Ross Bailey, the owner of Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro. Ross was born and raised in Indiana and, like a true Hoosier, went to IU for his undergrad. As law school was approaching, Ross' friend told him about a children's camp for sustainability on Catalina Island. A few months later, Ross was a boat captain for the camp and biking down the California coast while studying harder to learn about environmentalism than for the LSAT. When he returned to Indiana, he launched Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro with his family in the adjourning space to Conrad Indianapolis. At the time, he knew little about wine and had never run a business, but is now managing two Tasting's locations. Pour another glass and learn about the innovations at Tastings Wine Bar & Bistro to make wine accessible, the real story behind the fads in the wine industry, and Tasting Wine Bar & Bistro's Vintage Wine Truck that bring us what we've always wanted: wine at outdoor events. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you with Ross Bailey of Tastings.

Episode 118: Conner Prairie, Norman Burns Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

When's the last time you visited Conner Prairie? If it was for your fourth-grade field trip, you're in for a treat. Norman Burns, the CEO of Conner Prairie, invited us to the Golden Eagle Inn to share colonial time appropriate cocktails, his story, and the story of Conner Prairie. Norman 's passion for studying history was sparked in his youth. He spent time with his grandparents in Tennessee listening to and learning about the human experience through stories of his grandparents' friends and neighbors while out and about. Fast forward through years spent in college and working in Virginia, Norman is now CEO of Conner Prairie and shares with us the intricacies of how they create a historically accurate place for people to engage with the colonial times in Indiana. Conner Prairie is named after William Conner who built the brick home on Conner Prairie's property; however, don't forget about his brother because he may still be haunting the location to this day (off the record, of course!). Learn about the economic impact of Conner Prairie in Indiana, their activities from tomahawk throwing to hot air balloon rides, and the conclusions from our hot-topic conversation on the comparison of the U.S. government's recognition and support towards historic preservation and education versus the rest of the world. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Norman Burns of Conner Prairie. Visit the Conner Prairie website here! Review the episode on iTunes, Twitter, and Facebook!

    Episode 117: #KeepAnnDancing Jun 25, 2019
    Show notes

Why must we keep Ann dancing? Who is Ann? And, how does she reflect the culture of Indianapolis enough to deserve our attention? Join the leaders of the Keep Ann Dancing campaign, Kären Haley, Chris Gahl, & Mindy Taylor Ross and us as we candidly discuss the campaign that has Indy debating the importance and value of public art. Mindy Taylor Ross, the Curator and Public Art Project Manager for the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick during the installment of Ann Dancing, unveils the history behind the purchase of Ann, Ann's increasing need for maintenance from Dr. Phil, and provides perspective of public art in Indianapolis versus other cities. Kären Haley and Chris Gahl reveal what catalyzed the campaign, how the funds are being used, and why they chose to do what's never been done before: crowdsource funding for public art. Listen to the story behind Keep Ann Dancing unfold as we share a drink around the table of Bluebeard's Second Story private dining space overlooking the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (home to more art pieces than mentioned in this episode). Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Kären Haley, Chris Gahl, & Mindy Taylor Ross of Keep Ann Dancing. Episode 116: Powderkeg, Matt Hunckler Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

There’s another Hunckler building community in Indianapolis? This week we chat with Matt Hunckler about the entrepreneurial career that led him to accidentally start Powderkeg. Matt, brother to alumni Josie Hunckler of Rabble Coffee, spent his youth designing buildings, desirous of being an architect. While visiting friends at IU during his freshman year at Purdue, Matt would drop-in to the #1 rated entrepreneurship school in the country where he learned how concepts like accounting and finance were the building blocks of a business. As you might expect, Matt transferred to IU, where he started his first business after listening to alumni Scott Hill's presentation about his experience as an entrepreneur. After graduation and while in the Orr Fellowship, he started a group called Verge for entrepreneurs in the tech space to get feedback on their projects. It wasn’t his intention for it to grow, but it’s now a comprehensive, curated platform to connect the right people to the right culture in tech. Specifically, in areas that do not have a dense population of talent. Take a sip of your Hotel Tango whiskey as we learn about how vital culture match is to employee retention, about the growing tech community and industry, and the struggles of growing a lifestyle business. We even have a special, uninvited guest who tunes in. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you this week with Matt Hunckler of Powderkeg.

Episode 115: Bottleworks, Rob Gerbitz Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

Bottleworks. With one word, we have the attention of every person in Indianapolis. In this episode, we talk to the guy behind its vision - the CEO of Hendricks Commercial Properties, Rob Gerbitz. The Wisconsinite grew up with a father in the family restaurant business. From his experience helping his dad, Rob knew that he didn't want to run the family restaurant business. The restaurant did, however, lead him to his passion when one of his customers invited him to interview at the customer's property management company. From day one, Rob knew that he was addicted to the fast-paced chaos in property management. As he grew in the industry, he learned the value of a visionary leader and how to balance chaos and organization. Rob exited his own company with the intent to take time off work; however, he quickly realized that life without work is boring. When he interviewed with Hendricks Commercial Properties - which is owned by Diane Hendricks who is rated #1 for Forbes’ American Self-Made Women - Rob recognized that it was a special place to work. Tune in to learn about the property management industry, the importance of details, and the smell that fills the Ironworks Hotel.
