    Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs

Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs is a cozy corner of the internet for high-functioning humans with big feelings — the capable ones who get things done but quietly wonder if something’s missing.
If you’re the unicorn in a power suit (or a perfectly neutral sweater), building a life that looks “right” on paper but still craving something freer and more alive — you’re in the right place.

Hosted by therapist and author Danielle Ireland, this show feels like sitting on the couch with your best friend — if your best friend happened to be a therapist. Together, we untangle burnout, anxiety, pressure, and comparison, and learn how to turn emotions into allies instead of obstacles.

This is a space for comfort, community, clarity — and a few laughs along the way.
Because you deserve calm without having to earn it.

Introducing Session Reflections - What do I do when my feelings and needs aren't understood by people who love me? Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

There have been SO MANY moments when I'm in a session with a client where I think to myself, "Gah! I wish more people could hear this!" Enter - Session Reflections.

These solocasts are my way of letting you be a fly on the wall for some of the most incredible insights that my psychotherapy clients experience. The details about who they are will be omitted to protect their privacy, as well as many of the details about their specific experience. What will be shared are profound insights, BIG hearted questions, and lessons that I find myself thinking about hours after these sessions are over.

Think of this like a little dose of therapy, but without all the work and you get to skip to the end.

In this episode, I talk about validation and boundaries. More specifically, what do we do when people we love don't understand, support or agree with what we're feeling?

LISTNERS FAVORITE: An FBI negotiators take on connection, communication, and trust. Danielle X Gary Noesner. Dec 21, 2021
    Show notes

Meet Gary Noesner - author, instructor, investigator, and FBI negotiator.

Gary served as the lead hostage negotiator during the first 25 days of the 51-day siege in Waco TX. His book Stalling for Time, My life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator became the framework with the Netflix mini-series WACO.

In his words, "I've talked about WACO more in the past couple of months than in my entire career, but if you don't know history you're destined to repeat it."

We explore what it feels like to be negotiating relationships from every angle in crisis situations, and how the lessons from these experiences can apply to everyday life.

There were so many great parts of this conversation, but my favorite takeaway is this: The best answer you can give is the most truthful - even if it's, "I don't know."

Performing, perfectionism, and falling flat on your face. Danielle x Carey Anderson Nov 09, 2021
    Show notes

Meet Carey Anderson, a former Broadway performer turned therapist. Carey and I sit down to talk about what it looks like to put yourself out there and get rejected - over and over and over again. What we both learned from our time in the performing arts, and what led to making the career leap to psychotherapy.

What I love about this episode is how well it demonstrates that though the details of our life are so diverse, the things we want out of life are the same. We want our life to have meaning, we want to be of value to others, we want to know we matter. Carey and I explore how we help our clients in these areas, and how we navigate them ourselves.

Betsy is the author of several popular books, including the "Autobiography of an Orgasm" and "Write On: A Daily Writing Practice for Anyone with a Story to Tell." She's a screenwriter, performer, speaker, writing coach, and guide for women to help retrieve the hidden parts of their stories. Happiness comes from achievement, right? Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

Today, I want to talk about taking a step back and listening to your emotions, but what does it mean exactly?

    Examples would look like:

    • Feeling irritable or overly tired
    • Having some form of difficulty in your everyday routine
    • Unclear on why you are feeling a certain way

More often than not, we can determine what is contributing to our changes in mood. However, there are times when it's hard to pinpoint the root cause of your distress, and that's when our emotions are trying to tell us something.

In this episode, I want to talk about my self-reflection and how I'm finally at a place where I can feel when something is off. Not just conceptually, but knowing that my emotions are information and a key component to understanding myself and finding more peace and joy. I'm also going to talk about the realization that I had and how it slowly became clearer during maternity leave and while giving birth.

Don't worry; we're not going to be talking about birth and babies.

But we are going to be talking about what I like to call the "messy middle" To do that, I want to walk you through my realization and how I was able to create space to question it, get curious and look at it from different angles, and how that led to my the result. Hopefully, by listening to this, you may be able to get a feeling of your own that you want to get curious about, and hopefully, this can be beneficial to wherever you are in your emotional health and emotional wellness journey.

    Force'n it. A solocast. Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back!!! It feels so good to be back in front of the microphone and talking with you all again. Many of you know that I have been on maternity leave for the last few months. Once a week, maybe even more than that, I started thinking about making the transition and getting back into work and coming off of maternity leave, which is crazy because maternity leave suggests that I was not working and taking the time to do what exactly?

Now, we all know what maternity leave looks like, of course. However, coming out of this so-called "maternity leave" and stepping back into work, I'm scratching my head because I'm working but also still "mothering," right? I'm still wrapping my head around how everything in life has changed, from parenthood to motherhood, but I'm still the same person.

That's why I'm excited to be back because this space that I've created allowed me to express my curiosity, feelings, and every aspect of my life that is too confusing to deal with alone. The beautiful part about this conversation that we will have today is that you don't have to do it alone, and the best things in life are shared. And if you're listening to today's episode, you are probably trying to figure things out just like the rest of us cause Lord knows that I'm still trying to figure it out myself.

Changing our relationship with change series - Pt. 4. Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

This stage, I lovingly call - > Embrace the suck. ⁣ ⁣ The truth is, change is hard. Even when we know it's good for us and ESPECIALLY when it's something we really really want. ⁣ ⁣ The greater our desire:⁣ ✔️The higher the stakes⁣ ✔️The more we have to lose⁣ ✔️The more vulnerable we feel if it doesn't work out⁣ ⁣ "Embracing the suck" doesn't mean that every step along the way will be a painful one. What it means is that even when it's hard, even when you doubt yourself -> you can move forward anyway. ⁣ ⁣ Waiting to feel comfortable before you start may mean you're waiting a loooooooong time. Don't wait. You're worth it. And what you desire most may just be on the other side of this last step!⁣

    Enjoy!
