    Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs

Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs is a cozy corner of the internet for high-functioning humans with big feelings — the capable ones who get things done but quietly wonder if something’s missing.
If you’re the unicorn in a power suit (or a perfectly neutral sweater), building a life that looks “right” on paper but still craving something freer and more alive — you’re in the right place.

Hosted by therapist and author Danielle Ireland, this show feels like sitting on the couch with your best friend — if your best friend happened to be a therapist. Together, we untangle burnout, anxiety, pressure, and comparison, and learn how to turn emotions into allies instead of obstacles.

This is a space for comfort, community, clarity — and a few laughs along the way.
Because you deserve calm without having to earn it.

Don't Cut Your Own Bangs ep. 43 with Tanorria Askew!

After speaking on a panel together for Hive Indy, I was struck by Tanorria's mix of authenticity and humor.

In this week's episode we talk about her career in corporate America, taking a leap of faith to audition for Master Chef Season 7 ... spoiler alert - she made it, and coming home to Indy to combine her passion for for creating connection and building communities around the dinner table.

We talk about what it means to take a leap of faith, what it feels like to tell the truth, and knowing when to say No and when to say Yes.

PS, this episode will be best savored by keeping notepad and a snack handy.

Today I'm talking to Leah Carey , sexual communication coach and creator of the podcast - Good Girls Talk About Sex.

Leah has a unique ability to discuss sensitive topics with candor, authenticity, and humor. In this episode we explore the power of pleasure, asking for what you want, and honoring what you need.

In her words, "I believe that taking control of our sexuality, speaking up for our needs, and talking honestly about what really matters is the essence of goodness, kindness, and integrity."

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and can't wait for you to hear it.

Leah offers some tips that are noteworthy. Keeping a pen and piece of paper handy is HIGHLY recommended.

The only "cure" is to take action. Danielle x Casey Jordan Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Casey Jordan is a TEDx and Keynote speaker who's passionate about helping clients to shift from surviving to thriving and has message that we can all benefit from:

    Stop wasting your time.

An Iraq war veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Casey has a deep value and appreciation for making the most of each day. She and I discuss her experience of surviving an explosion, the impact it had on her mental and emotional wellbeing, and her journey to re-discover what true wellness looks like for her now.

We go deep in this episode, but I have to say that through conversations about trauma, anxiety, and pain we still found so many opportunities to laugh.

Casey has a grounded quality about her and the type of authenticity that seems to say, "Yeah. Tough things happen. You're going to figure it out, and if you need a hand give me a call."

I loved this conversation, and I know you will too. Get ready to sit back, relax, and learn from Casey Jordan.

A Miscarriage. Danielle shares her personal experience with loss, grief, & learning. Feb 18, 2020
    Show notes

Last June at 13 weeks pregnant, I experienced a miscarriage. The physical, mental, and emotional toll the experience took on my husband and myself was heavy.

I knew shortly after this was a story I wanted to share and needed to tell, in part for my own healing (I'm an external processor). I also felt this was my way to honor the grace that had been given to me.

I now recognize that - in the early stages of healing - part of my recovery was credited to a group of nurses who came into my hospital room, took my hand, looked me in the eye and shared their story. Their generosity was like a salve to my heart, and likely the only thing I could've handled hearing.

    Not - "It'll be okay."

But rather - "You're not alone."

If this is a message you need to hear please know -

    You are not alone.

It was also equally as important for me to share all of the confusing shades and colors that came out of this experience. Not just the obvious grief, but the way it brought my husband and I closer together. The way we used inappropriate humor to laugh through our tears, and how it informed the choices we made moving forward.

Thank you for being on this journey with me. We're in this together.

From TV marketing to Goat Yoga & Philanthropy. Danielle x Erin Peckinpaugh Feb 04, 2020
    Show notes

Where do baby goats, farmer's markets, and fighting food scarcity in Indianapolis meet? One woman ---> Erin Peckinpaugh.

Erin, is bravery personified. Upon reflection, it's clear that she trusted an internal knowingness that her career path needed to change in a major way- AND she didn't gloss over her accompanying experiences with uncertainty and doubt.

When we're in the midst of a major life transition, it's nearly impossible to see ourselves as brave because feeling terrified is such a big part of change.

What encouraged her to push through was the story of a young boy who with a patch of dirt and a handful of seeds, fed his neighbors and shortly thereafter, his community.

If you've been thinking about making a change in your life, you may want to keep a journal handy for this episode;)

1: Introducing: Don't Cut Your Own Bangs with Danielle Ireland Aug 06, 2018
    Show notes

Hi, I'm Danielle Ireland, and I love talking to people. So much so that I made it my profession, and now solicit friends and colleagues to talk about their life with a microphone in their face;) The purpose of this podcast is to remedy the "I'm alone," "I suck," and "everyone seems to have it all figured out but me" feelings. I wanted to remind myself, and you, we aren't alone.

I am endlessly fascinated by people who, in the face of fear, try to make their dreams a reality & who can find the joy or humor in the struggle. I LOVE a good story; a story of fear, doubt, and eventually TRIUMPH (the hero's journey). The only problem was that in my real life, I felt like I was surrounded by before-and-after stories...

Before - "I used to feel miserable, scared, and alone...just like you."

After - "NOW, I'm happy, amazing, and everything is awesome!"

I'd hear these stories, or see these images on social media and think, "SWEET! Me too! Sign me up!" Then, I'd go to do the work, and fall flat on my face. I wanted to hear more about the messy middle. What happens when things don't work out?

What did the journey look like, feel like, smell like, taste like, etc. on your way to the top???

I invite you to join on my journey through the messy middle (Brene' Brown).

It won't be perfect, but it will be a helluva good time.
