[9:25] Reflective and Volitional Flexion [10:58] Danny and Joe begin their discussion on recovery. Danny starts it off by talking about the need to quality sleep. [26:33] How non fatiguing muscle contractions, like those from a Marc Pro, can also be helpful toward recovery. http://marcpro.com/ [28:38] Cryo Therapy is getting a lot of backing from professional athletics. Anthony Almada Take 2: Testimonials are for Sunday School – Creatine Monohydrate is King, N.O. products are debunked, Magnesium and Zinc Supplementation are Cleared Up, Plant based Multivitamins are Hocus Pokus, and PED’s in CrossFit. Nov 11, 2015

Creatine Monohydrate is King, N.O. products are debunked, Magnesium and Zinc Supplementation are Cleared Up, Plant based Multivitamins are Hocus Pokus, and PED’s in CrossFit. Click here to Check out Anthony’s first show Small Talk Anthony Discusses his vendor experience at the 2015 CrossFit Games, the shoe wars between Reebok and Nike and how the increased TV coverage may be effecting live attendance. [8:35] There have been many different types of creatine to enter the market since EAS first introduced it to the sport supplement market. Anthony lays out his recommendations. As far as the research goes, creatine monohydrate is king. [15:45] Anthony provides some key advice for anyone taking supplements to find the products that work best. The key is simply being a good consumer. Simply ask the companies for the head to head independent research regarding their products. The key is getting off the message boards, avoiding bro science and reading independent comparative research. [19:00] For folks adding creatine to their regime, dosage and timing are important. Anthony clears up the difference between loading and maintenance phases and what his research has shown to be the best way to adminster creatine loading. [23:00] The key to effectively taking creatine monohydrate is dissolving it in hot water, doing so illuminates bloating and GI distress. [24:45] Anthony discusses why taking creatine as a pre workout is a complete waste of time. Creatine is not caffeine. It takes days and time to work. [26:54] Anthony continues to discuss creatine and lays out the dosage and timing recommendations that his research has shown to be best. To increase creatine transport into the muscle the key is taking it every 5-6 hours with either 75 grams of carbohydrate, or 50 grams of carbohydrate and 50 grams and protein. [31:00] Anthony discusses, actually debunks, N.O. products and their use in pre work outs. According to Anthony, most of the N.O. products on the market utilize stimulants to mimic a pump, and he is not convinced any of these products do anything to increase muscle blood flow. Anthony suggests that you go to your supplement store and ask for N.O. products that aren’t laced with stimulants – good luck getting results. [37:30] The best evidence to leverage the Nitric Oxide path is via beet root juice. Neo elite is an interesting company developing products and have interesting data regarding beets and performance. [41:10] Danny asks what Anthony’s take is regarding Magnesium and Zinc. [49:16] Multivitamins are discussed. According to Anthony they always need to be discussed in relation to the athlete’s diet. There is also no head to head independent research to show that plant based multivitamins are any better into cells than their synthetic counter parts. [57:34] VitargoS2, head to head against multi dextrose is the faster into muscles. [63:45] What are muscle biopsy studies and what are the complications. [67:25] Anthony discusses the use of PED’s in the CrossFit Games and Elite Performers in the CrossFit Community. According to Anthony up to 40% of the Elite Athletes participating at the Games, at some point in their training year, had taken some form of PED. Cheryl Haworth – The Princess and the Platform Nov 04, 2015
    Show notes

Intro and small talk Cheryl Hayworth is a name any American interested in Weightlifting needs to know. She is one of, maybe only second to Tommy Kono, the most decorated American Weightlifters in the country. Competing so long and so successful she has forged some great relationships and created wonderful memories; two things I learned that she prioritizes over any metal. [3:31] Cheryl discusses how she came to develop a relationship with Texas Barbell head Coach Ursula Garza Papandrea and a clinic the two will be heading up just outside of Austin Texas. Click here for details and to purchase your spot! [7:26] We learn where Cheryl will be coaching in Hong Kong and the friends who she will rely on to help her develop as a coach. [9:46] Cheryl discusses how, although her body type may not fit the norm, why she is a well-balanced, confident and a happy person. According to Cheryl the key is a support structure and being around people that could make her laugh. [15:57] Cheryl describes a scenario where she was able to use humor to diffuse a tense situation in a competitive setting. [18:09] Adversity is something all athletes have to manage. Cheryl discusses adverse situations she was able to overcome. One concerning an athlete she was coaching and another that involved blowing her elbow out while competing. [25:15] Cheryl is asked to describe the support structure that made it possible for for her overcome a destroyed elbow to win Nationals and qualify for the Olympics. [30:00] Cheryl discusses the influence and history of her mother. Both of which contribute to Cheryl pursuing her dreams. Cheryl’s mom wanted to be a brick mason but her father wouldn’t allow it. Later in life she pursued the air force in hopes of becoming an astronaut but was also denied. That lack of opportunity pushed Cheryl’s mom to allow her daughters to pursue and experience whatever their heart desired. [33:41] Cheryl is now pursuing a coaching career of her own and discusses how her baggage as a human and athlete are currently effecting her interactions with athletes. During this part of the discussion we also find out that Cheryl was often terrible in practice. In her mind she felt that her spirit as a world class procrastinator was the culprit. She didn’t hold back during training but couldn’t tap into that same fire that the competition setting presented. [37:39] I play devil’s advocate with Cheryl and ask her if she believed the competition volume impacted the longevity of her career. [39:53] We get into training specifics and Cheryl discusses ways that she may have adapted her training as a youth and competitive Weightlifter looking back. In her opinion she was never very strong and would have also spent more time learning the power variations. This is also a portion of the conversation where we learn why Don McCauley named Cheryl the Princess and the Pea. Looking back what Cheryl would have worked on would have been stability, especially in her elbows, and body building work to support her upper body. Her lower back was always a place of weakness that she would have spent some more time training. [44:37] Cheryl describes how the short comings in her own training will impact her coaching of future athletes. As a coach Cheryl wants her athletes to be in the sport of Weightlifting for the long haul and believes coaches can get into trouble when they find a strong athlete and test the limits of their athleticism to early. [47:57] Cheryl discusses how being humble can help coaches and athletes. [49:30] The subject of divisiveness in the coaching profession is discussed. She also discusses why she choose to coach with Ed Haynes at Coastal Fitness in Hong Kong.
