Managing Elbow Pain Apr 08, 2016
    Show notes

In E#67 Coach Joe provides a 3 prong attack, here is the general overview with some links to videos. Start at the joint: Often times we spend too much time in elbow flexion (driving, mouse..etc) and a little OG banded distraction (using a pull-up band to to create a better relationship between the joining of the humerus, ulna and radius) can clear some space up at the joint, help us move better and get rid of the pain. Check out a video from Doc Danny on how to distract your elbow here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr4SOY6ZtoM Forearm Smash: Coach Joe recommends Jill Miller’s bad ass Yoga Tune-Up ball to do some self massage and trigger point therapy work in the forearm. The basics here are get a ball, put it on a surface and get some weight on it and laterly grind through the fascial layers. If you don’t know how to smash go to http://mobilitywod.com and watch show sponsor Kelly Starrett teach you how. Check out a Jill Miller Yoga Tune Up ball here https://www.yogatuneup.com Blood Flow Restriction Training: This sounds sketchy, but by using a voodoo band with a 50% stretch + 50% overlay we cut off som circulation to the forearm and do some light wrist curls to help develop stronger muscle tissue. If you think this is outrageous then cruise over to an up coming podcast guest Johnny Owens’ web site to hear more and see how guys life Jadaveon Clowney is using it to recover from surgery. http://www.owensrecoveryscience.com Thanks again for the questions and keep them coming via the iTunes review! Dr. Theresa Larson Discusses Her Book: Warrior Apr 06, 2016
    Show notes

In episode 66 Doc Danny & Coach Joe sit down with Dr. Theresa Larson to discuss her new book Warrior. She fills us in on how being a Marine Lieutenant struggling with an eating disorder helped her turn into one of the world’s most badass physical therapist. Theresa Larson was born and raised in a log cabin on the outskirts of Seattle, fostering a love of the outdoors and an active lifestyle. After losing her mother to cancer at the age of 10, Theresa developed a resilient perseverance and determination that led to a collegiate scholarship and semi-professional softball career, top awards as a fitness competition contestant, and an appointment to Lieutenant in the Marines, where she led an entire platoon while deployed in Iraq. Her service was cut short when she was voluntarily evacuated due to an ongoing struggle with bulimia nervosa. Theresa’s journey to wellness required the bravery to ask for help, to take care of herself first, and abandon the idea of “perfect”. She is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy and the founder of Movement Rx, a physical therapy and wellness company that offers support to wounded warriors and individuals with health and movement issues. She travels all over the world as a speaker for MobilityWOD and the CrossFit Movement & Mobility Trainer Course. She is a lululemon ambassador, and works with nonprofits including Team Red White & Blue, LinderKids.org, Resiliency Project, CrossRoads Adaptive Athlete Alliance, and the National Eating Disorder Association. Theresa hopes that through sharing her story, she will help inspire others to empower themselves, embrace their inner warrior and re-define and acknowledge their strength.

The Tactical Athlete and Back Pain Apr 01, 2016
    Show notes

Dr. Danny answers a listeners question regarding tactical athletes and pain management. The prescription in this case is a lot easier send than done. The key, according to Dr. Danny, regarding the tactical community is getting them to buy in to the maintenance program. One of the keys is using the chain of command to your advantage. Start with small leadership groups and let your ideas roll down hill. Start at the hip mobility and utilize distraction focusing on posterior, lateral, and anterior openers. The fact is within the tactical community strength will most likely not be the issue. Also, spend some time teaching them how to hip hinge focusing on spine flexion vs hip flexion - the deadlift. Picking stuff up is unavoidable. That said, teaching folks to do it right may save you a lot of time in the clinic. Lastly, Gut smashing, made popular by Jill Miller, is also key. Check out her interviews here and here. With many folks in the tactical community training and practicing a lot of sit ups for testing purposes a lot of hip flexor tightness and abdominal abnormalities and tone can arise. The final prescription is a little counter intuitive, especially in a competitive environment like the tactical community. You may want to cut down on volume. Also be sure to check out EP25 - Lower Back Fixes.
