Bart Layton & Barry Keoghan - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #226 Aug 28, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 226 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A perfect movie based follow up to the incredible previous episode with Spike Lee, as Pip is joined by director Bart Layton and actor Barry Keoghan - both of ‘American Animals’!

An amazing chance to catch up with the pair as Pip rocks it tag-team style, starting the podcast with director Bart Layton and concluding halfway through with actor Barry Keoghan. Needless to say, with two sides of the story covered you get a comprehensive and detailed look at a unique pocket of the movie industry, a fascinating side of the indie film world and certainly longer than a regular press junket. You’ll get to hear about the realities of making and marketing a movie in a world of cinema and Netflix (or dare I say, cinema versus Netflix), the differences in those two worlds as well as the merits of both, the ludicrous nature of the premise of ‘American Animals’ and how it works as a film, how Barry is a grade A actor without formal training and how acting was not a conventional pursuit being where he is from. Naturally there is more besides but that’s down to YOU, dear listener, to unravel and enjoy. Which you shall. The recording is a touch on the reverberant side, which you might pick up on, but in headphones your ears will rapidly attune and all will be well. Now go see their filmographies already!

Spike Lee - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #225 Aug 23, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 225 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! It feels strange to refer to this episode as a bonus as it’s a full on spectacular - nevertheless, here is your Friday bonus as Pip is joined by the living legend director that is SPIKE LEE!

While Spike is getting his promotion grind on for his new film BlacKkKlansman (which you should make efforts to see as it’s just been released in the UK), he fit in some Pip time which is perfect as you know Pip is quite the cinephile! So this is a grand opportunity to get in some genuine directorial knowledge from a true long term veteran in the game. You will also witness a first in the Distraction Pieces Podcast as Spike lays down a “no comment” - more on that in the podcast! Ground covered includes how he’s always been around and this isn’t a return, how BlacKkKlansman wasn’t planned and how Jordan Peele put the bug in his ear, the 70’s look of the film while being contemporary, the natural humour in the film and how it derives from such a wild premise, the importance of music, how the director of photography needs to be in sync with the director, giving actors their debuts, rolling with the changes in cinema and establishing himself as the Spike Lee of all Spike Lee Joints! A huge episode. You will enjoy. It’s fair to say this is a Spike Lee Joint.

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 224 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A joyous encounter with the long time mate of Pip’s, the UK’s hit making rapper heavyweight EXAMPLE!

Very much in line with the awesome chat involving Professor Green in last week’s episode, this time Pip has a chance to get proper in with Example, as they go over just about everything, literally. Inspiring and encouraging, and very cool to hear the story from the man himself rather than read it in some gossip website or some such. Pip and Example have known each other for over a decade, and they get along super nice which allows for an access all areas chat ranging from London’s non-genre specific scenes back in the day, the blending of genres themselves, getting used to performing and knowing the ropes so not being a one-hit venue-sellout without any moves, being “shit” at sports and good with words, recording demos in Australia and starting small, working out his DIY grind, his time spent in the Mike Skinner BEATS shed in Kew, sharing residence in the UK and Oz, how he and Pro Green found themselves with Mike Skinner and honed their talents, being comfortable with standup comedy, his cinephile nature, being on Ministry Of Sound and all manner of music industry insider talk ALL INTERLUDED WITH A PIZZA BREAK and pizza oven talk. Told you it has it all. GO IN!!! And do peep his 'Bangers And Ballads' mixtape won't ya...

Professor Green - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #223 Aug 14, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 223 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week brings the long awaited and truly awesome guest Professor Green to the guest microphone, the rapper turned documentarian and so much more!

As always with the Distraction Pieces Podcast, the chat does most definitely NOT focus on the main aspect you might be expecting, but covers a crazy amount of ground in the time the two have. And what a range on offer… Mr Green is clearly suffering from the after effects of some good time fun (with mate Example) the previous night but comes through it in fine form, leaping from topic to topic with ease, including how hard it must be to be a horrible bastard, the current state of society, news overload, the loss of hands-on skills, his insane experiences in solitary (for documentary reasons), dealing with the stress and fear of negative emotions, feeling the feels and not using crutches, troubled past, how folk can become comfortable and not take part in society, the greater subject of dogs and his own documentary work on what are considered difficult breeds, education, role models, Brexit, his touring days with Lily Allen and the difference in live music these days. All with tons in between of course. So dig deep and enjoy this in depth chat with Professor Green!

Tony Law - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #221 Aug 07, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 221 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Some good old fashioned comedy gold for you this episode, as Pip is joined by Anglo-Canadian sensation Tony Law!

Well - it would be a lie to say the entire episode is 100% comedy… While Tony is heavily schooled in the trade of standup and panel, his life hasn’t been one long standing ovation by any means. Prepare for some hard hitting reflections from a man who has fought the real fight with alcoholism and addiction, bridge burning, and all that entails, while dealing with almost becoming homeless and losing a LOT. I mean, don’t be put off by that - you’ll be listening to the story of a man who has come through that with a confident outlook and a tale that can surely inspire and instil that same positivity in any one of us. And who can resist that accent too, come on now. So join Pip and Tony as they get down to business on such topics as how Tony tracked Pip down, rebuilding his life after sobriety and the steps involved in doing so, being wilfully obtuse as a comedian as a strategy, the underground vs the mainstream (ah that old chestnut), chasing the England punk ideal, his background in history tours and how that sharpened his improv tools, also how becoming sober sharpened his comedy tools, and overall becoming better through bad experiences. A lot going on but certainly a truly interesting story and one that will inspire and uplift. Listen in.

Birthday Party! - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #220 Aug 02, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 220 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, please recharge your drinks and ensure you have a party popper ready - it’s Pip’s birthday and we are gonna do it UP this episode!

Please join Pip and old mate Brett Goldstein (Superbob! Corner Boys! Films To Be Buried With podcast!) as they go IN on the Scroobius Pips (the only cocktail worth celebrating with at this time of year) and toast the big day properly, after being joined briefly by Pip’s mum very early on for some science on the postal service (not the band - the actual thing itself, her involvement with the ‘U3A’ (Cult or not cult? You decide!). Topics include how people can be insanely productive with a full family, bigging up mates, Brett’s film Superbob and the complexities within, cinema vs the small screen, how laughter is very hard to act, Brett’s experiences in the world of podcasting which he has recently gotten involved with (‘Films To Be Buried With is out NOW - links below), what it’s like for Brett on the other side of the mic, pilot season and just what it is, wanting US roles but being conflicted with the politics, and awards and the reality of them, what they mean and all that good stuff.

Oh lord it’s a packed one - so please, pour a rhubarb infused gin of your choosing with a healthy slug of Pepsi Max and kick back with Pip and Brett (and for a few minutes, Pip’s mum) as we all give Pip the bumps and play all the usual birthday games that get wheeled out at this time of year.

OH YES - SPOILER ALERTS - the film ‘The Square’ gets talked about from 59:57 til 1:03:00, and then there are some light spoilers for the film ‘Hereditary’ from 1:03:53 til 1:10:00 or so. YA BEEN WARNED!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PIP!

Chilly Gonzales - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #219 Jul 31, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 219 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! After a few weeks of hype, now is the time to see whether this hype is warranted… Well, spoiler alert - IT IS. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the grand piano set centre-stage which has been polished to within an inch of its life - Chilly Gonzales!

A chance to indulge in some pure musical poetry right here, people. You may know him from his rap days when he was down with the nu-skool electro-clash (what did we even call it back then?) crowd, or from his gorgeous modern classical piano performances, or indeed from his pop deconstruction videos on Youtube (or his crazy rabbit-hole worthy archive of videos!) - well, however you know the man, you will probably know that he is always incredible on these podcasts or whenever conveying stories, science or inspiration through a mic. Hear him join Pip as they bat stories back and forth, involving all kinds of gems including how a career path can look planned in retrospect, genuine skill vs wish fulfilment, how the piano can represent the atomic view of music and how it’s used all the time in all genres, the popularity of the pop song, how zooming in on the smallest element of a pop song can reveal so much, being disciplined but rebellious, his days playing in lingerie stores (and greater origin story), how you can’t practise performance and you can’t perform discipline and ALL kinds of other nourishing greatness. What a treat. Listen, fall down those Youtube rabbit-holes and enjoy Chilly Gonzales TODAY!

Dan Skinner / Angelos Epithemiou - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #218 Jul 24, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 218 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A double edged sword, or double sided stamp, or two way street, however you want to look at it this week, as Pip is joined by comedian and actor Dan Skinner AKA Angelos Epithemiou!

Whether you know Dan for his acting work in ‘Notes On Blindness’ or ‘High Rise’ (or his solid filmography at that), or his fantastic comedy work in general, OR you know him from his alter ego Angelos Epithemiou who has been a regular in Vic & Bob’s ‘Shooting Stars’ for many years now, you will love this chat with he and Pip as they chat about it ALL! From Dan’s own comedy career and acting routes and paths, to the ever present spectre of the Edinburgh Fringe, to potentially unlikeable characters and how there is a huge power in them (and a heckle-proof suit of armour by default), Pip’s desire for his own on-stage sleight of hand and how Dan almost became a pro plate spinner, Dan’s wishes to be a comedy character actor, Angelos’ origin story, public appeal and how comedy doesn’t have many genres (unlike music), his work in ‘Notes On Blindness’ and a tangent about consumer convenience and just so much more. Seems a shame to spoil it here doesn’t it… Well you’d better stream / DL this one and get on it immediately eh!
