DrunkCast (Mk10) - Part 1 - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #245 Dec 19, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 245 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Please be seated and comfortable, not to mention very open minded, as we welcome the OG DrunkCast crew to the microphones for - would you believe - VOLUME 10 of the DrunkCast circus! This is part one… There’s a lot of ground to cover… LET’S GO…

Beginning with a little Patreon dilemma which may be solvable with some audience smarts (holler!), along with big Pip’s plans for the next year podcast-wise (all very exciting, let me assure you), we then dive ALL the way into a cool glass of Slingsbury gin and cola beverage of your choosing as we join the original drunken mob for some musings and good tidings in general! So for those uninitiated, the OG crew consists of Pip, Chris Glasson of Hardcore Listing podcast/Redshift Rebels fame and Stu Whiffen of Hardcore Listing/Off The Beat & Track podcasts, as well as Pip, and it’s customary at the end of the year to celebrate accordingly. SO - gifts get gived, the Hardcore Listing podcast gets celebrated, wardrobe considerations are ruminated upon, the fate and contents of the unreleased DrunkCast episode are disclosed, the subject of censorship is broken down and birthday fun times are nattered about - oh it’s a packed on y’all and (Hans Gruber voice) “THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING”. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? There’s a conversation starter… Anyway - ENJOY! COME BACK TOMORROW FOR MORE!!!

Russell Kane - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #244 Dec 12, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 244 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A full on luxurious comedy extravaganza here as Pip is joined by the relentless powerhouse that is RUSSELL KANE!

A deep and dense but thoroughly engaging and very entertaining chat with Pip and Russell, covering a huge amount of goodness and insider knowledge, with comedy and politics and further beyond all being dealt with handily. From the madness of a comedian’s tour itinerary to how comedians experience a different kind of tiredness, the two kinds of comedians - writers of shows and translators of experience, the Darwinian mode of comedy as well as his own ‘Oxbow Lake’ method of comedy, post-modern guilt, house ownership, realities of education, his origins and how his father enters the picture as influence, how to make a technical ‘dead Dad’ bit, “is this shit?” and SO MUCH MORE… Wonderful stuff. You shall enjoy.

Boots Riley - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #243 Dec 05, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 243 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Another very long awaited one here, as Pip is joined by director of the glorious indie hit ‘Sorry To Bother You’ and long-standing member of Oakland rap group The Coup - it’s Boots Riley!

“…as I went on I realised the main thing that I needed to give people was passion…”

Pip’s been lining this one up for a GOOD long while, before the hype was bubbling in the UK for Boot’s debut film as director, and the wonderful news is that it will be in the UK very soon! I for one am sick of reading tweets about how good it is from US people. So it’s great news that us UK folk get a piece… This is a perfect if slightly condensed connection with Pip and Boots, as they get into his desire to be Prince early on, theatre, film school, wanting to sound like Ice Cube, the mainstream-ness of documentaries, having faith in a great cast, his diverse cinematic influences, importance of wardrobe and “beautiful clutter”. Oh, and that whole Spike Lee thing too... Wonderful - enjoy, investigate the film ‘SORRY TO BOTHER YOU’ and go through the back catalogue of THE COUP at your nearest convenience!!!

David Lowery - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #242 Nov 28, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 242 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A directorial gemstone right here this week as Pip is joined by ‘Old Man & A Gun’s DAVID LOWERY!

“…that’s one of the things I always look for when I start writing, is like, how can i make this autobiographical… I need to find that thing that makes it connect to me…”

A fascinating sit down here, which is the perfect companion to last week’s film-based episode. Always crazy interesting to hear Pip talk shop with film industry folk as we always get a very pleasant insight into the world in which they inhabit without hearing the same stories or film summaries. With the release of David’s ‘Old Man & A Gun’ on the horizon, he gives us some nice background gossip on the film including the acquiring of Mr Tom Waits as a cast member, and how he maintained composure knowing it would be Robert Redford’s last film. Not only that, we get some further behind the scenes treats about ‘Pete’s Dragon’ and ‘A Ghost Story’ among others, as well as some inspirational nuggets on the power of collaboration, trust, and having a solid crew around you. ALL THIS while battling with a case of laryngitis, giving him the vocal quality of Tom Waits mixed with MF Doom. Wonderful!

Matt Palmer - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #241 Nov 23, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 241 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A full on ‘inside the director’s studio’ gem here this week on your Friday bonus episode, as Pip sits down with writer/director MATT PALMER!

“…you just have to make your peace with the fact that things take time…”

First off - have you seen Calibre on Netflix? Yes? Perfect. No? You know what? Also perfect. Either way, you’ll be hearing from the man behind this brutal but absolutely gripping thriller which will either provide you with behind the scenes nuggets of gold from the film, or fire up your hunger for watching it. A real professional chat with the two, with much range - from how the two organised this before the film blew up, his doubts in the film after festivals initially slept on it, seeing the film with completely different eyes to the viewer, the importance of being in a physical location space for an actor, the scourge of the modern superhero film, how Calibre went down well with the US as it’s rougher than the polish they might expect, relationships with the crew and how a film is so much more than the individual, and the hive mind that can spring from this attitude. All round goodness. You’ll enjoy!

John Cooper Clarke - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #240 Nov 21, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 240 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! You asked for it… The universe provided… Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the Bard Of Salford, the living legend - that’s right, this week Pip is joined by JOHN COOPER CLARKE!

“If I was a band I would have split up years ago…”

Hopefully you are aware of the fellow and his work, but if that’s not the case, well you have a glorious road ahead of you… Pip sits down with the legendary punk poet to comb through all the good stuff - being the force of nature he is, most of the heavy lifting is done by John himself but as you’ll hear, this is not a problem in the slightest. Just tune in and take a ride with the story telling genius and indulge in those sweet Northern tones. From history to now, it all gets covered - his inspirational teacher who encouraged him in all kinds of ways, cultivating his own style from the cast in his life and picking up little elements from everyone he appreciated, the cerebral of poetry vs the immediate of rock and roll, his love and adoption of American style and trends, aiming to be an ‘artist as professional citizen’, having the door to success opened to him by none other than Bernard Manning of all people, NO FLARES, gigging with The Fall, Chickentown, Arctic Monkeys, Michael Madson, and as you can imagine - AN IMMENSE AMOUNT MORE! So, so great. You’ll like this one.

His book 'The Luckiest Guy Alive' is out and about so grab that!

Michael Venom Page - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #239 Nov 14, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 239 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A long, long awaited meet up here as Pip is joined by the Most Valuable Person in this whole MMA business… It’s the phenomenal MICHAEL VENOM PAGE!

“I’m very present when I’m fighting, and it sounds weird to say but I’m not emotionally in the fight...”

Of course, MMA heads by now will just be clicking or tapping that download button without reading any further, but for those of you perhaps less familiar, you are also in for a real treat. MVP is an awe inspiring fighter, and for even the fairest weather fans of mixed martial arts his skill will dazzle you. With a unique style and mad victory set pieces, he’s become full on notorious in the sport and here he gets a good chance to catch up with Pip on all aspects, including the swiftness of the MMA universe, how he wants people to stick around for the whole thing - not just him, how you can enjoy and absorb so much more in MMA when you educate yourself on the moves, his family being into early kung fu film classics (must be some Wu Tang or 36 Chambers action in there somewhere), how hard it would be to transition to MMA from boxing, focusing on his strengths in training to catapult him to success, sprawl and brawl, having faith in his coach, being present in a fight and not studying tapes, how trash talk only works if it’s your true self talking it, being true to your personality, and everything else in between - including those amazing victory set pieces (as well as the full background behind the Pokemon one!). Inspiring talk from a positive and encouraging voice - a whole lot to enjoy. GO IN!

• NOTE! As Pip mentions in the intro, the sound isn't quite as sparkly as it could be, due to this being a backup recording. I've tried to get it as polished as possible, but there are intrusive noises at points... It's decent though - just wanted to give a heads up! Cheers yo! - Buddy Peace (producer)

Michaela Coel returns! - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #238 Nov 07, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 238 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Today marks the long, patiently awaited return appearance from the acting and writing superhero who is KILLING it left, right, center and diagonal - it’s Michaela Coel!

What exactly HASN’T she been doing since she was last on? Good lord… Michaela is unquestionably smashing it right now (and has been for a minute), starring in two Black Mirror episodes, feature film Been So Long, BBC drama Black Earth Rising and a lil’ indie grindhouse flick called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, no biggie. We can only dream of what she’ll be unveiling when we hopefully see her next time on here! A bunch of awesome ground is covered of course, in not that long, including her humble but confident, responsive social media outlook, carving her own paths growing up, the intentions behind any given script, not wasting time on things that don’t mean much to you, the hit series Black Earth Rising and the much loved director, heroes and villains, learning about Africa and all the education that came with Black Earth Rising, TV license and the value of it, John Goodman, handling heavier scenes and TONS tons more! Enjoy - you shall!
