Mary J. Blige - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #252 Feb 13, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 252 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Ladies and gentlemen, we are in the presence of R&B and soul royalty right here… Please be standing and welcome MARY J. BLIGE!

“…When you give your all, you win…”

Absolute solid gold crown wearing greatness for you here, as Pip sits down with the phenomenal Ms. Blige for a thoroughly entertaining and uplifting chat. She’s been making the rounds in promotion of her new starring role as ‘Cha-Cha’ in the amazing ‘The Umbrella Academy’, an adaptation of an equally amazing graphic novel, and she spent some time breaking down the whole experience with Pip in this rare interview. They get to cover a HUGE amount of goodies, ranging from her love of the script and its connections to real life, being educated in how to correctly beat up a person and do a ton of crazy stunts (until things got a touch too insane), the madness of the costumes, her love of learning and growth through roles, how she killed it in a Christmas play as a kid, growing up in the projects and how that didn’t allow much room for dreaming, her non-braggy style and, of course, her illustrious and celebrated music career (including her friendship and career beginnings with a young Notorious BIG!). From music to acting but without ever losing sight or sound of her backgrounds, it’s a heartwarming one here folks as you might expect from a true veteran of the entertainment industry. You’ll love it.

Joel Edgerton - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #251 Feb 06, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 251 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! With the release of the film ‘Boy Erased’ on the horizon, please welcome actor, film-maker, director, producer and now friend of the podcast JOEL EDGERTON to the Distraction Pieces hotseat!

“…Usually the moment you put the brushes down, sadly, is the point where you have the least amount of objectivity…”

A good, solid and enriching chat right here which defies its slightly shorter runtime, as Pip gets into business from the get-go with this multi-disciplined film maker. As skilled in front of the camera as behind it (with OCD tennis ball - all will be explained), you may well have seen Joel in any number of films. But you may well have also seen the directorial work, which forms much of the talk today as we co-incide with the release of ‘Boy Erased’, the thrilling “pray away the gay” real-life tale in cinemas over the country. Of course, there’s a HUGE amount other than that, including his recent trip to Ethiopia and his thoughts on charity, setting up his company, fallibility of characters, his love of writing and how he wanted to do everything in films, working on his other films including ‘Animal Kingdom’, gratitude on set and all manner of film-making tools which has sharpened over the years. Great one here, people. Engage and enjoy.

Richard E. Grant - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #250 Jan 30, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 250 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A glorious check in this week with one of England’s true treasures and gifts to the acting world, not to mention two watch-wearing Pip-twin, it’s Richard E. Grant!

Hopefully you will have caught his perfect video reaction to being nominated for an Oscar, which is of course well overdue but greatly deserved, or maybe you will have read about or even seen his new film ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’. In either case, if you have missed those, by all means CATCH UP with the quickness. But you will surely know Richard for his many varied performances throughout his illustrious career, which will DEFINITELY include the classic ‘Withnail And I’. That is a given. Add to that his star turns in films and shows like ‘LA Story’ (which forged a lifelong friendship with Steve Martin), ‘Girls’, ‘Game Of Thrones’ and a good four decades more, and there you have it. A carved in marble filmography of a true superstar right there. Covering everything including that Oscar nomination, the collaborative nature of film, how a testosterone-charged set is not always awesome, the grey area of memorabilia, the importance of casting directors, his booze allergy (believe it or not), his Swaziland origins, making theatres when he was kid and right up to the habit he shares with Pip of wearing two watches, it’s a packed episode. Go in and enjoy!

Adam McKay - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #249 Jan 25, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 249 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! We are BLESSING you this week with a full power bonus episode - oh you thought the week was over? Nah, not even close. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the director of surely some of your favourite films, it’s ADAM McKAY!

His new film ‘Vice’, which features Christian Bale as Dick Cheney alongside a star-studded cast, should be well and truly released at this point. Whether you have already seen it (lucky you) or you’re gearing up for a viewing in the near future, here’s your chance to get properly acquainted with the director himself, and get a very insightful glimpse into so many aspects of how he gets films made. Check his IMDB page for a full filmography (including Stepbrothers, The Big Short, Anchorman, The Other Guys to name a couple) and you’ll realise what insanely great company we’re in for this episode! In not a lot of time, hear Pip delve in on topics like the divisiveness of US politics, the ‘ghost’ version of what you make, history repeating itself, chopping out sections of films which don’t work even if he loves them, the process of getting films made from the beginning, casting and getting the right crew for a film based on real people, how he worked up to ‘cracking’ Christian Bale, and how hiring really good people is the key. Awesomeness at every turn. Enjoy!

Mark Millar - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #248 Jan 23, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 248 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A treat as much for Pip as it is for you this week, as he is joined by the actual living superhero of Marvel and Netflix (and an incredible amount more) - Mark Millar!

“…All I wanted to do was the stuff I loved growing up…”

Creator of just so much goodness in the greater superhero and comic book universe, Mark is a celebrated figurehead and all round god of all things fantasy and fantastic. A perfect episode to properly get to know the man behind some true classics in modern day comic and cinema, and bask in those addictive Scottish tones for a minute (which includes hearing him say “Nice wee chunk o’ change”, which is a delight). We join Mark as he stands before a tsunami of good things about to happen, covering everything from his non-enjoyment of holiday time or taking time off, the Wild West of Netflix and all the crazy action he is currently engaged in (which all sounds thoroughly exciting), how the postal service’s loss was our gain as he was a postie for five days (his longest stint at an actual job), how comic greatness can spring from working class family values, his relationship with Alan Moore, hearing interviews with people who aren’t selling stuff and his 20 minute rule. Of course you will receive all of the gossip and chatter within Millar World too, that goes without saying. It’s a proper goody right here - one for the comic nerds and novices alike, and even those with little or passing interest. Inspirational, enjoyable and joyful.

Films Of The Year 2018 - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #246 Jan 09, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 246 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is the one we’ve all been waiting for… Yes indeed ladies and gentlemen… More notorious than Richard Nixon’s enemies list… More important than the list of commandments… Here is the highly anticipated FILMS OF 2018 list from Pip’s lips to your ears!

Live and direct from One Tree Hill in Essex (you’ll hear why that name is incredibly misleading), join your hiking host as he breaks down a year of pure cinematic gold. And how does Pip assemble his list of films, after such a strong year? Oh, you’ll hear… You see, Pip has a very specific system. All will become known. So settle in and get into this one - but do remember, no superhero films here. You’ll understand why.

Also, please do bear in mind that this is PIP’S LIST! This is not your list. I mean this may seem obvious but some people take issue with a Pip list. Some people feel the need to proclaim how wrong Pip is in his selection. Or to pick him up on omissions, order, or personal rating. But listener - Pip does not make this list to contradict your own taste or your own lists. That’s not the point here. Let’s all just get along and enjoy the marvel that is the moving picture and celebrate the medium. Please enjoy the annual roundup of Pip film hits - episode 246, people, let’s GO!

Oh also - if you like dogs you'll love this episode all the more! Trust me on that.

DrunkCast (Mk10) - Part 4 - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #245 Jan 02, 2019

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 245 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A very warm and welcome HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all, it’s wonderful to have you back for what is guaranteed to be a HEAVY year for the Distraction Pieces Network! We begin with the conclusion of the four part DrunkCast spectacular, yes people, it’s that time where we say goodbye to the squad but not just yet - we still have an entire episode to enjoy!

This ties up many loose ends from previous episodes, and also gives many gifts and recollections of 2018, which range from a storming Get Cape Wear Cape Fly DJ set at We Are Lizards (Pip’s club night), the strength and courage of some very hardcore police force members during a London terror attack which developed some incredible acts of positivity, Chris’s hell year (which includes, among heavier subjects, his, ummm, bits and pieces and reparation thereof), the topic of relationships in general including that great porn elephant in the room, celibacy, exciting collaboration news, 2019 predictions and the voices of Mrs Glasson and the late Mr Glasson at the end to wrap things up in a very emotional bow. Past the booze and frequent coarse language, we have a truly lovely team here, ladies and gentlemen. Please, enjoy the company of Pip, Stu and Chris - the original DrunkCast squadron! All the best for 2019!
