Marc Goddard - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #206 May 15, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and six of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Absolute MMA heaven for you this week, but as ever with Distraction Pieces, this is not strictly for the hardcore heads - so don’t skip it if you’re on the fence about it or don’t follow it as religiously as some of us… (Yes I’m talking about Pip…) - there are gems and jewels to be gained from it as always! Anyway - disclaimers aside - please welcome one of the most revered referees in the business, Marc Goddard! A true masterclass in the complex and nuanced art of refereeing, about which Marc expounds on perfectly as he goes over past bouts, the success stories as well as the calls that still haunt him, the old days of UFC when it was all on VHS with only two rules (no biting and no eye gouging), the development of the sport from being a spectacle, his involvement with IMMAF (International Mixed Martial Arts Federation), his introduction into the world of MMA via his next door neighbour, the constant sport-wide evolution, the ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ life of a ref, new rule revisions, and just so much goodness from a wise, friendly figure in the sport. As stated earlier, one for the fans of course but also one for those not so acquainted with the world, and certainly one for those hungry to learn. A side of the sport that we don’t often hear from right here. Indulge.

Coralie Fargeat & Matilda Lutz - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #205 May 10, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and five of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A great Friday spot for you this week, as Pip sits down with director Coralie Fargeat and actor Matilda Lutz, creator and star of the indie horror film ‘Revenge’. All kinds of aspects are covered including of course the main elements of the film itself, the process of working with a smaller budget and the knock-on effects that has (and the imagination it inspires), crossings of languages and how it can help with an international release, dealing with foreign distributors, the audition process, darker entertainment from directors such as David Cronenberg, the film set out in Morocco and working in the cold, working with that amount of blood in such a small space (I’m sure a lot of horror fans’ ears just pricked up!), trusting the audience with your world and the importance of the director and actor relationship. And a lot more. A packed episode then, you could say! ENJOY! And go see the film if you get an opportunity…

Jamali Maddix - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #204 May 08, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and four of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A very heavily hinted at and teased episode for you here, FINALLY available for your ears - Pip is joined at long last by comedian and presenter of ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’, JAMALI MADDIX! A thoroughly entertaining episode as you surely expected, as Pip and Jamali sit down and chat it out like old mates, getting down to business on such topics as their mutual mate Guz Khan (the three of them sport the finest beards and beard connections are strong), the conflicts of interviews and too much personal info being revealed too easily, a lot of ‘Hate Thy Neighbour’ talk including how people don’t quite know where to place him racially and ethically which ultimately reveals limitations of the show’s participants, race and racism and where he’s at with such topics, how he’s not a ‘social justice warrior’ which doesn’t always lead to satisfactory or expected conclusions, paradoxes of freedom of speech, taking comedy seriously at 20 years of age, and how tension built up on set of ‘Hate Thy Neighbor’ (and how it was released). Fascinating stuff, and a perfect opportunity to get to know Jamali! Peep his tour dates out as well… He’s on road SOON…

Nick Halkes - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #203 May 03, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and two of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Pure music industry geekout material right here people, so make yourself good and comfortable and prepare to be pelted with nothing but gems on this one, as Pip is joined by Nick Halkes! Perhaps you’re not familiar with Nick by name, but best believe you will have felt his influence on the music scene in no small way over the years. The man responsible for XL Records, as well as signing The Prodigy and a HUGE amount more over a lot of record labels, Nick is someone to whom we should all be listening, re-listening, and taking notes like it was revision. Hear him expand on his beginnings as a mobile disco unit with his mate rocking two hi-fi units, how he knows Pip’s uncle Pat, how the best art comes from just getting out there and doing it without focus-grouping it, The Prodigy, doing well when a bidding war isn’t involved, the humble demo, mental health in the music industry, blagging his way into a New York radio station, casting your life correctly, the importance of parameters, passing up on signing Aphex Twin, and that is barely scratching the surface. The rest is there for you to explore. But be sure that you do. You will not leave dissatisfied.

Peep his new podcast ‘Trail Blazers’ which former Distraction Pieces Guest and homie Eddy Temple Morris, on Deezer!

Beans On Toast - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #202 May 01, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and two of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the one man standing on a chair troubadour favourite Beans On Toast, to get right into the ins and outs of how to refer to each other in terms of alter-egos and government names, to play solo or as a duo (and whether the Beans On Toast monicker applies to solo or band), the ascent from gigging locally to casually rocking arenas and now cruises, the appeal of festivals and a life of attending them, whether it’s a 9th or 10th anniversary of his first album, being the DMX of folk music (word to Pip on that one!), touring in a minimal fashion, attitudes towards newer music, not being married to your ideas, social media and a world of convo besides. Great stuff, and a very friendly chat which goes places a cold journalism interview wouldn’t. A ton for you here!

Cedric Bixler-Zavala - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #201 Apr 24, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode two hundred and one of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! 201! Imagine… Thanks for tuning in, folks - it’s a proper great one this week, featuring a heavyweight guest who Pip has been trying to link with for a good long while. Well it looks like those dreams have been fulfilled, as this week’s guest is none other than CEDRIX BIXLER-ZAVALA of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In and MORE!

Covering as much ground as possible in the hour they have before Cedric heads off to deal with the formalities of another live show, Pip and Cedric get deep into it from the very start - and there’s a ton to get through… To gloss over several of the talking points, you might get some insight into Cedric’s upbringing and being a Mexican American in Texas, the relentless and hypnotising tour schedule, the importance of being around like-minded and driven people and peers, growing up in a place with little or nothing going on and carving out your own opportunities, finding bandmates, drilling and finely crafting the sound of At The Drive In on the road through pure hard touring, his performance style (which has influenced Pip over the years) and how it was informed by breaking as well as Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and the lead singer of The Make Up, shaking up language, song origins, rough support slots and tough crowds, dealing with losses through his life - mainly people and dealing with the pain and sadness, and all wrapped up with some very dark Scientology talk, about which it is hard to not get angry about on his behalf. Nevertheless - it is a wonderful, far reaching chat and any fans of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In, Antemasque and the hardcore scene in general will get a huge kick out of this. Pure gold from start to end, from one of the friendliest sounding and nicest dudes on the scene. ENJOY!

Jess Thom (Tourettes Hero) - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #200 Apr 17, 2018

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 200 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Hardcore die-hard listeners (aka Team 3W) will have heard the word ‘welcome’ WELL over 600 times so far at the start of the podcast so add those three from just now to the pile… A huge, incredibly appreciative and gracious thank you to all of you for tuning in, and being a part of the 11 million plus listens to the podcast so far! Anyway, without inhaling our own exhausts too much here, let’s get going - this one’s an amazing one, and truly a chat for this milestone episode - please welcome Jess Thom, performer, comedian and founder of Tourettes Hero!

Tourettes affects people in all kinds of different ways, but a key feature is the ‘tic’ - an involuntary sound made by the person, with the ‘motor tic’ being an involuntary movement. Jess has spent most of her life living with both, the condition developing in her teens to how it currently manifests itself. So as you will hear, Jess has her own unique tics - her main one is the word “biscuit”, but you’ll also hear “hedgehog”, “sausage” and a good few more. The sound accompanying them is her tapping her chest, just so you know what’s happening. What makes this a truly unique conversation is listening to Jess talk with Pip, who has a stutter. Not only that, we get to hear so much about Jess and her life, what moves her, how she got involved in the arts, and the world outside of her own condition. It’s a valuable insight into disability too, as she offers some wisdom regarding how she moves within society, seeing the world through different perspectives, and whether or not she would take a ‘magic pill’ to eliminate the condition. If that’s not enough, hear her enlightening talking points about relaxed theatre and what that is exactly, how she got involved and her own theatre performance in ‘Not I’ by Samuel Beckett (and how she got that off the ground in the first place), including a British Sign Language translation - tics and all! It’s also interesting to hear her say her thoughts are “tic-free” too - it can be easy to forget that part. Oh, and find out what a “buildup of biscuits” is too. You might be surprised. Enjoy this episode with Jess Thom!
