Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Cinematic perfection is upon us once more, as Pip finally aligns schedules with the incredible and inspiring actor MYANNA BURING!

It’s another great one folks, but I mean when has the Distraction Pieces Podcast ever been less than? That was rhetorical. But seriously… Anyway - here’s a beautiful chance to enjoy a wonderful chat across the internet lines with MyAnna, who you will know from one of the most intense films in movie history The Descent, or equally intense movie Kill List, or maybe from the marginally less intense (depending on your age perhaps) Twilight saga. At any rate, if you are yet to make her acquaintance, prepare to make a new pal right here through a packed chat, containing everything including making the decision to pare down over lockdown, how groundbreaking The Descent was when looking in retrospect, help along the way (this podcast has spiritual guidance from Michael Smiley and Stephen Graham of course), stories being the backbone of society, on-camera process, the scale of Twilight, traveling a ton as a kid and her triangle of the Middle East, Sweden and the UK, hard bread and The Witcher! Finally though, here are your three commandments: 1. Know your lines; 2. Turn up on time and 3. Don’t be a dick. Easy! ENJOY!

Rahul Kohli • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #355 Nov 25, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

An ALMOST in person DPP right here - well, Pip and the guest being in the same city, in a country far far away from their respective homesteads anyway - please enjoy a brilliantly upfront and honest chat with actor RAHUL KOHLI!

I say upfront and honest - basically it’s one where sentiments aren’t hinted at, and feelings and thoughts are addressed in a mature and adult manner. He and Pip are currently in Vancouver, Canada, in the midst of filming in some very airtight pandemic conditions. You can hear all about that, which of course branches out into how life is in Canada, viewing the pandemic from a different country, the attitudes in the US, race and the media, privilege, social media tone deafness, becoming a Twitter celeb (not as glamorous as it sounds), what re-Trump-ing says about you, Mike Bithell and the amazing North Star Rising project he and Pip guested on, auditions, gaming voiceovers, acting, and the many intricate nuances of invoking Bollywood. It’s a packed one and it’s great. Get yerself in a listening situation.

A nice long chat with the dup, featuring so many topics it’s incredibly difficult knowing where to start with this writeup… Well, rest assured that the main points get properly dealt with - People Just Do Nothing and the universe contained within, the origins and developments in characters and overall show character, their own podcast Chattin’ Sh*t, and all manner of side (and centre) topics including The Sopranos, making excuses to hang out, phone anxiety, imposter sydrome (that old chestnut), majors and indies, comic influences, Towerblock Dreams, treating their references with utmost respect, rappers, festivals, live shows, films, acting and a perfect example of burying the lead which comes right at the end! Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Without a doubt, an episode that’s been a long time in the making - at last, Pip catches up with national trasure, poet, writer and lyricist BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH!

Pure enjoyment from the Birmingham legend as he and Pip catch up and talk about all things poetry but so much more… Beginning at the beginning of time itself, they move through viruses, “unpredictable” times, nature, the meat industry, finance and politics, squashing Twitter beefs, Bob Marley, doing gigs and slowly finding his crew, Life & Rhymes and everything contained within, finding and celebrating music in the words, performance poetry vs page poetry and of course, Peaky Blinders! Amazing. Commence listening immediately.

The Blaine Brothers • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #352 Nov 04, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Let the cinematic streak be unbroken, as Pip chats with the second brother combo on the podcast - it’s the directorial duo of THE BLAINE BROTHERS!

You may be familiar with the two from previous works such as Nina Forever (which was HIGH on a previous Pip’s films of the year list), and maybe you’ve already become aware of the Sara Pascoe series Out Of Her Mind (featuring Pip himself), but if not - prepare to investigate all of these and more when you spend some time in the company of the Chris and Ben Blaine! It’s a really engaging chat about all things film, as well as pre-lockdown days, playwright vs Da Vinci, letting yourself make mistakes, tearing up the film makers handbook, constraints, the fault of “Kill your darlings”, subconscious typecasting, their production process and making a BBC series - as well as just about everything else in between. Ace stuff, you’ll love it.

Ben Wheatley • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #351 Oct 28, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

The cinematic spirit is maintained wonderfully this week as Pip chats over zoom with director BEN WHEATLEY!

With Ben’s new film ‘Rebecca’ blessing screens on Netflix (and selected bigger screens), it’s a perfect time to catch the director and Pip crams a lot into his time with him… Everything ranging from the zoom press junket (and how it is infinitely preferable to the alternative), influences on a granular level, early films (his own as well as greats in the world of cinema), trailers and film posters, timesucking computer games, the old AALS chestnut (getting emotional on planes while watching filmes), period dramas, the casting process, genre in general and so much more that is all there for you to explore… Listen and watch ‘Rebecca’ at your nearest available convenience!

Taron Egerton • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #350 Oct 20, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

What better way to follow last episode’s acting aceness than with another UK treasure, yes indeed Distraction Pieces famsquad it is the brilliant TARON EGERTON!

As with so many of these episodes featuring the UK acting crew, there is an over-riding spiritual link by way of Stephen Graham, so props must be given to him first off! This one feels like another ‘long time coming’ episode, where it was just a matter of time and arrangements to lock it in. Naturally there’s lockdown talk up top, which is always fascinating as we all want to know how it’s been affecting each other - Taron’s found himself in Wales, which brings us to his upbringing (including Liverpool), and from then on you can expect some good talk on social media, RADA and family whip-rounds for auditions, early days (not THAT long ago!) on Kingsman, lessons learned through each film, voice acting vs acting-acting, Matthew Vaughn, Dexter Fletcher, Tom Hardy, his own filmography (including Eddie The Eagle and Rocketman to name a couple), and tons more. Uplifting and inspirational - you shall enjoy!

Maxine Peake • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #349 Oct 13, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

The perfect actorial masterclass and relaxed chat scenario as Pip meets the glorious MAXINE PEAKE!

Kicking things off with reflections of pandemic and lockdown times (essential to check in up top!), Pip and Maxine get into the whole acting biz and it’s a thrilling old journey - from acting itself and what it’s like being around yourself as an actor, to London fatigue and burnout, to venues in Manchester and up North, her paths and journeys, experiences at RADA, representation and diversity and how more is of utmost importance and the old fashioned character trait of ‘being Northern’. But so much more. A packed one, and one you will enjoy for certain.

Corey Taylor • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #348 Oct 06, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Metalheads rejoice, as you are about to hear a properly great chat with Pip and COREY 'MF' TAYLOR of SLIPKNOT!

While Corey may be in a relaxed and certainly not on-stage mode for the chat, that’s probably the perfect setting as we get to hear from the engaged, stoic and reflective Corey. Beginning with all things pandemic and quarantine, it’s actually the perfect place to start as a lot of his new material was recorded in a very responsible and safety conscious mode, but from there on we get to hear about his teen songwritings, fearlessness, collaboration processes overseas, filling up notebooks, depression bouts and mental health, and US politics - but all with a very keen eye on the positive. So it’s a great inspiration for those who are feeling it right now. Enjoy Corey!

Action Bronson • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #347 Sep 29, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

One for not only the hip hop heads but also the cookery crew as Pip gets deep in the rap kitchen with ACTION BRONSON!

There’s no doubt about it, Action has done a ton in the past decade and by the looks of it all, had a goddamn blast while doing it. But he’s always kept a very decent squad around him and stayed on track and focused, as you can tell by his insane output and varied resumé. Here’s a chance to catch up with dude as he talks over the internet to Pip about it all - working out, old skool gaming, pandemic UFC, how he got into rap music and the cassette culture that came along with it, New York, an alternate universe chef career, features with rappers and being in the studio with some of the greatest, eating well, knocking humbleness on the head, acting in a Scorcese film, being behind a show from concept to credits and MAD amounts more in between. Get to know Action Bronson!
