“I cannot act as someone’s time machine…”

Science and gems at every turn this week, from one of the UK’s veterans in the game. In a chat that goes into not just music, expect to hear about this nation of complainers of ours, performing the last show in the UK pre-lockdown, not being able to listen to his old stuff, appreciation of other genres in order to appreciate your own, the body of work of a grime artist, singles vs albums, The Box, growing up and back in the day, salvation through music, rapping in the early days, being a reformed young offender, grime with live bands and performing in general. Tons going on. GO IN!

Fern Brady • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #345 Sep 15, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Please be very welcome to take your seats for a very great chat with Pip and the fantastically funny comic FERN BRADY!

Aceness from the get go, with up-top talk about being heckled in Essex (a tale as old as time), thoughts on the Fringe (Edinburgh, but doevtails nicely with actual hairdresser chat later on), selling out and advertising and what all of that means, judging other artists and comics for selling the wares of themselves or others, the broad discussion of sex work and the many intricacies and flipsides of coins within, journalism and her possible entry into the world (which thankfully switched, going on her experiences in there), accents, her podcast, and MORE including - yes, this comes up like one hour in - lockdown thoughts! Imagine that. How far we have come. ENJOY!

Dizzee Rascal • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #344 Sep 08, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

One of the episodes you’ve either been waiting for a while to align, or one that you didn’t realise you were looking forward to until it dropped - this week Pip is joined by none other than UK rap and grime superstar DIZZEE RASCAL!

Such a great chat with the two, covering all kinds of bases including how he could have been an actor, the lessons learned through pirate radio and the transferrable skills absorbed through the old skool days, being into grunge and rock, the low end theory, going for self, being a proper music nerd and how it sheltered him from a more rocky road, touring with Justin Timberlake, the importance of singalong jams, not being made in to a popstar, making videos AND ALSO some awesome music production insider info for the true heads! Which is great to hear because you don’t always get a glimpse into that side of Dizzee’s world - and it’s important because he’s produced so much of his own music. Anyway - a load for the fans and those not so familiar, so get involved and enjoy!

'E3 AF' is out in October - be alert...

Bozzers • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #343 Sep 03, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Joining Pip for a bonus episode today is the wonderful wrestling fanatic, journalist and Tuesday Night Jaw host BOZZERS!

Absolutely one for the wrestling heads right here - of course you would want to spend hours in Bozzers’ company anyway, no question, but right here this time the focus is on the wide world of wrestling. While the chat goes on to cover other elements of her illustrious life - her anxiety and dealing with it, her journalism background and so on - you can expect to hear about so much to do with wrestling itself, including where it is now, where it was then, and everything in between. Of course, the ‘Speaking Out’ movement is addressed too, which is of course conflicting for all wrestling superfans, but an issue that surely all fans are resolute and unified on. Anyway - without unpacking the whole thing here, just listen and enjoy this ace bonus with Pip and Bozzers!

Himesh Patel • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #342 Sep 01, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A fantastic catch up this week with Pip and star of Yesterday, Eastenders and a HUGE amount more - it’s HIMESH PATEL!

A very nice chat which encompasses everything in Himesh’s inspirational rise to well earned fame and recognition, from those early days in acting school and his relationship with his parents throughout the process, to early gigs and his almost decade long run in Eastenders… Not only that - of course Yesterday comes up, as does Avenue 5, but there’s some ace Chris Nolan-based talk as Himesh stars in 2020’s only(?) blockbuster Tenet! Lovely stuff for your mid-week pick-me-up. Get to know Himesh!

Joe Talbot (Idles) • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #341 Aug 25, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Joining Pip at long last this week is JOE TALBOT of IDLES!

A very in-depth, therapeutic and cathartic chat for you this episode (actually - lemme get this out the way up top - it’s a LITTLE sweary so don’t play in front of the young’uns perhaps), as Pip and Joe get all the way into everything. Of course the mandatory ‘present times’ talk is addressed and lifted at the front, to then reveal the creepy crawlies and seething underbelly of the world and greater universe beneath. But the chat accesses some very important and intriguing places which need addressing, including thanks and blessings, after effects of worldwide trauma, conspiracies (theories and otherwise), the state of the nation and the ripples created, politics through music, personal trauma and exorcising its demons (or working with them), and of course MUSIC! Some great talk about Idles’ new album ‘Ultramono’, and the influences of genres like hip hop on its production (nice talk for the nerds - I speak for myself in that!). GET YOU SOME.

Lou Sanders • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #340 Aug 18, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A long awaited and very welcome guest appearance by dear friend of the Distraction Pieces Network, it’s the very hilarious comedian and podcaster LOU SANDERS!

Powerful goodness here (NOT recorded in a train station but certainly train-facing) from Pip and Lou, which goes into many angles of her awesome career - of which you can expect to hear about past Edinburgh Fringe experiences, her spirituality and being a secret shaman and all that entails, psychic energy and the tapping into of, her Cuddle Club podcast and the origin story of that, the noble art of cuddling (and maybe even doomed art at that…), her on-stage persona and adapting / evolving it, cancel culture and perspectives of time, counselling and trauma and many tangents within. Deep, funny and surprising and MORE words but you can decide on those. Please enjoy the wonderful world of LOU SANDERS!

El-P • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #337 Aug 04, 2020

Show notes

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

Absolute hip hop perfection this episode as Pip has a proper full length chat with rapper/producer/composer - or for brevity’s sake, half of Run The Jewels - El-P!

Whether you’re familiar with El-P from his way back underground (dare I say ‘indie rap’) days of Company Flow alongside Bigg Jus and Mr Len, and of course the label Def Jux (including his sonic architecture of the Cannibal Ox album), or his solo work wearing many hats per album – OR – his present work alongside Killer Mike as 50% of Run The Jewels, you will get a ton out of this. Obviously RTJ talk is discussed, but as a fan, Pip goes in deep for the true heads and gets the background info from El’s days (bad memory not withstanding) hustling the Tower Records mailout system, freestyling on the Stretch & Bobbito show, the Rawkus days, collabos, producing for self and as a team, taking on difficult projects to get out of conventions, “delving into water”, and scoring films (like the forthcoming 'Capone'). Oh and also releasing an eerily prescient 4th RTJ album during a pandemic. If you’re familiar with El-P’s work over the years or have listened to Fantastic Damage more than a few times, you’ll understand that a pandemic is probably the perfect time for an El-related project. He might have been born yesterday sir, but he stayed up all night - it’s El-Producto!
