DT 088: Research the Experience with Tiffany Cruikshank Nov 28, 2019
    Show notes

Tiffany Cruikshank (@tiffanycruikshank) is the founder of Yoga Medicine (@yoga_medicine), a community of teachers focused on fusing anatomy and western medicine with traditional yoga practices to serve the medical communities. She has trained thousands of teachers around the world, graced the cover of over 15 magazines, been featured regularly in major media outlets, authored 2 books, and released over 150 classes on various topics on YogaGlo.com. With a background in Acupuncture and Sports Medicine, Tiffany has worked with celebrities, athletes, and corporate professionals alike in her own private clinics and Nike World Headquarters. Tiffany also founded and continues to run two nonprofits — one conducting research on yoga's therapeutic benefits and the other supporting a shelter for women rescued from trafficking in Delhi, India.

In this episode, you'll hear from Tiffany on:

    • [11.35] Her holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Tiffany explains why she loves combining elements of traditional Chinese medicine with Western treatment modalities in order to create a comprehensive three-dimensional approach to healing which is focused on the individual.
    • [22.36] The evolution of her personal yoga practice from a longstanding rigid Ashtanga routine to a more fluid and adaptable approach. Tiffany's current home practice consists of postures which she instinctively feels she needs, and which vary from day to day.
    • [31.20] Tiffany's creation of Yoga Medicine as a way of sharing her knowledge of Chinese and sports medicine with a wider community of students, teachers, patients and healthcare providers. She reveals how she resolved to create specialized teacher trainings to educate teachers in anatomy, biomechanics and physiology as well as traditional yoga practice.
    • [45.04] The Seva Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing shelter, education and vocational training for women and girls who have been affected by human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The Yoga Medicine community works hard to build awareness of the project and Tiffany aims to raise $150,000 by 2021 to help equip victims of sexual exploitation with the skills they need to lead independent lives.
    • [53.00] Tiffany's advice for teachers. She encourages investment in continued learning and personal growth and stresses that the principal role of the teacher is to be of service and to create a welcoming safe place where students feel listened to and supported.

    • [39.53] The union of body and mind. The role that a strenuous physical practice can play in stilling the mind and preparing it for meditation.

DT 084: You Are Anti-Fragile with Bernie Clark Oct 31, 2019
    Show notes

Bernie Clark has been traveling the yogic path for over 40 years, starting with a daily meditation practice that he established in his mid-twenties, in order to deal with growing stress. In his early forties, he was introduced into the physical practices of Hatha yoga, which assisted him greatly in his meditation practice. Throughout his first career in high-tech business, he continued to feed an intense curiosity about psychology, mythology, anatomy and philosophy. Today, Bernie is a yoga teacher and published author offering classes, teacher trainings, and workshops in Vancouver, Canada.

In this episode, you'll hear from Bernie on:

    • [14.03] The definition of Yin Yoga. Bernie explains that yin and yang are relative terms and that nothing is either completely yin or completely yang. However, more muscular and dynamic forms of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow, are generally considered more yang-like and Yin Yoga is a slower-paced practice where postures are held for a longer period.
    • [19.50] The concept of eustress - a beneficial form of stress which has a positive effect on health. Bernie aims for balance in his Yin Yoga practice and cautions against causing the body distress by pushing it too far or allowing it to weaken and the muscles to atrophy through lack of effective exercise.
    • [22.25] Bernie elaborates on the hypothesis of anti-fragility; the idea that humans gain from chaos and grow stronger under a certain amount of stress. He emphasizes the importance of identifying the edge, the point at which we experience resistance but not pain, in developing a challenging but safe yoga practice.
    • [32.56] Advice for teachers. Bernie recommends resisting commenting on medical conditions and favours a functional rather than an aesthetic approach to asanas, focussing on how students feel rather than how they look in a pose.
    • [48.35] Bernie challenges the commonly held belief that ligaments and tendons should not be stretched. He explains that Yin Yoga works the deeper connective tissues of the body, including ligaments and tendons, and that long-held static stresses can help to strengthen the connective tissues and make them healthier.
