Today to sit down and discuss coaching, commonalities with great athletics coaches, and Bondarchuck and his methods with Derek Evely. After a quick intro we discuss the top athletics coaches he’s been around and where there are commonalities within many of these top minds in the field (Charlie Francis, Dan Pfaff, and Dr. Bondarchuck). One of those similarities is staying out of that “middle ground” and Derek shares with us what that is, where it fits, and why it gets in the way with some aspects of training. He then discusses programming, and where the mistakes people make who are trying to implement Dr. B’s methods with athletes. After a brief intro Antonio jumps right in and breaks down what RFD is, and why it’s important. He next discusses some of the limitations of it as well, and how coaches may be a bit too focused on this one aspect of training, what evaluations he uses with his athletes at different levels, and how those evaluations impact the training programs of his athletes including what correlations he sees with the training programs and actual running speed. My Thoughts Monday #47, Jay DeMayo-Teach The Staff To Serve The Players Sep 03, 2018
    Show notes

“If we are going to provide better for their student athletes, we need to educate them more so they understand what we are doing because if they aren’t the key person in our corner, then the athletes will never buy into what we are doing.”
This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.html
Today’s My Thoughts Monday is based on a discussion I had this week with our coaching staff about the use (or lack there of) of cold water immersion with our student athletes in the non competitive season. I had made the mistake of not communicating the why’s and how’s to what we had planned and why we wanted to limit the use of these modalities.

In today’s edition of The Podcast I get the pleasure of sitting down and discussing FRC with Utah State’s Joey Bergles (@joeybergles on IG). After a quick intro Joey dives right into the meat and potatoes about Functional Range Conditioning. Joey shares with us what it is, how he got into it, and how they’ve gotten their guys to really buy into implementing it regularly. We dive down the rabbit hole of how they evaluate athletes, and how this leads to not just individualization in their programming, but how it drives work for the entire team as a whole. This is a topic that I’ve been very intrigued about for a long time, and I think that this realm of thinking has legs when it comes to helping us improve performance and the durability of our athletes. My Thoughts Monday #46, Jay DeMayo-Sharing Is Caring Aug 27, 2018
    Show notes

“What I care about is you are willing to share and that you’re putting out what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and why you’re moving in the direction you’re moving in with your exercises.”

This weeks My Thoughts Monday is based around the idea of sharing ideas and what we are doing. I was recently contacted by a coach who has been putting some progressions out on social media asking for thoughts on the progressions. This leads to a rant on why we need to share and how we need to get past the idea of people who post things “aren’t real coaches”.

Today’s edition of The Podcast was an IG live talk I had with Vernon Griffith (@vernongriffith4) about how he got started using the dead bugs. He has made this exercise quite in vogue due to how he’s made some sweet modifications to it. Vernon gets into why he implements it, the pros of it, and where he comes up with ideas to advance it as well. After he breaks all that down we get into programing including how he progresses exercises during the session to allow the athletes to continue to learn and drive home the basics to build upon as the workout progresses.

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I dive into my thoughts on the reaction to the latest situation in the strength and conditioning world up at UMD. Of the many things that we have to dive into to correct, I feel like we need to slow down and start with one thing. We need to stop killing athletes.

Ryan Banta discusses coaching with us in this weeks edition of The Podcast. After Ryan gives us a brief overview of his voyage to this point Ryan shares with us how he got to the point of putting together the 5 year project of his book, Sprinter’s Compenduim. Having put together a few books where people contribute to the project has made me second guess quite a bit of what I do, and Ryan shares with us what putting this project together has taught him and changed him as a practitioner. This leads us into a discussion of training, how he looks at the athlete to make decisions as to how to “train” them in a volume sense, along with the roll he sees the weight room playing. Next Ryan shares with us how he separates and evaluates his athletes into groups to progress them in all their training. We finish off talking about the book, who the authors are, and some of the connections he has to them and their impact on the project. Make sure you follow Ryan’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/bantazmo1978 and him on twitter: @SprintersCompen and go pick up your pay of The Sprinters Compendium here: http://store.vervante.com/c/v/V4081803315.html
