Today we are joined by Lee Taft for a fantastic discussion on training movement with athletes. Lee dives right into it giving us his background into how he got into coaching and how he evolved his philosophies and methods of training. This includes how he looks at movements through a biomechanics lens, and idea’s he has “updated” along the way. He also shares with us some issues that he sees with some of the “traditional” methods being used to teach basketball players how to guard their opponents. He then dives down the rabbit hole of “strength”, how the tendons play a role in movement, and how displacement of the pelvis is key. We then touch upon the idea of having a model of what you want movements to look like and how that’s the driving factor behind the general set up for training, and how to modify those models based on different sports, including how the addition of implements in sports changes how they are taught to move.

“If we are going to tell these kids that we need to sleep more, and they need to do better to get to bed more, and they’re not able to get to bed by 9:30 like some of us old farts that are sitting here yelling at them to squat lower and bench heavier, maybe it’s us that need to change to help THEM sleep better?”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss sleep. This time we aren’t talking about it’s importance or strategies to improve it, this time I ask why we don’t follow through with allowing athlete’s to sleep better by making them train so early.

In this edition of My Thoughts Monday I have a bit of a rant about the “mess the field of strength and conditioning is in.” There seems to be some discrepancy as to problems different people are seeing with what we do. I have (oddly) a view of it being more half full glass more than half empty and share why I feel that and ask how we can continue to improve.

Today’s episode of The Podcast is an Instagram Live discussion I had with my good friend Matt Johnson to catch up sense his move from our nations capital out to Indianapolis to work with the Butler Bulldogs. Matt shares with us how the process is going, and the steps he’s taken with his players to progress forward. This starts with him discussing his initial meeting and how they’re “building” what he has planed for the team. He then shares with us his relationship with the coaching staff and how that is driving him to be better for this squad, and how he started to implement his programming with the guys. This includes evaluations and testing, plus the progressions he used with his guys and how it’s impacted them physically and mentally. We answer some questions and answers on programming, culture building, speed work, building the overhead strength required for basketball, accommodating resistance with basketball players, sport specific exercises for basketball, and then end the discussion talking about how we see ourselves in the profession and our roles in (hopefully) bettering it for all the coaches now and coaches of the future.
