Episode 33 True Crime: The Black Widow of Sacramento and the Seal Beach Salon Massacre Aug 20, 2020

Show notes

This was one of the first episodes we recorded, in a celebration of Clare Crawley who was announced as the Bachelorette for 2020… More info on that coming soon.

In case you forgot (I mean, how could you??), Megan and Clare are from Sacramento. So Megan covers the many crimes of Sacramento’s most infamous serial killer, Dorthea Puente, who was charged with 9 counts of murder. This case has a surprise personal twist for Megan! (Story starts at 7:08)

Clare is a hair stylist in California, so Danielle covers the Seal Beach Salon Meritage massacre. The shooting took the lives of 8 people and affected so many more, including the surviving victim (Story starts at 37:55).

Megan also mentioned the movie Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s love letter to Sacramento, that everyone should watch. It’s available on Netflix! Check it out ASAP and send us an email with your thoughts.

Episode 32 True Crime: The Murder of Keri Colleen “KC” Gauf, the Death of Alexander Beletsis and Other Greek Hazing Deaths Aug 13, 2020

Show notes

This week we recapped Jason Mesnick’s season of the Bachelor, and the woman who got his final rose, Melissa Rycroft, was a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Megan covers the story of the 2017 murder of Keri Colleen Gauf by her husband, former Dallas Cowboys player, Anthony McClanahan. Content warning: Domestic violence, intimate partner violence. (Story starts at 21:09)

Since Jason was a member of Theta Chi fraternity at the University of Washington and Chris Harrison sent his son (and TV director) to college, Danielle talks about university hazing. There has been at least one university hazing death every year from 1969 to 2017. Danielle goes down the rabbit hole of hazing and covers the hazing case of Alexander Beletsis from Theta Chi at UC Santa Cruz and several other cases from 2010 to present.
(Story starts at 59:19)

Unrelated to true crime but important, Megan shares the recipe for a “Megatini.” It’s wine (right now Megan prefers rosé), a non-alcoholic seltzer water (grapefruit is really tasty), and lime juice.

Links mentioned in the Episode:
National Domestic Violence Hotline - Megan’s organization of the week! They also have tons of resources and statistics about domestic violence, and resources on how to recognize signs of abuse.
Episode 27 (Isla Vista Shooting Incident)- because Megan had to school Danielle on the differences in the UC/CSU system in California.
HazingPrevention.Org- a national nonprofit dedicated to stopping hazing - lots of tools and resources to prevent hazing

Episode 31: The Bachelor Amazing Women, Drama, & Love (Jason Mesnick GOAT recap) Aug 11, 2020

Show notes

This week we cover the recap of Jason Mesnick’s season! It’s a season full of some amazing women (we love Melissa, Molly, and Stephanie the mostest), love, and some BIG drama. Because this happened a decade ago and news outlets and social media exists, it's no secret that Jason and Molly are married BUT it wasn’t Molly who got Jason’s final rose! Jason’s season really does have it all (except diversity).

Danielle gives the tea! Tea includes: Astrid Loch & Kevin Wendt, Wells Adams, Ari & Lauren Luyendyk, Hannah Ann, Mike Johnson, Jesse Palmer, Marc Bucker & Marisia van Wyk, Ben Zorn, Becca Kufrin & Garrett Yrigoyen, Nick Viall, Vanessa Grimaldi, Jojo Fletcher & Jordan Rodgers.

The POC (People of Color) points of the week was a total of FOUR. DISAPPOINTING. We honestly are not sure if Naomi Crespo is POC so we gave a bonus 3. We also saw Raquel Medeiros, for less than a second, who is from Brazil.

If you’ve got some time and want to watch all of Jason’s season, it’s available on Netflix.

Episode 30: The Murders of Alison Parker and Adam Ward and the Massachusetts Drug Lab Scandal Aug 06, 2020

Show notes

This week’s GOAT episode was all about Ali Fedotowsky! Ali was the 6th Bachelorette, circa 2010. Ali is from Massachusetts (Williamstown, specifically), and after her time as the Bachelorette, she went on to do some news correspondent work.

Megan talks about the murders of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, who seemed like just amazing human beings. Alison, like Ali, was a news correspondent, and Adam was her trusty cameraman. Alison and Adam worked for the WDBJ station outside of Roanoke, Virginia and were unfortunately shot and killed by a man they used to work with, Vester Flanagan II (aka Bryce Williams) in 2015. (Content Warning: suicide) (Story starts at 10:23)

Danielle discusses the Massachusetts Drug Lab Scandal. Two women, Annie Dookhan and Sonja Farak, compromised the entire Massachusetts judicial system with Annie falsifying documents to remain the superstar of the office and Sonja battling a serious drug addiction. Danielle also discusses the ACLU's fight for justice for the over 75,000 convictions. A lot of her information came from "How to Fix a Drug Scandal" which is available on Netflix. (Story starts at 41:38)

Megan shares some true crime news: a development in the appeals case surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing, Robert Durst’s murder trial is postponed, and in light of the murder of Vanessa Guillen, the Army names an independent panel to review Fort Hood’s command and culture. Danielle also shares a quick update from a CR cutie (thanks friend, @ari.elle6) about one of the exonerated M25 Three, Raphael Rowe (related to our Episode 18), who is now an Executive Producer on Netflix’s World’s Toughest Prisons (Season 4).

BONUS EPISODE Interview with Erica Rose from Bachelor Season 9 and the Betty Broderick Story! Jul 30, 2020

Show notes

This week we spoke with Erica Rose, who originally appeared on The Bachelor Season 9 (Lorenzo Borghese’s season set in Rome) and went on to appear in Bachelor Pad Season 2 and Season 3. Erica was, unfortunately, a target in a REALLY messed up game on Bachelor Pad Season 2 called “Target on Your Back”. We discuss the incident and talk about what the show can do to help contestants with their mental health. Then, since Erica is a Crime & Roses Cutie like us, we talk about her family law practice, true crime and some ghosty whosties. Danielle then tells the story of Betty Broderick who had a SUPER messy divorce and then killed her husband and his new wife. (Story starts at 57:56). Megan shares some True Crime News (check it out at 46:43): a member of the Manson Family is up for parole (Leslie Van Houten), a Nazi concentration camp guard was convicted of over 5,200 crimes related to his time at the Stutthof concentration camp, murder charges have been filed in a 34-year-old cold case in Oklahoma, and Derek Chauvin (and his wife) are facing some new charges-- these are unrelated to the death of George Floyd. Just a reminder, Chauvin has been charged with the second-degree murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. You can check out the pod-cert we’re involved in at the Killin’ Missin’ Hidden Podcast here! Episode 29 True Crime: Shared Madness Podcast Crossover. The Atlanta Child Murders and the Disappearance and Murder of Heather McDonald Jul 23, 2020

Show notes

This week we have a special guest on the pod! Madison, the host from Shared Madness Podcast, Madison, joins us to talk about crimes from Atlanta, as Brad Womack is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Danielle covers the history and fun facts about Atlanta.

Madison covers the high profile case of the Atlanta Child Murders of and Wayne Williams. From 1979 to 1981 at least 28 children, adolescents, and adults were killed. Wayne Williams, an Atlanta native, was arrested, tried, and convicted of two of the adult murders and sentenced to two consecutive life terms.

Megan discusses the disappearance and murder of Heather McDonald, just outside of Atlanta in Cartersville, Georgia. This is an unsolved case and Heather’s family and friends deserve some answers. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cartersville Police Department at 770-382-2526 or the GBI’s Calhoun Regional Office at 706-624-1424. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information about the death of Heather McDonald.

Megan also covers some true crime news: a fun story that LaNease Adams gave us about Sharon Tate, we give an update on Ghislane Maxwell, and we talk about the death of Elijah McClain.

Danielle's facts about Atlanta start at 35:54. First story starts at 1:04:45. Second story starts at 1:28:16.

Episode 28 The Bachelor: Brad: Soggy White Bread, The Women: Bachelor Royalty (GOAT Brad Womack X2) Jul 21, 2020

Show notes

This week Bachelor GOAT covered two seasons, by one man, in one night. It was the most boring GOAT we have seen but we promise the recap is a good time! We talk about what we saw on the show, Megan talks about what we didn’t see and connects the dots for us about all the things Chris Harrison left out (on purpose).

Tea includes: Jed Wyatt, Clare Crawley, Jamie from LTYH, Colton and Cassie, Hannah Brown, Blake Hortsmann, Jade and Tanner, Nicole Lovar, Jessica Clark and Matt James and Tyler C!

The POC (People of Color) points of the week were a BIG FAT ZERO ... we are so pissed.

Episode 27 True Crime: The Murder of Abby Vandiver and the 2014 Isla Vista Killings Jul 16, 2020

Show notes

This week there was not a Bachelor GOAT episode but we still have a true crime Bachelor related episode for you!

Danielle talks about the continued trauma that LaNease Adams and other Bachelor POC contestants have faced after being on the show. She connects her story with the constant victimization the loved ones of Abby Vandiver’s family suffered when her young life was tragically and viciously taken too soon in Dunwoody, Georgia.

Megan talks about a super difficult case, the 2014 Isla Vista shootings, committed by Elliott Rodger, a self-identified Incel. This creep killed 6 people, and injured another 14. Megan walks through what “Incel” means, and talks about some related Incel incidents of violence and how it’s related to some of the toxic masculinity we see on the Bachelor franchise *cough* Chad Johnson *cough*. (Content Warnings on this one: severe violence against women, mass shooting, and toxic masculinity.)

Megan also covers some true crime news: the disappearance of Naya Rivera, the execution of a Texas inmate, arrests made in the death of rapper Pop Smoke, and Donald Trump commuting the sentence of his long time friend and political adviser, Roger Stone.

First story starts at 14:10. Second story starts at 54:11.
