Episode 66 True Crime: The Murder of Faith Hedgepeth and the Story of the Most Hated Woman in America Jan 14, 2021

Show notes

This week we cover stories based on Matt James’ premiere episode!

Bachelor Matt James is originally from North Carolina, so Megan covers the story of the unsolved murder of Faith Hedgepeth. Faith was an Indigenous college student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. We also talk about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis that both the United States and Canada are currently facing. This case is unsolved, there is a $40,000 reward available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Faith Hedgepeth. If you have information about this case, call the Chapel Hill Police Department (919) 969-2001, or the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, (800) 334-3000. (Story starts at 14:27).

During the premiere of The Bachelor, we saw Matt James lead his opening speech to the women with a prayer. Bachelor Nation had mixed feelings about the forced religious participation.

This week we cover a case that starts with a prayer and ends with murder. Madalyn Murray O'hair is known as the most hated woman in America after she sued Baltimore Public Schools for forcing her son to recite the Lord’s Prayer in school. Madalyn went on to form the Atheists of America, gaining fame and money, money that someone else wanted to take from her and her family. (Story starts at 51:05).

We also address the acts of domestic terrorism taken out on the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.

Celia a Slave v. Missouri January 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive Jan 02, 2021

Show notes

This is a sneak peek of our January 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive content.

You can hear the full episode starting at the $3 level of our Patreon page, link here.

This episode we have our MOST favorite guests of all time on the pod … our moms! Danielle’s mom prefers stories from the way back machine, so that’s exactly what we did! Our moms also don’t like it when we swear (same for the person who left us a 1 star review on Apple) so this will be our first curse-free episode!

Celia was a slave that was sold to Robert Newsom when she was 14 years old. The day she returned to the property, was the first day she was sexually assaulted by the slave owner. For years she endured the abuse until one day she fought back. Celia was then put on trial for killing Mr. Newsom. The trial started the conversation of how slaves were only considered property until they were criminals and then could be found guilty of breaking the law. Content Warning: Slavery, Discussion of Lynching, and Sexual Assault.

Megan tells the story of Tillie and the Joes: Tillie Klimek was a woman in Chicago, who frequently had dreams and premonitions about people getting sick and dying. She was pretty accurate too! Except, she may be more murderer than psychic. She is known today as Chicago’s most prolific female serial killer.

Abi also bases her true crime / paranormal story on Zac Clark! Abi discusses the Amityville house and murders of Ronald DeFeo Sr., his wife Louise, and their children Dawn, Allison, Marc, and John in Amityville, New York. This family annihilator story became the center of movies and books for decades. (Story starts at 39:30).

Episode 60 True Crime: The Murder of Christopher Ross and The Life, Legacy, and Murder of Elvira Manahan Dec 21, 2020

Show notes

Megan is STILL so upset about the fact that Riley did not receive a rose, so she based her story on him for the week! Riley is an attorney in New York, who went to law school at Syracuse University. Megan found a story from the Syracuse area of a murder that did not have to happen. Like Riley, Christopher Ross, the victim in this case, was a big sports fan and seemed like a really cool guy who unfortunately was taken far too soon. (Story starts at: 1:39) This week we also saw “hometown” dates and got to know Ivan Hall’s family even more! I know what you are thinking, is Crime and Roses an Ivan Hall stan account? The answer is … YES! Ivan has talked about being biracial with Tayshia; his dad is black and his mother is Filipino. Danielle covers the high profile murder of the Filipino socialite, Elvira Manahan, who shaped fashion and television in the Philippines.
