Desire: Women Claim Sexual Sovereignty After Sexual Trauma

In a society that benefits from your self-doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act.
    Hamash Alidina

Dr. Saida Désilets - A thought-leader and speaker on the growing edge of researching ways women can use their minds, bodies, and spirits to create richer lives through their sensual selves - even after sexual trauma. Saida serves as a guide to women who believe in transformation as a lifelong path of learning, discovery and walk to freedom.

But it was a violent rape, sexual trauma, that nearly cost Dr. Désilets the life that put her on this Path.

    She's Strong On Straight Talk

Self-described as a “street-savvy, equipped with feisty farm-girl strength and the grace of a dancer,” she was by no means naïve. In fact, this French Canadian native was raised on a First Nation’s reservation in Manitoba where sexual abuse of children, teens, and young women was common. Yet, despite seeing that openly, she never expected to be so violently attacked by a man she was actually dating. The shocking violation left her in such excruciating physical and emotional pain and damage that, upon waking up after emergency surgery, she was told she had only two weeks to live.

But live she did! “I chose to defy the surgeon’s diagnosis, and instead, chose to live. Life after the rape, after near-death, takes on a different quality,“ she says.” Either you become a shut-down, just-getting-by version of yourself or you suddenly feel like you’ve been given a new ticket on life. I felt the latter. My journey started in defiance. I defied death. I defied the badge of a victim. And I claimed myself in ways I never knew possible.”

Tune in - she spares no punches.

    Her Unexpected Tragedy

Yet, despite seeing these open transgressions, she never expected to be so violently attacked by a man she was actually dating. The shocking violation left her in such excruciating physical and emotional pain and damage that, upon waking up after emergency surgery, she was told she had only two weeks to live.

Consider this - you don't have to experience rape, sexual trauma, or specific disrespect to learn from Dr. Désilets. This very interesting interview addresses the evolution of women thinking about their own strengths and more private issues with sexuality - their own sexual reawakening.

    266 Boredom As A Marker For Action – Copper Oct 23, 2018
    Show notes

Boredom As An Important Marker For Action

Paradoxically, without self-control you can't be free.
    - Russell A Barkley

Measure Brain Function To Improve Outcomes - Boredom Matters

Jeff Copper is an ADHD Coach and national thought leader. He likes to measure. Here he measures, yes, boredom. It looks like it's obvious, but Jeff takes this discussion to a different level.

Jeff is, quite simply, a man for all seasons, as he reflects, reports, and recommends on the remarkable changes in ADHD mind science. His international reputation for asking important questions, for providing an interesting forum to discuss the vagaries of ADD/ADHD diagnosis and treatment, is nothing less than exemplary - especially in these halcyon years of ADHD medication confusion, distrust, and pervasive medical quandary.

It's dicey out there, and Jeff sets out to correct the guessing game with details that work.

Photo by Maxim Smith on Unsplash

Straight Talk: Thinking About Boredom & Function

If the targets and treatments remain imprecise who can blame the public for a pervasive lack of confidence in the ADHD treatment system? The good news, label guesswork is out [hyperactive vs inattentive?], and detailed, functional measurement, both brain, and biomedical is now more decidedly, irrevocably in.

No, I'm not diving into the deep waters of controversy over functional vs traditional medicine. The function I'm addressing here at CBJ is at once complex and simple: brain function and biomedical function from a comprehensive medical perspective are increasingly translatable, understandable, and applicable down at the street level.

My perspective remains the same: Comprehensive perceptions are inclusive, not polarized in either of the warring medical camps and are in the best interest of the most advanced, most precise, most predictable patient care. Let's get past binary thinking - it's boring.

The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.
    ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson

    Jeff's Outstanding Contribution

In just a few short years Jeff has interviewed almost everyone in the ADHD community from thought leaders such as Hallowell and Barkley to the living experiences of coaches and clients. He connects researchers with Main Street experiences, always chasing data that works in the real world. We're on the same Path.

Ed Note: On My Good Times With Jeff

At first, Jeff and I simply bumped into each other at various meetings, from CHADD to the National ADHD Coaches Organization. I still remember very well how much we both appreciated Dr. Russell Barkley's remarks years ago when Russ added Executive Function insights to the previous appearance-based diagnostic criteria still used as the standard of care today.

We all know that 'Hyperactive,' 'Inattentive,' and 'Combined,' simply don't cover the complexity of executive function challenges. Barkley's insights offer more precise answers - improved target recognition. If both patient and medical teams truly understand and recognize the targets, the dialogue in global offices will improve markedly - simply because the patient can say, "Yes you hit it," or, "Not yet." [Functional diagnostic targets explained in 8 detailed Videos in my Executive Function playlist on YouTube: http://www.corepsych.com/diagnosis]

    It Takes a Team

Shortly after that first meeting we both quickly realized that we do sing from the same hymnal. It's not inconsequential that we have, in a way, grown up together. I truly admire Jeff and his work and appreciate this opportunity to again tease apart some of his ideas here at CBJ on this my second interview with him [CBJ/017]. [Also see this Jeff Copper video playlist for the times when Jeff' has interviewed me.]

Jeff is well beyond Byzantine speculations and often dives deeply into evidence and data for more precise thinking and more precise, data-driven solutions. That's what this Episode is about - the challenge of boredom - and how to make it pay for itself.

    Why Measure Brain Function?

    - Because appearances don't cover the complexities of disorganized thinking. From the very outset of fresh Executive Function insights, it became clear that too many repeatedly treat the standard - appearances - rather than clinically measure the thinking process itself.

Jeff's many video interviews have set a Critical Thinking standard for all who hope to contribute to the growing awareness of essential neurophysiology variables.

    Parent Alert! ADHD Parenting Evolves

Dr. Sharon Saline, Northampton, MA, Sharon Saline, a clinical psychologist and author What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life, specializes in working with kids, young adults and families living with ADHD, learning disabilities and other mental health issues. The upshot of her work is the instructive guide for ADHD Parenting.

Her unique perspective - as a sibling in an ADHD home, combined with decades of experience as a clinical psychologist and educator/clinician consultant - assists her in guiding families and adults towards effective communication and closer connections. She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as understanding ADHD, executive functioning, different kinds of learners and the teen brain.

How: Dr. Saline's Helpful Advice To Reconsider ADHD Parenting - The 5 C's

Based on dozens of interviews from kids and families as well as clinical examples, this book shares the voices of kids with ADHD themselves and provides a parenting model that emphasizes practical approaches to everyday challenges and helps parents of all kids, not just those with ADHD.

My approach for ADHD Parenting progress is called The 5C's of ADHD Parenting - it relies on:

    • Self-Control,
    • Compassion,
    • Collaboration,
    • Consistency, and
    • Celebration

    Why

These daily practices reduce the frustration that most families living with the ADHD parenting experience. Kids with ADHD want to be included in discussions of plans aimed at helping them.

When they don't feel heard or considered, they lack buy-in and cooperation. They need direct instruction to improve executive functioning challenges and usually can identify areas where they need help.

Kids with ADHD want to be noticed for their efforts, not just their failures. They hear so much criticism that they don't believe feedback can be positive. It's often hard for them to get motivated or like themselves in light of the amount of negativity they receive.

260 Gut Candida Changes Your Mind – Gatza Oct 02, 2018
    Show notes

    Gut Candida Changes Your Mind

Dr. Julie Gatza is one of the nation's top chiropractic physicians with more than 20 years of clinical practice. In this CBJ interview, we discuss sugar cravings and Gut Candida diagnosis and treatments.

A highly popular speaker, she has designed and presented hundreds of wellness workshops for both patients and practitioners wherein she's addressed a wide range of health issues with a focus on the role that digestion plays in maintaining a healthy immune system.

She is currently heard on radio programs around the country in her capacity as National Spokesperson for Nature's Sources, LLC, manufacturers of plant-based AbsorbAid Digestive Enzymes and distributors of Kolorex Candida Care herbal supplements.

Helpful Advice To Starve Gut Candida

"If you can manage to regulate your blood sugar levels throughout the day, you will take a big step towards beating your sugar addiction. That's because every spike in blood sugar creates a crash. Eating huge meals is one thing that can undoubtedly spike your blood sugar, and it is equally sure to result in sugar cravings shortly afterward.

By sticking to small portions, you can prevent those cravings from happening. It's better to eat five small meals each day than three large ones. Use stevia in place of sugar."

    Data Demonstrates:

IgG antibodies to Candida may be due to past infections and therefore may not indicate a current infection. However, Candida antibodies may trigger autoimmune disease. Candida antibodies react with virtually all human organs, including the brain.

In one study, individuals with pituitary malfunction had Candida antibodies that also reacted to a human pituitary protein. Candida antibodies are elevated in Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and cancer. Individuals with cancer and elevated IgG antibodies to Candida died on average one year sooner than individuals with the same type of cancer and normal amounts of IgG antibodies to Candida.

A wide range of disorders have been linked to Candida including depression, chronic fatigue, thyroid disorders, autism, multiple sclerosis, vulvodynia. Use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, chemotherapy, and anti-inflammatory steroids greatly increase susceptibility to Candida. Overgrowth of Candida may also cause a rise in cases of food allergies, as we see demonstrated every day in our offices.
