    Show notes

War, PTSD, and Recovery - First Person Accounting From Childhood

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.
    ~ Ernest Hemingway

Lily Violet, [a pen name], is the 30-year-old author of the book, Cinnia's Story, based on her own life story of overcoming PTSD from a war zone childhood. She is a professional chef with over 15 years of experience, but most exciting for her, she is a mother to a beautiful baby boy. Lily was born in a small Eastern European country but immigrated to Australia in her early 20s and that abiding past war trauma forces her to keep anonymity intact.

A Refugee Reports Specific PTSD Challenges

From a very young age, she found herself trapped in a war zone, living day to day in fear for her own life and the lives of her family. Unfortunately, the war not only took away her childhood but the life of her grandfather, as well. Years of trauma created a serious PTSD, traumatic life experience.

Lily has experienced repeated life struggles, including surviving two wars, being bullied through high school and in the workplace, suffering numerous health issues, to being a victim of domestic abuse. But these tragedies have only made her stronger.

Lily currently resides in Sydney with her husband and enjoys spending all of her time with their new baby boy. Becoming a mother is one of the greatest gifts in her life and her greatest accomplishment. She comes to our CBJ group with remarkable experiences from a catastrophic life, to report on trauma and recovery.

    169 Narcissism Survival Guide – Behary Nov 16, 2017
    Show notes

Narcissism Survival Requires Advanced Self Management

In or Out of the Relationship

He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals.
    ~ Benjamin Franklin

Wendy Behary, LCSW has co-authored several chapters and articles on Schema Therapy and Cognitive Therapy for narcissism. She is the author of Disarming the Narcissist…Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed (New Harbinger Publications—2008 & 2013) - now translated into 10 languages.

Wendy specializes in treating narcissists and the people who live with and deal with them. As an author and an expert on the subject of narcissism, she is a contributing chapter author of several chapters on Schema Therapy for Narcissism (Wiley and APA Press, 2011, 2012, 2013).

She lectures both nationally and internationally to professional and general audiences on the subject of Schema Therapy, and the subject of narcissism, relationships, and dealing with difficult people. Her consultation work with organizations includes speaking engagements focused on interpersonal conflict resolution.

    Personal Note

    • In this CBJ review of narcissism, Wendy makes clear the paradox - how distant and alone they are, and how their low self-esteem excuses every move because they are, beneath all the posturing and posing, so fragile. They rationalize that empty, painful reality - thinking they do deserve special treatment. That demanding painful fragility can become seductive and draw others in to fix them - which they use and don't give back.
    • You know people like this - in and outside of the office. We all do. These maladaptive patterns of disrespectful narcissism provide global news every day.

    167 Science & Contrarian Thinking Beyond Dogma – Virol Nov 09, 2017
    Show notes

Extraordinary Means Just That - Beyond The Ordinary

Contrarian: A person who takes up a contrary position, especially a position opposed to the majority view, regardless of how unpopular it is.
    - Webster's Dictionary

    Thinking Perspectives: Constructive Contrarian Insights

Ozan Virolis a rocket scientist turned author, award-winning law professor, and inventive rethinker. At heart, he's an avowed and exceedingly interesting contrarian. Through his articles and interviews, he shows how extraordinary thinking produces extraordinary results, whether at work or at the next dinner party. He helps us reconsider the underlying opportunities in these times of neuroscience discovery, our Galileo Mind Moment.

    • And don't misunderstand the potentially negative implications of his identity as a 'contrarian!' You'll understand why when you listen in.

Note: Consider his team: thousands who are members of his exclusive email list span multiple industries. They’re New York Times bestselling authors, lawyers, musicians, corporate executives, doctors, and constitutional court judges. But above all, they’re pioneers and rebels. They have a passion for redefining the status quo and challenging deeply held views about how the world works. They know that they can’t get ahead if they simply follow what others are doing. Data and experience speak out.

    Personal Note:

I think what's always important is not to be contrarian for its own sake but to really get at the truth.
    Peter Thiel
    • A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Ozan grew up in a family of no English speakers. He learned English as a second language and moved to the United States by himself at 17 to attend Cornell University and major in planetary science, his childhood dream.
    • While there, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers–Spirit and Opportunity–to Mars. He built stuff that went to the red planet and wrote code that snaps photos of the Martian surface.
    • Then, he walked away from it all and became a law professor to influence others to make interplanetary leaps on this planet. He graduated first in his class from law school, earning the highest grade point average in his law school’s history since the introduction of the 4-point grading scale. Listen up, you will enjoy his razor-sharp mind.
    • You can learn more about his journey in an article about Dr. Varol that was published in TIME.

    Currently

    • He’s currently a professor at Lewis & Clark Law School in beautiful Portland, Oregon.
    • He has written numerous award-winning articles that are taught in colleges and graduate schools.
    • His academic work has focused on challenging conventional wisdom on constitutional design and democratic revolutions. Society and politics, self-management and constructive boundary management is his current focus.
    • He has been featured in various domestic and foreign media, including BBC, TIME, CNN, Washington Post, Slate, and Foreign Policy.
    • He has advised the U.S. Department of Defense, given lectures at foreign constitutional courts, and presented at businesses, non-profits, and government institutions, including the U.S. Department of State.

166 EMDR Provides Researched Options – PTSD, DID – Lobenstine Nov 07, 2017
    Show notes

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Unlike other forms of psychological disorders, the core issue in trauma is reality.
    - Bessel A. van der Kolk - The Body Keeps Score

    Unlocking The Past With EMDR

Farnsworth Lobenstine is a clinical social worker living in Amherst, MA. He's an Approved Consultant for the EMDR International Association. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is one of 3 therapies approved internationally for the treatment of PTSD - to embrace events, to master them, from the dark halls of the past. Because it treats the body-mind, and not just the thinking-brain [the part that is the primary focus/objective for talk therapy], it has also proven to be very useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and many other psychological disorders.

EMDR has proven to be an effective treatment for complex trauma and dissociative identity disorder when appropriately modified. He trained in EMDR in 1999 and served on the National Faculty of the EMDR Institute since 2001. This interview is quite compelling and adds considerably to options for resolving past trauma. He's experienced, intelligent and reasonably opinionated - an excellent mix! Don't miss Farnsworth - love that name!

Personal Ed. Note: The use of EMDR treatments remain so frequently overlooked. Although I don't provide EMDR myself as a therapist, I've worked with numerous well trained EMDR practitioners and certified EMDR trainers since 2003, and find it remarkably, indeed pervasively useful in everyday psychotherapy practice. This 166 CBJ Episode doesn't entirely cover the fact that this technique works for adolescents as well - more on that specific age range coming later.

Also, at this time in 166 CBJ Episodes, Farnsworth is the first practitioner/trainer who specifically discusses this proven, useful EMDR process for our listeners. And he won't be the last. We do have much more to learn about the EMDR How. Stay tuned; we've just scratched the surface on this interesting, utilitarian topic.

    165 Dissociative Identity Disorder – Update – Searle Nov 02, 2017
    Show notes

Lost & Found: Dissociative Identity Disorder Solutions

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
    - Marcel Proust

Details for Treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder

Beverly Searle – Discusses nuances of healing Dissociative Identity Disorder [DID], Anorexia, PTSD, and Depression. At the moment Beverly is finishing an evidence-based research project with a Ph.D. student investigating the use of herpersonalized recovery process on people who had experienced trauma at work. Preliminary results show there was up to an 80% improvement in 10 hours of therapy. She is an independent researcher in the trauma/adversity landscape and is focused on thousands who have had negative, traumatic life experiences. This is the second time for Beverly here at CBJ & focuses on her considerable experience with DID.

    Personal Note From Beverly

"Everything about the recovery process that I teach in my practice was first accomplished addressing my own past conflicts - the embryonic theory I did in my own head! I adjusted each step, tuned and adjusted again until the step worked! I have family and friends who let me try this approach out on them who suffered from anxiety and PTSD issues. Weren’t they wonderful to do this?

Then I added another part or step and started all over again with the testing, and adjusting. My friends also gave me suggestions which I then tried out and if they worked (again in my own head) I would add this my recovery plan until it became a complete formula, an 8 step process, 4 which can be done as a Self Help process and 5-8 with a counselor/therapist.

    Her Practice

My practice can find application in a variety of challenges including PTSD, Anorexia, and Dissociative Identity Disorder. My first client who was suffering from anorexia for over 15 years was able to alleviate within 3 months and has never looked back since then. Download the free report on my website, and you can read her testimonial."

    DID - Dissociative Identity Disorder

Most relevant for this CBJ/165 Episode: these steps also apply to Dissociative Identity Disorder.

163 Brain Regeneration Stroke TBI Cerebral Palsy – Steenblock Oct 26, 2017
    Show notes

    Brain Regeneration Targets The Untreatable

Most of the mistakes in thinking are inadequacies of perception rather than mistakes of logic.
    - Edward de Bono

Brain Regeneration Insights Make A Significant Difference For Treatment Failure

David A. Steenblock, MS, DO, was born in Iowa in 1943, has been practicing medicine for over forty years and is currently medical director of David A. Steenblock, D.O., Inc. [A Personalized Brain Regeneration Medicine Clinic] - and is President of Steenblock Research Institute, Inc. a 501(3)c non-profit. He's a delightful guest, with a warm sense of humor and a deep understanding of remarkable new tools for brain regeneration.

Beginning in 1989 Dr. Steenblock was one of the first practicing physicians to employ hyperbaric oxygen therapy [HBOT] to treat stroke and was one of the first to use HBOT to treat an acute stroke case (which produced a remarkable clinical response and turnaround).

    Stem Cell Research

In 2002, he started working closely with highly credentialed physicians in Mexico who treated patients with pure cord blood stem cells in conjunction with protocols he developed. Then, in 2004 he helped spearhead a pilot study involving eight children with cerebral palsy treated (in Mexico) with cord blood stem cells [PDF Article], which demonstrated both safety and efficacy, and in 2006 co-authored one of the first lay-level books on umbilical cord stem cell therapy ever published titled Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Therapy: The Gift of Healing from Healthy Newborns.

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate for Brain Regeneration

Then, starting in 2005, Dr. Steenblock pioneered the harvesting and infusion of stem cell-rich bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) along with FDA approved pharmaceutical stem cell activators to successfully treat a wide range of chronic medical conditions and diseases including many neurological diseases and conditions. During the 1990’s Dr. Steenblock began specializing in the repair and regeneration of damaged brain tissues in people with chronic stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebral palsy, and autism by the use of daily hyperbaric oxygen treatments.

Dr. Steenblock believes he has determined the principle underlying players in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's, MS and Alzheimer's. All of these conditions appear to be due, at least in part, to the chronic overgrowth of toxic microorganisms in the small bowel especially the ileum - which is adjacent to the appendix. This topic can be found on YouTube videos below by Dr. Steenblock, along with many patient testimonials.

Interestingly, Dr. Steenblock's own daughter suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome and was given stem cells by her father and enjoyed many benefits.
