    TV & Movie Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man (2012) Oct 15, 2021
    Show notes

Chris and Dave are back and it's time to challenge whether Chris' adamance that Andrew Garfield is the best Spider-Man is well-founded!

    Plot Synopsis:

Peter Parker (Garfield) is an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Star Wars: Spoiler-Free Book Review – Into The Dark by Claudia Gray - The High Republic Era (Phase 1, Wave 1) Oct 02, 2021
    Show notes

This week Mike is doing another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era; Into The Dark by Claudia Gray! Although the book is a “young adult” novel, it’s still an excellent read for teenagers & adults alike and is part of the first wave of the first phase of High Republic content, focusing primarily on padawan Reath Silas & the drengir!

In more detail, for the first half of the episode, Mike gives a bit of information on the other releases for The High Republic (the first two waves within Phase 1) and then delves into his spoiler-free review; primarily providing information from the blurb and within the first few pages; talking about the book’s themes, what he enjoyed about it and how it impacts the rest of The High Republic.

In the second half, Mike provides more details on the characters within the story and gives examples on how the book’s themes work with the story being told and how it fits in with other High Republic material, which falls into light-spoiler territory. He gives plenty of warning before delving into his more detailed review, so you can listen to as little or as much info about Into The Dark before picking it up yourself – Mike ends the review with a general overview of the other High Republic books (released & soon to be released) and talking about where they fit chronologically with the comics & other High Republic content.

Into The Dark was released February 2nd 2021 by Claudia Gray. She has also written the young adult novels Lost Stars and Leia: Princess Of Alderaan, as well as the “adult” novels Master & Apprentice and Bloodline. She has also recently announced The Fallen Star; the third “adult” book in The High Republic era.

Into The Dark is from Phase 1, Wave 1 of The High Republic, also in Wave 1 is Light Of The Jedi and A Test Of Courage. Phase 1, Wave 2 includes The Rising Storm, Out Of The Shadows and Race To Crashpoint Tower and Wave 3 (due early 2022) will include Claudia Gray’s “adult” novel The Fallen Star plus junior-novel Mission To Disaster and young-adult novel Midnight Horizon.

Mike also interviewed Claudia Gray on December 12th 2020 on this very feed, so make sure you check that out if you haven’t already!

Other High Republic content currently available includes; Light Of The Jedi – an “adult” novel by Charles Soule, A Test Of Courage – a junior novel by Justina Ireland, The High Republic comics by Cavan Scott and High Republic Adventures comics by Daniel José Older, plus Cavan Scott’s sequel novel to Light Of The Jedi, named The Rising Storm is available now along with Out Of The Shadows by Justina Ireland, Race To Crashpoint Tower by Daniel José Older and the audio drama; Tempest Runner, also by Cavan Scott.

TV & Movie Reviews: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) Sep 16, 2021
    Show notes

Chris and Dave are back and it's the latest MCU entry, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

    Plot

Thousands of years ago, Xu Wenwu finds the Ten Rings, ten mystical weapons that grant their user immortality and great power. Wenwu amasses an army of warriors called the Ten Rings and conquers many kingdoms and topples governments throughout history.

In 1996, Wenwu begins searching for the village of Ta Lo, which is said to harbor various mythical beasts, in order to expand his power. He finds the entrance of the village, but is stopped from entering by the village's guardian, Ying Li. The two fall in love and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. Wenwu abandons the ten rings and his organization to be with his family. However, Li is eventually murdered by the Iron Gang, old rivals of the Ten Rings, and Wenwu once again takes up the ten rings to massacre them and resume his criminal activities. Shang-Chi begins training in martial arts and is sent by Wenwu at the age of 14 to assassinate the leader of the Iron Gang. After fulfilling his mission, a traumatized Shang-Chi escapes to San Francisco, where he adopts the name "Shaun".

In the present day, Shang-Chi works as a valet with his best friend Katy. While on the bus on their way to work, Shang-Chi and Katy are attacked by the Ten Rings led by Razor Fist. Shang-Chi fights them off, but discovers that his pendant given to him by his mother has been taken. Fearing that the Ten Rings will attack Xialing for her pendant, Shang-Chi decides to track her down and reveals his past to Katy, who agrees to help him.

They find her at an underground fight club in Macau, which she owns; Xialing expresses her resentment toward Shang-Chi and their father. The fight club is then attacked by the Ten Rings, with Wenwu unexpectedly arriving to capture Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing.

They are taken to the Ten Rings' compound, where Wenwu reveals that he believes Li is still alive and is being kept in Ta Lo, using the two pendants to create a map that can be used to enter the village. Wenwu plans to destroy the village after freeing his wife and imprisons his children and Katy when they object. The three escape the compound with the help of former actor Trevor Slattery, whom the Ten Rings imprisoned for impersonating Wenwu.

Guided by Slattery's hundun companion Morris, the group drives to Ta Lo to warn the village of the Ten Rings and meet Li's sister Ying Nan. She reveals to the group the history of Ta Lo: thousands of years ago, it was attacked by the soul-consuming Dweller-in-Darkness and his minions. However, the village was saved by a dragon called the Great Protector, who helped seal the Dweller and his minions in a mountain. According to Nan, the Dweller-in-Darkness has been influencing Wenwu into believing Li is still alive so he will use the rings to break the seal. The villagers, Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Katy train and prepare for their arrival.

Shang-Chi and Katy return to San Francisco, where they are summoned by the sorcerer Wong to accompany him to the Sanctum Sanctorum. In a mid-credits scene, Shang-Chi speaks with Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers, and discover that the ten rings are emitting a mysterious signal. In a post-credits scene, Xialing becomes the new leader of the Ten Rings.
