This week on Comes A Time co-founder of voter registration organization Headcount, Andy Bernstein, joins Oteil and Mike to catch up on Headcount's banner year leading up to the 2022 midterm elections. Andy discusses their mission to get “everyone politically engaged,” and why it’s critically important to listen to one another, especially if you have an opposing point of view.

HeadCount is a non-partisan organization that uses the power of music to register voters and promote participation in democracy. They reach young people and music fans where they already are – at concerts and online – to inform and empower. Headcount stages nonpartisan voter registration drives at more than 1,000 live events each year and collaborates with cultural leaders to promote civic engagement on a national scale. Since 2004, they've signed up over 1,000,000 voters through their work with touring musicians like Ariana Grande, Dead & Company, and Beyoncé.

    Anthony Coscia Oct 14, 2022
    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time the creator of the mini Wall of Sound, Anthony Coscia, joins the guys to discuss his origin story of how he hopped on “the bus,” his career of building guitars and speaker cabinets, and how the Grateful Dead approached the fine details of sound. Anthony gives the guys a fascinating in-depth rundown on how the Wall of Sound worked, and provides unique and unknown insights on how the Dead pulled off touring with the biggest PA system ever.

Anthony Coscia is a luthier and amp builder who specializes in equipment that was used by the Grateful Dead. Anthony recently completed the ultimate labor of love: a working, 1/6 model replica of the Grateful Dead’s Wall of Sound. All told, Coscia spent over 200 hours building cabinets, individually soldering and installing 390 tiny speakers (some meant for cell phones), and even creating a lighting rig for his miniature take on the Dead’s 1974 stage setup.

    Robert Walter Aug 26, 2022
    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time, Oteil and Mike are joined by keyboard wizard, Robert Walter! Robert joins the guys from his tour with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd to talk about what it’s like being on the road with one of his all-time favorite musicians, the process of re-releasing The Greyboy Allstars 1997 classic album A Town Called Earth, and his early days as a musician in the San Diego punk scene. Robert also dives deep on his broad array of musical influences, why great musicians aren’t pretentious, and the difference between responding to what you hear and forcing your intention in improvisation.

A founding member of the seminal groove band The Greyboy Allstars, organ, keyboard, and synth sharp-shooter Robert Walter splits his time between his own 20th Congress, The Greyboy Allstars, and a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles. The Greyboy Allstars became a long term project for Walter with a string of critically acclaimed albums and world tours, and the band quickly became home to some of the most revered players on the modern music scene.

To flex his desire to compose in a way that was just outside of Greyboy's wheelhouse, Walter formed 20th Congress and recorded and toured heavily through the late '90s and '00s. A brilliant improviser with a gift for riveting hooks and unstoppable grooves, Walter set out to create songs that blur the line between the composed and the spontaneous.
