    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time Mike and Oteil sit down with a hippie icon and a legend of the counterculture movement- the one and only Wavy Gravy! You’ll hear Wavy tell the guys about his friendship with Bob Dylan when they lived atop the Gaslight Cafe in New York City, opening for John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, and taking walks with Albert Einstein. The guys also discuss Wavy’s Seva Foundation which helps develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight for the blind, the early days of the Grateful Dead, and Wavy’s circus and arts summer camp, Camp Winnarainbow.

Wavy Gravy is an American entertainer and peace activist best known for his role at Woodstock, as well as for his contributions to the counterculture movement in the 1960s. But these accolades barely scratch the surface in telling the whole story about the positive impact that he’s had on the planet. Along with Jahanara, his wife of over fifty years, Wavy has brought joy and helped to relieve suffering for countless people around the globe, largely through his favorite projects- the Seva Foundation and Camp Winnarainbow. Wavy has been called “clown prince of the counterculture” by Entertainment Weekly, “a saint in a clown suit” by Bob Weir, and “the illegitimate son of Harpo Marx and Mother Teresa” by Paul Krassner. Tune in to hear all about the wondrous life and creative activism of Wavy Gravy!

Brando Rich (CashorTrade) May 27, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of Comes A Time Oteil and Mike welcome Brando Rich, founder and CEO of CashorTrade, onto the show. You’ll hear the guys discuss the origin of CashorTrade and the principle ideas behind the service, how the company has maintained the feel of a close-knit community as they’ve grown larger, and the war between artists and fans and big ticketing companies. You’ll also hear Brando tell the guys a few stories about the unique ways that CashorTrade connects old and new friends, explain how the ticket market functions as a whole and tell you why tickets have gotten so expensive, and talk about the future of paperless tickets.

Brando Rich is an avid music fan who grew upset with the secondary ticket market. To counter this exploitation of fans, he created CashorTrade.org, the world's only social network where real fans buy, sell, and trade tickets for face value and avoid scalpers. Now with nearly 250,000 members on the app and 3,000 new fans signing up each month, CashorTrade has become an ideal alternative in the industry. They’ve solidified exciting partnerships to take part in their Face Value Manifesto, including agreements with Billy Strings and Twiddle. Summer Camp Music Festival, Candler Park, Disc Jam, and the Werkout Music Festival are some of the festivals on board as well.

    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time Mike and Oteil are joined by the hosts of the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast, Jesse Jarnow and Rich Mahan, for a riveting hour of conversation on why the Dead were so good at channeling emotion through music, how Jesse and Rich create a Grateful Dead time machine through their podcast, and just how abnormal a Dead show was in comparison to any other rock concert. They also discuss the acutely particular circumstances that allowed the Dead to have the level of success that they did, a funny story about Jerry thinking that European deadheads are the same as American deadheads only with accents, why Jesse avoids ranking their music, and what might have been fueling the wild and exploratory versions of “Dark Star” during the Europe ‘72 tour.

“The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast” is the official podcast of the Grateful Dead hosted by Jesse Jarnow and Rich Mahan. Jesse Jarnow is a renowned music journalist and writer, having published several books and contributed to critically-acclaimed content about some of our favorite bands, including Osiris’ own After Midnight. Rich Mahan is a musician from California who lives in Nashville and has toured and played with several groups over the years, including the alt-country band Shurman. In 2019 he released his latest record, Hot Chicken Wisdom- a tribute to fallen friends, callbacks to good times, liquid conversations deep into the night, and experience accrued over an adventurous life.

Adam Deitch and Jesus Coomes Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of Comes A Time, Adam Deitch and Erick “Jesus” Coomes of Lettuce join the guys to talk about the present iteration of the band and their new album, Unify, how hip hop was a major part of Lettuce’s musical identity, and a story from Jesus about getting Kanye West’s number on his Nokia phone, and then jamming on “All Falls Down.” You’ll also hear about how Jesus and Adam met through a jam with “Lil’ John” Roberts, a deep dive on sampling and different variations of funk, and how the best musicians, including Oteil, are the most humble according to Jesus.

Lettuce is a funk band from Boston best known for their deep-pocket rhythms and buoyant instrumentation. Much of their unique style is propelled by their rhythm section- bassist Jesus Coomes and drummer Adam Deitch are the rhythmic force behind the sextet, each utilizing their experience working with legendary artists ranging from Eric Krasno to Kanye West to John Scofield. Approaching thirty years since their humble Boston beginnings, the relentlessly soulful funk outfit has essentially lived on the road, embodying, night after night, the sly wink of its moniker: “Let us play!” Their new album, Unify, comes out on June 3, and you can catch them on tour all throughout the summer!
