    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time, comedian Gary Gulman joins Oteil and Mike to talk about why we’re supposed to be exactly where we are at all times, “doing the work” to improve your mental health and how it’s impossible to stop positive progress once you’ve started, and the importance of simultaneously knowing that you suck and that you’re a badass. They also discuss Gary’s new HBO Max comedy special, the relationship between suffering and art, and Gary’s memoir that he’s working on. Gary offers experiential insights on navigating artistic development and mental health challenges, and provides helpful tips that everyone can benefit from.

Gary Gulman has established himself as an eminent performer and a peerless writer during his 25-year career. A Boston native, Gary has been a scholarship college football player, an accountant, and a high school teacher. Today he is one of the most popular touring comics, selling out theaters around the country. He is currently on his Born On 3rd Base Tour, and in November he performed to a sold out crowd at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City for the NY Comedy Festival. Gary has made four masterful TV specials including his most recent universally acclaimed stand-up special for HBO, The Great Depresh, a tour de force look at mental illness which is equal parts hilarious and inspiring. In 2019 he appeared in the international blockbuster Joker, and he will co-star with Amy Schumer in the upcoming Hulu comedy series, Life & Beth. Gary is currently writing a memoir for Flatiron Books, tentatively titled K Through 12, which he discusses in this episode.

Michael sheds light on some of our favorite topics discussed on Comes A Time, and provides fascinating insights on the connections between beginnings and endings, ancient and modern-day rites of passage, and how to repurpose the ego to function as a helpful critic. Gary Lambert Nov 12, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time, Gary Lambert joins Oteil and Mike to talk about the eclectic range of influences of the Grateful Dead, the ways that art can reflect the state of a society, and why it's important to take healthy breaks from “the earth clock,” as Mike cleverly describes it. You’ll hear Gary tell the guys a serendipitous story about how Phil Lesh directly influenced him to become a bass player, discuss Bill Graham’s incredible attention to detail and his greatness as a promoter, and a jazz concert that Gary saw in 1972 that left the audience quite literally steaming. Gary has witnessed some of the greatest musicians of all time take the stage, and in this episode he tells Oteil and Mike all about his decorated musical life.

Gary Lambert has worked in music for most of what he laughingly calls his “adult life,” including jobs with the late legendary impresario Bill Graham, and a 15-year stint as founding writer/editor of the Grateful Dead's official newsletter, The Grateful Dead Almanac. Since 2008, Gary has co-hosted Tales From The Golden Road, a weekly talk and listener-participation show on SiriusXM Radio’s Grateful Dead Channel. In 2021 the show took the conversation into the video streaming realm with Dead Air with Lambert & Gans, an interview segment that streamed on nugs.net during the set breaks at shows on Dead & Company’s summer and fall tours. As a musician Gary has played live and recorded with Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Henry Kaiser, Richard Thompson and many other revered musicians, and in this episode he shares some of his incredible musical experiences with listeners.

George Porter Jr. Oct 29, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Comes a Time, the one and only George Porter Jr. joins Oteil and Mike for an enriching conversation about his riveting life in music. You’ll hear about why George is proud of the record that he made over quarantine and how the process of making it was different than what he’s used to, George's indoctrination into the world of the Grateful Dead and why his version of “Eyes of the World” is Oteil’s favorite, as well as what it was like to grow up as a musician in New Orleans. You’ll also hear Oteil and George dive deep into the low end as they discuss pocket vs. chops for bassists, the story of how George got sober and never looked back, and why we have a donut shop and George’s father to thank for his masterfully funky bass playing.

George Porter Jr. founded The Meters in 1965 alongside Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters carved their own place in history with syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans’ deep African musical roots. They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter’s heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George’s reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Porter will forever be New Orleans music royalty, and he calls the city home to this day.

Check out George Porter Jr. and Runnin’ Pardners new album, Crying For Hope, here.

    Will Siu Oct 15, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Comes a Time, psychedelic medical practitioner Will Siu talks with Oteil and Mike about his experience with psychedelics and treating patients with them as a psychotherapist. Having received degrees from several of the most prestigious universities in the world, Will is incredibly knowledgeable on some of our favorite topics here on Comes A Time, and in this conversation the three discuss big business entering the psychedelic world and how that’s changed the dynamic of the field in recent years, finding your own version of sacredness, and much more. They also talk about why psychedelics aren’t a guaranteed cure to all problems, advice on coping strategies to ease stress and feel more connected with life, and Will’s unlikely journey that led him to become a psychedelic pioneer.

Will Siu, MD, DPhil, completed medical and graduate school at UCLA and the University of Oxford, respectively, before training as a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School. He remained on the faculty at Harvard for two years prior to moving to New York City to further pursue his interest in psychedelic medicine as a practitioner and public advocate through speaking, writing, and social media. He is an advisor to Bexson Biomedical and People Science, and a co-principal investigator on a pilot research study exploring MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Will has been trained by MAPS to provide MDMA-assisted therapy, and maintains a private practice in Los Angeles where he provides individual psychotherapy and ketamine-facilitated psychotherapy. He approaches his work with the goal of lasting, patient-centered healing—using his skills and experience to help his clients find healing within themselves. He teaches and supervises therapists and psychiatrists as part of his clinical practice.
