In this episode of Comes a Time Mike and Oteil talk with filmmaker and producer Amir Bar-Lev, who joins the duo for an infatuating conversation about his masterpiece documentary Long Strange Trip, and finding ways to embody the qualities that we love about our cultural heroes. Each minute of this riveting discussion is packed with insightful commentary on some of our favorite topics that we visit on Comes a Time, so buckle up! You’ll hear the three talk in-depth about the Grateful Dead’s pivotal mark on American culture, De La Soul and how the New York hip hop scene in the 90’s resembled the Summer of Love in San Francisco, and the importance of beatnik history. Oteil provides compelling thoughts on being a “Grateful Dead ambassador,” as Mike calls it, and the three explore how the ideas and art that one collides with act as a “signpost” through life's journey.

Amir Bar-Lev is an American filmmaker and producer noted for his outstanding work in directing documentary films. He received initial recognition for directing the award-winning documentary Fighter in 2000, and he also directed The Tillman Story, which premiered as a Domestic Documentary Finalist at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. His most recent work, Long Strange Trip, is a fantastic 6-part film on the story of the Grateful Dead. The documentary runs just under 4 hours, and made Amir a household name (to say the very least) within the jam community. In this episode you’ll hear him talk about what it was like to tell the story of the band, and learn about a thought-provoking insight that he has to offer regarding antithetical comments made by Jerry Garcia.

Episode 50 - Bill Kreutzmann and John Mayer Jun 11, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Comes a Time, the show celebrates its 50th episode with a can’t-miss conversation, as Bill Kreutzmann and John Mayer join Oteil and Mike for an action-packed discussion! The four dig deep on their musical philosophies, Billy’s recent shows in Hawaii with Carlos Santana and Billy Strings, and Mayer jokes amongst Deadheads. You’ll also hear Oteil ask Billy about his “social sliver” microdosing strategy, Mayer talk about the new album that he made over quarantine and how it’s going to “piss off some Deadheads,” and some fantastic insights on Jerry Garcia’s guitar playing from the people who know it best.

Bill Kreutzmann was the drummer of the Grateful Dead for their entire 30-year career, and has been keeping the spirit of the group’s music alive with Dead & Company and side projects like Billy & the Kids ever since his days with the Dead. Hardly in need of an introduction, Kreutzmann was the rhythmic nucleus to the Grateful Dead’s cohesive and unified style of jamming, driving the heartbeat of the band through their improvisational explorations. His style of drumming is heavily influenced by jazz and funk music, but his appreciation for all styles can be heard in his steering of the Grateful Dead’s spontaneity.

John Mayer, who also needs no introduction, is the lead guitarist for Dead & Company. Aside from his playing in Dead & Company Mayer has had a massively successful career as a pop artist, amassing 7 Grammy awards, 4 platinum albums, and over 17 million album sales worldwide. His talents have been praised by the legendary musicians he’s collaborated with, an impressive list that includes names like Eric Clapton, Jay-Z, and B.B. King. Mayer defies the boundaries set by genres, which allowed him to adapt his playing style and musical outlook upon joining Dead & Company, as he discusses in the episode.

    Episode 48 - Luther Dickinson & Brandon "Taz" Niederauer May 28, 2021
    Show notes

This week on Comes A Time, Luther Dickinson and Brandon "Taz" Niederauer join Oteil and Mike for an action-packed episode chock full of captivating conversation. Oteil, Luther and Taz discuss their connection to Col. Bruce Hampton and the impact that his teachings had on each of them, and Taz describes what it was like to play with Bootsy Collins. You’ll also hear Luther ask Mike about the conceptual thought process behind joke delivery in stand-up comedy, and Mike’s insightful comparisons between improvisational music and stand-up.

Luther Dickinson is a guitarist and vocalist best known for his work in the North Mississippi Allstars, a soulful blues-rooted group that he co-founded with his brother Cody in 1996. The son of legendary Memphis record producer Jim Dickinson, Luther has lived a life decorated with music since he was an infant. His soaring slide guitar playing has landed him on stage with legendary artists like The Black Crowes and Phil Lesh, and when he speaks about music his thoughtful approach to his creative process is unmistakable. The Mississippi Allstars 2019 album Up and Rolling can be listened to here.

Brandon "Taz" Niederauer is one of the most exciting guitar players in the world- and he’s only 18 years old. Taz’s talent has been readily apparent from a very young age, as he had already played with The Scorpions, Gregg Allman, Stevie Nicks, and Derek Trucks by the time he was 15. Needless to say, Taz is the premier name for young guitarists. His wildly energetic playing and expressive note selection have allowed him to stand as a beacon of light for instrumentalists in an increasingly digitized era of music, and his passion for his craft shines through when he speaks about it.
