    On this episode of Comes A Time Oteil and Mike sit down with legendary singer Lester Chambers of the Chambers Brothers. Lester talks with the guys about how to instill habits of happiness instead of negativity within one’s self, the incredible story about how he escaped from a sharecropper’s farm with his family to move to Los Angeles and begin his music career, and why you need to always put yourself first in life. Lester also tells the guys about how the Chambers Brothers had to sneak into the studio at night to record "The Time Has Come" with no overdubs, how his brother gave Lightning Hopkins the idea for his signature slicked back hair look, and much more.


    Lester Chambers is the lead singer of the 1960s soul rock group, The Chambers Brothers. The Chambers Brothers are a psychedelic soul band best known for their eleven-minute 1967 hit, "Time Has Come Today" (ring any bells?). He has released multiple albums as a solo artist, and was recently featured in Questlove’s Summer of Soul documentary. Lester keeps the spirit of the Chambers Brothers alive in The New Chambers Brothers alongside his son Dylan.

    This week on Comes A Time Mike and Oteil are joined by Jamie Parganos to discuss a clear definition of “mindfulness,” the importance of finding ways to stay creative, and her company Creative Muse Inc., which provides comprehensive programming and mentorship to youth and adults with an emphasis on creativity and mindfulness as 21st century skills. They also discuss reinforcing mindfulness tactics in children in order to develop positive habits, discovering breakthroughs through taking breaks, and how we need to change our approach to education as the world evolves.


    Jamie Parganos began her foray into youth development after being requisitioned to write an original children's musical. After spending years as a recording artist, Jamie transitioned full-time into running after school programs. She has worked for Good Shepherd Services (formerly Groundwork), Manhattan Youth, Cambridge Learning Center, South Asian Youth Action, LEAP, Broadway Bound Kids, and Kaplan at elementary, middle, and high schools across New York City. Jamie has a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree pending thesis submission in Nonprofit Management and Organizational Change. She also works as the Project Manager for The New School’s “Management and Social Justice” conversation series.

Amy and the guys talk about the history of Woodstock before the festival and why she enjoys the artistic community there, the story of Levon Helm quitting Bob Dylan’s electric band to work on an oil rig in New Orleans, and the importance of being pushed off a musical cliff every once in a while. Amy also tells the guys a story about how her mettle was tested as a young musician in front of an all-star lineup, what it’s like to balance being a touring musician and a mother, Levon’s musical purity and why he wouldn’t play the games of the industry, and much more!


    Amy Helm is a singer-songwriter best known for her work with Ollabelle, the New York City-based folk group. She is also the daughter of Levon Helm, one of the greatest American musicians of all time and a founding member of The Band. She has won multiple Grammys as a performer and a producer, and her impressive discography and musical resume are testaments to her intense dedication towards her craft. Amy currently tours year round with her own band and continues to perform and produce concerts at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, the home of the Midnight Ramble.

You’ll hear the guys discuss DJ Logic’s formative musical influences that he listened to while growing up in The Bronx, the improvisational spirit of his music, and linking up with Medeski, Martin, and Wood at CBGB. You’ll also hear them discuss meditation and finding your ideal mental space, how all the different flavors of NYC music inspire DJ Logic, spinning records on vinyl vs. digitally, and why he feels like he comes from outer space.


    DJ Logic is one of the world’s most accomplished turntablists. He is widely credited for introducing jazz into the realms of hip–hop, and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has amassed a veritable mountain of collaborations, including a full-fledged band with members of Blues Traveler (The John Popper Project ft. DJ Logic), a trio with Steve Molitz & Freekbass (Headtronics), and collaborations with artists ranging from the likes of Bob Weir, John Mayer, Medeski Martin and Wood, Carly Simon, Jack Johnson, Vernon Reid, Mos Def, and many more. While the context of his work may vary, DJ Logic’s spinning skills are certifiably beyond reproach.

Justin tells the guys about the work that Conscious Alliance does to provide food for people in need throughout America, how his experience with Cerebral Palsy helped him develop a positive outlook on the world, and the extremely gratifying emotional reaction that he experiences from Conscious Alliance. He also tells the guys about the logistics of efficient food distribution, what it was like to learn to walk four separate times and learn to read at age 21, and why he embraces the attitude of “I don’t know, let’s try it.”


    Since 2012, Justin Levy has served as executive director of Conscious Alliance, a Colorado-based national hunger relief nonprofit that uses the connective power of art, music, and partnerships with food brands to feed communities in need. Their belief is that there is enough food to feed everyone in the country if it’s distributed at the right place and the right time. Conscious Alliance brings healthy food to communities across the U.S., with an emphasis on remote and rural areas, including Native American reservations. What began as a grassroots food drive at a local show has grown into a national movement, and has provided more than 6 million meals, to since its inception in 2002.

    Bill Summers is a New Orleans based Afro-Cuban jazz/Latin jazz percussionist, who plays primarily on conga drums. He played with Los Hombres Calientes through the 90’s, and has since worked behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and in this episode you’ll hear all about his incredible life of music and spirituality.
