Energy & Details: Approach to the Season – Scotty Walden, Head Coach, UTEP Dec 08, 2023
    Show notes

Congratulations to Scotty Walden on being named the new head coach at UTEP. He’s the second youngest coach in the FBS, and being the youngest is nothing new to him. In 2016, at 26 years old and the head coach of East Texas Baptist, he was the youngest head coach in college football.

Coach Walden was briefly the interim head coach at Southern Miss in 2020, making him the youngest FBS coach at that time. He then was the youngest head coach at Austin Peay when the Governors hired him in 2020.

We have been fortunate to talk with Coach Walden since the beginning of the podcast. Most recently, he joined us this summer to take part in our Season series and give insight into all the different phases of the season. In this episode, we have put together all of Coach Walden's Season highlights.

If you didn't know about Scotty Walden before, he is someone you will hear about often moving forward as he continues to rise in the profession. He’s one of the most authentic, genuine people you will meet, a true servant leader, and I am sure success will follow him wherever he goes.

The Disciplined Pursuit of Less – Tony Holler, Feed the Cats Dec 05, 2023
    Show notes

It is the time of year when coaches gear up for the offseason. Some teams are already back in the weight room and training hard. We always like to have Tony Holler back on the podcast during this time to help educate coaches on preparing for another season and getting the most out of our athletes.

Tony Holler is the creator of Feed the Cats, a revolutionary sprint training program that has gained a strong foothold in football. In this episode, Coach Holler applies the Feed the Cats mentality to all positions, whether they are guys in space or in the trenches.

By taking a sprint-based approach, coaches create more explosive players. And ultimately, putting more speed on the field is a recipe for game-day success.

The Offseason Journey – Ideas from Bill Walsh Nov 28, 2023
    Show notes

The offseason journey is a time to review, reflect, and determine where your team goes next. It’s also a time for you to determine how you will grow and develop as an individual in the coaching profession.

In this episode, we share an excerpt from Bill Walsh’s book Finding the Winning Edge to get you thinking about your offseason journey.Coach Walsh was one of the best ever because he knew how all aspects of coaching fit into the big picture, down to the finest details of what it takes to win from individual positions, units, and teams.

Though this book is now over 30 years old, it reads like it was written recently. The knowledge Coach Walsh shared is timeless and can help you in your development now as much as it did the many coaches from his coaching tree who went on to have outstanding careers as head coaches.

    1. Set up a calendar
    2. Plan vacation
    3. Schedule important meetings
    4. Establish an environment with veterans
    5. Set objectives and expectations with players
    6. Assimilate new players
    7. Evaluate personnel: Do they fit with past season schemes
    8. Evaluate your team’s systems
    9. Establish a procedure for rating each play and series
