    Episode 305 - Robert Benesh Mar 31, 2011
    Show notes

Chicago native Robert Benesh was on the path to become a singer-songwriter before he even knew it. His earliest musical experiences involved attending folk music concerts with his father, whose acoustic guitar would ring throughout the house nightly. The romance of a single person on stage with nothing but his instrument and voice has resonated with him ever since those early years. And now, after a lifetime of various musical explorations, Benesh has found a voice that's all his own. Benesh's lyrics are deeply rooted in a narrative tradition. His songs tell stories of revenge and desperation, laced with a persistent, numbing guilt. He often takes stories on in first person, offering a direct perspective on the motives that drive his protagonists and providing just a shred of sympathy and justification for their actions. Benesh's storyteller lyricism grew especially out of a lifelong love of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, a record that still inspires him today.

    Episode 303 - Olga Wilhelmine Munding Mar 14, 2011
    Show notes

OLGA If you do not already know Olga, just listen to her music and you will.As this lithe, willowy woman settles into her guitar, the throaty voice that pours out of her takes you by surprise, transporting you to the easy rhythm of a sultry New Orleans afternoon. Gritty and honest, soulful and stirring, Olga sings about love and loss, relationships and the road ahead.Fans all over the world will tell you that Olga s songs have an undeniable authenticity to them, stemming from inspiration drawn from her own life, a journey steeped in music, and the blues. Olga spent years honing her sound in the hill country of northern Mississippi, with friends and mentors like Los Lobos (her "favorite band, and people!") and blues legend Jessie Mae Hemphill helping shape her musical trajectory.Born and raised in San Francisco, Olga was classically trained in music as a child. Her parents, who moved stateside from Innsbruck, Austria, encouraged her as she began writing songs on the piano at the age of five. In high school, Jimi Hendrix provided her first taste of the blues. "I began music very early, and started writing songs very young," she recalls. "I got into the business side of things through a chance meeting with a record archivist at a Grateful Dead show in my late teens. He introduced me to Los Lobos and Maria Muldaur, and I apprenticed with Maria soon thereafter. Los Lobos "adopted" me, and let me hang out and observe how they did things. I often sat on the stage during their shows."

    Episode 302 - Jarod Facknitz Mar 06, 2011

That was yesterday and here is the show today. It was a real treat for the CAU crew as they were all in the studio at the time and got to be a part of the show. As you will hear, we had a ton of fun. Episode 299 - Lynn Anselmo Feb 20, 2011
    Show notes

Lynn Anselmo and his lovely wife "Little Lynn" joined me for a week last summer and we re-united after not seeing each other for more years than any of us would care to admit. I can tell you this about long lost friends, don't let time pass. Reach out and find your friends from your past. Being together with Lynn and Lynn was a true blessing. We were all involved in the creation and implementation of a venue way ahead of it's time. We were all in Vail Colorado and along with several others, opened a 700 plus venue in downtown Vail that was as professional as any venue during it's time. The only real mistake we made was being too advanced. The venue "Studio In The Rockies" was designed way ahead of it's time. It was the perfect place to record music videos, but it was operational about three years before M-TV. We produced very big name entertainment 7 nights a week during the ski season. We were just a couple years too early. Now, as I listen to this show, it brings all of the joys and pains of those years back and surprisingly enought, I would not trade any of those experiences for anything. Lynn and Lynn, as I write this missive, I have tears of joy and remembrance. Now I have to come invade the South and Lynn, I want to go to an open mic with you and sing some songs. I love your both....

    Episode 298 - Ben Ripani Feb 13, 2011
    Show notes

Embracing the classic yet contemporary sound of Americana in the tradition of artists like Ryan Adams and Wilco, a new voice is rising: Ben Ripani. Traveling the road that winds from the towering buildings of the metropolis to the rolling hills of the farmlands, Ben's songs tell stories of hope and love, of being lost and found; his music speaks of and to life's challenges and rewards. The journey would begin after college, having realized music was the only path for him, the Chicago native, self taught singer songwriter moved to San Diego and formed the rock band "Down With Leo". With them he recorded a 3 song demo in 2004, a full length album called "The Shaking Ground" in 2006, and 5 song EP in 2007. During his time with Down With Leo, Ben found his songwriting voice, stated to "have perfected pace changes and sophisticated compositions to make every song interesting".Writing from a personal perspective about his life and his world, "Lyrically, each track tells a story and the narrative is revealed as the song builds".(San Diego Reader Review) Ben's desire for learning music would then take him from San Diego to Phoenix where he attended the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. While at school Ben worked with producer Paul Ricahards and Bert Stone to record his debut solo album "Hope Street" which was released in December 2008. The album is diverse and honest, passionate "with rich instrumentation and soulful vocals. Some songs here are stripped to only the acoustic guitar to showcase Ripani's poetics, which certainly hold up." (Max Herman: Illinois Entertainer) Each track is " a cut that soothes but pulls at the borders of the heart, briefly mounting passionately in the refrains. Slowly, your dragged beneath in his understated gems, fascinated, realizing just how compelling Ripani's music is, how subtly it works its way into odd Angles and unruffled pleasure." (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker) Upon Ben's return to Chicago he formed his new band the Ben Ripani Music Co. This 5 piece band is comprised of Patrick Benson (percussion, vocals), Dave Marshall (bass, vocals), Chris Nakielski (keyboards, vocals), and Chris Lambert (guitar). The style of the band is that of Indie/Folk/Alt.Country/Americana with lyric based songs, involved texture and sound. It is hard not to engage in the honesty, moments of vulnerability and truth that is laid on the stage during live shows. Ben Ripani Music Co. recorded a two song demo in October 2009 featuring "East Side Train" and "Open Mile", and is in the studio now recording a full length album with an expected release date of October 2010. The band will continue to tour, travel and is looking forward to playing in a city near you.
