    Episode 527 - Rory Sullivan Nov 26, 2013
    Show notes

Growing up with small-town roots, between big city living and backcountry roads, it's no wonder Rory Sullivan developed a unique mix of musical taste. His blending of sounds, ranging from the versatile guitar and songwriting of James Taylor, husky voice of Marc Cohn, and contemporary pop sensibilities of John Mayer, allows Rory to create music worthy of the icons that preceded him. Since quitting his day job at The Post House Diner back in 2005, Rory has played over 550 clubs, colleges and festivals, opened for Stephane Wrembel, Luke Brindley, James Maddock, Eric Andersen, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Craig Bickhardt, Mutlu, Todd Carey, and Curtis Peoples and his songs have been featured on an album with Emmylou Harris, John Oates, Neko Case, Cyndi Lauper, and Shelby Lynne, NPR, has had steady rotation on satellite, internet, and college radio, and has music featured in multiple films including "Finding Seoul". Tim Westergren of Pandora Radio says, "Rory's music represents a particular part of our catalogue, independent artists who are getting a lot of exposure." His debut EP "Here All Along", produced by Grammy Winning Producer Will Ackerman released Aug 2009, features Sullivan's acoustic roots and songwriting while his latest studio release "Rory Sullivan and the Second Season" produced by Justin King in Brooklyn NY, released Jan 2012 features his music with full band production. Rory Sullivan relocated from Delaware to NYC in 2011 and then to Chicago in the Fall of 2012 to begin the next phase of his artistic journey. This past year Rory took the Grand-Prize for the Cd Baby Songwriting Contest ranking over 3,000 songs, winning over $10,000 in prizes including a flight to NYC for a recording session. Rory took home again yet another Grand-Prize for the Sara Evans Songwriting Competition, awarding him a Facebook feature by Sara herself, thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and ranking over 3,000 other songs. "I'm always drawn to songs with amazing lyrics, songs that really make you feel emotion or you feel like you're right there in the middle of it. "Ride The Rails" by Rory Sullivan really struck me the first time I heard it.", said Sara. Sullivan has spent the majority of months of 2013 touring and writing and recording his new album set to be released next year. He just released a new single entitled "Better Now" for the motion picture "Finding Seoul" and is in the top 20 for the Durango Boots Sole Performer Contest.

    Episode 525 - Nana Zabic Nov 19, 2013
    Show notes

My apologizes to Nana Zabic and Frank Barbaric. Somehow this got lost and is now found. Nana is a true multi-media artist her media is words and her palatte is music. I just re-listened to the entire show and it was a joy!Nana resides in Chicago and hails from Croatia, by way of Serbia, Hungary, and Czech Republic. She was first a poet and a writer, and she's been writing songs since 1998. She has performed and recorded both solo and as a member of Patti's Breakfast (Belgrade), Good Apples (Chicago), and The Adaptations (Chicago), oscillating between indie folk and loud rock. Although she's been living in the United States since 2002, her style bears an imprint of her Yugoslav roots: Nana grew up surrounded by American and European rock and cabaret, as well as the traditional melodies and rhythms of her homeland situated between East and West. As a singer-songwriter, she sublimates diverse musical influences and churns out tunes that sound both familiar and unique. Contact: nana.zabic@gmail.com

    Episode 524 - Jack Grendel Nov 18, 2013
    Show notes

Jack Grendel joined us on the same day that we recorded Kirabella Frabotta. They were playing at the same venue that night. Somehow I lost all the photos of Jack's show, but there are some great videos from the show.https://vimeo.com/74472363https://vimeo.com/74472362Jack grew up in Northern Michigan and now lives in Nashville and has a band there with, perhaps, either the best or worst name for a band "Terrible". We recorded "Terrible" in late August, and will be posting that show shortly. We had a great time recording Jack's show and Terrible's show. I am certain you will enjoy both.

    Episode 522 - The Sweet Maries Nov 01, 2013
    Show notes

The Sweet Maries are led by Amy Shoemaker and Susie Lofton, with their amazing vocal blend and soaring harmonies, and two of Chicago's best-loved musicians, Jim Cox on upright bass and Don Stiernberg on mandolin, performing originals and some of the best-loved songs of the 60's. Very acoustic, very much listening music, very heavenly all together. This show is one of my favorites for 2013. Amy and Susie are such lovely ladies and produce brilliant harmonies. Add to that Mr Jim Cox on Upright Bass and the living master of the Mandolin, Mr. Don Stiernberg and you have a show that is guaranteed to please. I highly recommend that you see this group LIVE!

    Episode 521 - Jesi Jones Oct 28, 2013
    Show notes

Nashville based singer-songwriter Jesi Jones fell upon her passion for songwriting quite literally. At sixteen she took a tumble during her basketball team's state finals game which led to a series of knee surgeries, forcing her attention elsewhere. She wrote her first song during her time of recovery and soon after, formed the band Waiting for Iris. WFI toured for several years supporting two full length albums, playing over one hundred dates a year and opening for artists such as Nichole Nordeman, Joy Williams (Civil Wars), Point of Grace, Mark Schultz, Newsboys, Newsong, Petra, Fred Hammond and Wayne Watson. In 2006 Jesi began her career as a solo artist and quickly enjoyed success on Ourstage, the online indie community popularized by Spin Magazine. Here she garnered the Grand Prize twice, eight #1's, twenty- three top 10's, a slot on Paste Magazine's February 2009 CD Sampler (alongside artists such as Tom Waits, Neko Case, M. Ward), an opportunity to open for Grace Potter the Nocturnals, a feature on AOL Music and was recently featured on Nashville's Local Lightning 100 Spotlight. Jesi has had the privilege of working with producers Mark Townsend (Reliant K), Marc Scibilia (Sony/ATV), and "Bones" Hillman (Midnight Oil), the joys of performing and recording with Michael Rhodes (The Players), Steve Bowman (Counting Crows), Rich Redmond (Miranda Lambert), Matt Pierson (Derek Webb), Mike Payne (Matthew West), Ken Lewis (Sara Bareilles), Steve Brewster (Jewel) and the honor of having Charlie Peacock purchase a copy of her latest EP, Full Circle. Jesi has written over three hundred songs, many of which have landed on various independent projects. Her song "Hurricane" was placed in the Sundance Film Festival feature "Compliance," released August 17th, 2012. She has co-written with Stephony Smith (Faith Hill), Dennis Matkosky (LeAnn Rimes), Jeremy Bose (Plumb), Steve Wilson (Leeland), John Goodwin (Jeff Bridges), Monty Holmes (Lee Ann Womack), Tom Michael (Sonicflood), Sean Kelly (Sixpence None the Richer), Ron Alan Cohen (Rick Springfield) and many others. A classically trained pianist, Jesi volunteers as a private instructor at W.O. Smith School of Music, recognizing the gift of music as something not only to be shared but nurtured. It's no wonder her songs, a true reflection of who she is, have been richly defined as "an honest and relevant breath of fresh air." -Mark Townsend, Producer (Reliant K, Deas Vail)

    Episode 520 - Victoria Fuller Oct 22, 2013

Victoria Fuller's music is folk rock with jazz, blues, and pop overtones. Her voice is like a cross between Joni Mitchell and Ricky Lee Jones. Episode 519 - Mike Felten, AKA Johnny Lunchbucket Oct 20, 2013
    Show notes

The 1980's saw Mike Felten in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan living on a farm and playing with country rock cover bands until guys like Pete Seeger and Utah Phillips discovered Mike's folkier/political side. He played the 75th Anniversary of the I.W.W. and places like the Hiawatha Folk Festival, Rhinelander Festival and Pike Lake. Returning to Chicago in the 1990's , Mike found work playing heavy metal bass in a band called Lobotomy. Played some roots rock with the Redones and, coming full circle, settled into a weekly blues gig with Bellyful of Soul where guys like Pinetop Perkins, Roosevelt 'Booba' Barnes, Pete Myers, or Dancin' Perkins were likely to sit in. Mike has contributed to the television show 'Cupid" and the motion pictures,"Love Jones" Dualmania" and "High Fidelity" as an set advisor and an extra. He just finished another acting turn in a video for the band "Hotel Lights" featuring members of Ben Folds and the Archers of Loaf. Finally in 2002, Mike, tired of 'playing rhythm guitar behind Jesus' booked some time at Acme Studio and recorded 'Landfill' with Devin Davis engineering. After a couple of surgeries and some rehab on a bad knee, Mike went in the studio again. With BILL GLAHN producing, Mike laid down the basic tracks at LOU WHITNEY's (SKELETONS,MORELLS) studio in Springfield, MO. He took the rough tracks up to Third Ear Studio in Minneapolis where TOM HERBERS (LOW,JAYHAWKS)engineered sessions with JOHN ELLER and DAVE BOQUIST of SON VOLT adding multi-instruments.The result was "Tossin' It Away". Mike has continued his never ending tour from sold out shows in New York City to raucous country clubs in Dallas playing for neo-punks , evangelical Christians and everyone who would listen for a moment or two. Mike is happy to play in your living room, concert hall, saloon, coffee shop or the back of your flat bed truck. Folkways artist, Bob Everhart tells us that "Woody would've been proud" of what Mike is doing. Hope you'll agree and check him out real soon.
