    Episode 547 - Laura Joy Feb 12, 2014
    Show notes

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Laura Joy has been known to quell dark, angry bars full of ornery old Irishmen. Drawing comparisons that range from Joni Mitchell to Alison Krauss, Laura's percussive finger picking and buoyant voice have graced audiences from as far as the Sun Belt to the streets of Manhattan. While living in NYC, Laura was featured in the Jezebel Music Songwriter Showcase at Laila Lounge in Brooklyn and was a member of NY/NJ Port Authority's exclusive "Tunes in the Terminal" program. She opened for Nedra Johnson and Staceyann Chin in Brooklyn (CattyShack, Michfest Halfway Soiree). For 3 years, Laura helped organize and host the successful Paradigm Shift Event Series highlighting feminist inspired art and performance at various venues across The Lower East Side in NYC. Since moving to the Midwest, Laura has been featured in numerous regional festivals including the Independent Chicago Songwriter Festival, Metamora Folk Festival, and Ravenswood Remix. In January, 2013, she was awarded as a top finalist in the Broward Folk Club Songwriter Competition in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Perhaps it should be noted that Laura's recording of the ridiculously embarrassing Call Me Maybe parody, "Call Me Ishmael," was featured on Huffington Post in September 2012. The music video has 20,000+ views to date. The original intent was not internet notoriety, but simply to make a silly video for a high school reunion. Do not ask Laura to play the song live. She will inevitably become flustered and possibly break out in hives. Laura's latest album, "What I Know" was released on June 30th, 2011. It was recorded and mixed by Grammy-award winning engineer, Dae Bennett, and produced by Suzi Reynolds. The well-received album is a collection of songs about what Laura knows: love, laughter, and heartbreak. Laura plays a minimum of 50 shows per year and is willing to drive almost anywhere. She tours the nation, taking song requests from toddlers, petting puppies, and making folks smile. Her tales from the road (that includes pictures of the puppies) along with all other additional sights, sounds, and information may be found at www.laurajoymusic.com

    Episode 546 - John Kocher Feb 11, 2014
    Show notes

John Kocher came down from his hometown Milwaukee and joined us one sunny afternoon in October. We had a ton of fun recording his show.Growing up wasn't always easy for John Kocher: Dealing with living in a divided household, having very few friends, and being bullied frequently at school forced John to look in a new direction for support. Music quickly became the healing force that he was looking for and it definitely made him feel like "someone" for the first time in his life. College was the time where John truly discovered himself as an artist as he began composing songs of his own. Over the course of his college years and the years that followed John wrote a number of songs that would eventually be featured on both of his independent releases. After dabbling in the "band" scene, he decided the best route was to go it alone and experience life as a solo artist. John performed throughout the Metro-Milwaukee area for a number of years as well as in Chicago on a few occasions.John continues to write, record, and perform his emotive music. In the last few years he has been privileged to appear live on public television/local radio, release two albums independently (Halfway Home and Change), and perform at Summerfest. John is definitely on his way to finding a successful career in the music business and looks forward to sharing what he has with people who are willing to give him the chance to be heard.

    Episode 545 - Elli Perry Feb 08, 2014
    Show notes

Elli Perry"I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say." Flannery O'Connor once wrote those words, and with 50 letters she spelled out one of the greatest truths I know. My name is Elli. I have found my life mostly by stumbling across it in words. Some of those words have belonged to others, some have been my own. I was born and raised in Georgia by two Appalachian wordsmiths. They watched me run barefoot through the red dirt hills and aching trees that surrounded our home. They fed me a steady diet of The Beatles, the blues, ballads of bone and rust, and grits. Lots of grits. They plopped my tiny body into cars and trains and airplanes and showed me the great cities of the world. They taught me that art can transform and save. Their words have been the backbone of my life. It was their words of encouragement that gave me the boldness to leave school as an adolescent and pursue music as my full time job. I had begun writing songs in my childhood, first on loose sheets of paper and tape recorders, and later on the acoustic guitar I stole from my dad. By the time I was 15, I had written enough to become addicted to melody and lyric. I finagled my way onto barroom stages around Atlanta to sing for strangers. I quickly learned that I preferred the taste of whiskey to other spirits, and that I would never be able to give up the urge to create and share. I wrote and recorded and played and wrote, but eventually found myself young, foolishly arrogant, and stagnant. The words demanded more of me than I had to offer. And thus, I demanded movement. I went to Los Angeles to learn how to write a pop song and how to lose oneself. I went to Europe to learn how to live out of a suitcase, and to understand the difference between being lonely and being alone. I went to New York, and stayed, until I learned what it meant to be strong. In between, I wrote and recorded and played and wrote. When bookings were few and far between (or when I simply wanted an excuse to be around other drifters), I would busk in the New York City subways or on the steps of Sacre Coeur. I drove across this country and back enough times to put a '97 Buick Regal in its grave. And then there was New Orleans. In New Orleans, I found a place that was dark and swampy, beautiful and broken. It was strange and foreign and familiar all at the same time. This city became the safe haven I needed to release words that had been bottled up inside of me for a long time. I sat, and walked, and slept too much, and danced in parades, and got very drunk, and read, and thought long and hard until I found the means and the songs to create my new record, "The Salt The Sea." I didn't really know what I was making, out of this record or this chapter of my life, until I finished it. I could tell you what it's about. But I'd rather not. I think I would rather you listen for yourself, and see if the words share with you the things they shared with me. My name is Elli. I hate biographies. I let my words run away with themselves. Sometimes they carry me in the wrong direction, and sometimes they save me. Thank you for waiting patiently as they have twisted and turned in an effort to tell you who I am.

Ariada (Formerly The Outfit) Blending indie rock, pop and soul into a delectable stew of sound, Ariada is a Chicago-based outfit rapidly gaining a national foothold after over a year of tremendous local growth. The band has received an array of comparisons stretching from The Doors and Queen to the modern sounds of Alabama Shakes and Grace Potter, although Greg Shaw wrote that, "The one fact you cannot argue is that Ariada is unlike anything else." - Nanobot Rock Reviews - http://bit.ly/17pOHWb Over the summer, Ariada found themselves playing self-booked tour dates throughout the region. Episode 541 - Kevin Presbrey Jan 30, 2014
    Show notes

Drawing upon the influences of sultry singer-songwriters such as Jim Croce and Ray Lamontagne, Kevin Presbrey's latest creation Dust Unto Dust is a marriage of the catchy hook and the rootsy americana track you might hear on a early 1970s record. Collaborating with Seattle based producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Milo Greene, Ra Ra Riot, Rocky Votolato), Presbrey and drummer Danny Pratt ventured off to Bear Creek Studios in the Pacific Northwest with the intention of finding the organic acoustic sound they mutually enjoyed on their favorite vinyls from bands like America, The Eagles Fleetwood Mac. In this first departure from Painkiller Hotel, the Dust Unto Dust EP was created with good intentions and a heavy heart. Dust Unto Dust was constructed from song pieces and lyrics I'd jotted down for years, combined with new material I'd written following the death of my father in 2012. When I lost my father, who'd been such a big supporter of my music and inspiration to me, I spent a lot of time thinking about something he'd told me over and over again throughout my life, "Do what makes you happy, and do it as much as you can because you never know how long you'll be here to do it." There had been some times throughout the last few years during some of the rougher stretches that I'd questioned my music career and my writing, and now without my biggest fan it seemed like maybe it was time to hang it up and try something else. During the months following his passing, I struggled to crack a smile, I spent a lot of time thinking, and found myself leaning on the one thing that had been there for me since age 17, my music. As you can probably gather, I decided not to hang it up, and instead used songwriting as my therapy to get through my father's death. I thought about and still think about what my dad said to me. I know deep down music is a big part of who I am, and even though my dad isn't here anymore to cheer me on and talk shop after my shows, his guiding principles will always be here inside of me. His passing was a tragic event that abruptly changed my life, but in the end, the silver lining was the inspiration he gave me to create Dust Unto Dust.Check out the dates for Kevin's tour and go see him live. Episode 538 - Jon Allegretto Jan 23, 2014
    Show notes

Jon Allegretto joined us last November and we recorded a Podcast featuring Jon's songwriting skills in a stripped down acoustic unplugged format. as you listen to this show you will hear Jon's wonderful performance. Be sure to catch Jon and his band A Friend Called Fire tomorrow night January 24th at the Beat Kitchen.A FRIEND CALLED FIRE is a high-octane rock trio hailing from Chicago, IL. With a foundation based upon an infectious rhythmic assault, the band's music is a pairing of heavy grooves based in hard rock influence contrasted with delicate soundscapes and fused with compelling hooks and vocal melodies both genuine and purposeful. The band's diversity is apparent in their intense electric performances as well as spirited acoustic sets and proves that much like their name implies, A Friend Called Fire in many ways creates and destroys with passion and power. The trio is quickly making headway in their native Chicago in addition to many regional and national markets through relentless touring, marketing and promotion efforts. A Friend Called Fire's new single "The Lightning" presents a departure from their traditional sound, with a stronger emphasis on roots music influence and vocal harmony while retaining the energy and delivery for which the band is perhaps best known. The band is also hard at work on an upcoming documentary project inspired by their new music and based in the concepts of friendship and communication in the 21st century titled The Next Great Fire. A true working-class independent musical force, A Friend Called Fire handles all booking, marketing, promotions, artwork design and merchandising completely in-house with the highest level of detail and professionalism. They have performed over 200 shows in the span of only a few years, including six independent U.S. tours.
