    Episode 537 - Zain Lodhia Jan 21, 2014
    Show notes

Zain Lodhia is a Chicago-based singer/songwriter new to the indie pop/rock scene. With a diverse range of influences and strong acoustic roots, Zain began writing music as a hobby in college but it wasn't until he picked up guitar in early 2009 that it turned into a serious passion. After releasing the Memories EP in June 2011, he shifted his focus to writing and recording a full length album, The Leap, which was released in May of 2013. "Music has always been a passion of mine, but it wasn't until later in my life that I discovered the world of songwriting and production. It was only once I started writing myself that I developed a true appreciation for music's intrinsic value, but I soon realized it could mean so much more. Songs can grasp us in a way which emotionally ties us to its author, a connection which reveals our commonalities on the most basic level: our humanity. The fact that we all can feel joy, pain, and sorrow among other emotions prove that we are more similar than we are different, even though the circumstances which produce those emotions and their manifestations may drastically vary. We all have our own personal weaknesses, but each of us also has the strength and resolve to overcome them. It is through the relationships we build with the people in our lives that we find this strength and are able to achieve anything."

Episode 535 - Forbidden Knowledge (Nino Arobelidze, Pablo Gordy) Jan 12, 2014
    Show notes

Forbidden Knowledge (Nino Arobelidze and Pablo Gordy) is a concept born out of a novelty book of things people are not advised to do, but can be compelled or drawn to imagine doing. In a nutshell, this describes the musical stylings and viable fusions that Nino Arobelidze and Pablo Gordy have put together. Basically, the sounds say, "well, we shouldn't have tried this at home, because, well, it blew up." Urbanismz is a concept album, built on top of garbage trucks, Laundromats, shady restaurants and parking lot construction sites in the abundance of cheddar cheese bagel twists, broken (Boston Cream pie) donuts, egg and cheese croissants and midnight coffee, drowned by vats of water and vitamin C. Forbidden Knowledge headquarters are situated on the corner of the loudest six corner intersection in Chicago.

    Episode 534 - Kathy Greenholdt w/ Steve Dawson Jan 08, 2014
    Show notes

Kathy Greenholdt is a Chicago singer-songwriter whose earthy, elegant music explores the fragile nature of living. Her songs are a pop/rock/Americana mix - a sound described as Roy Orbison, Neko Case, and Leonard Cohen combined. In 2002, at age 38, Kathy played guitar for the first time. Since then, she has released five collections of critically praised original music. In 2013, Kathy released her newest album, When You're Dead, which she recorded with producer and songwriter/musician Steve Dawson of the band Dolly Varden. When You're Dead was launched with a sold-out show at one of Chicago's most beloved venues, The Hideout.Steve Dawson was born in California, raised in Idaho, and currently lives in Chicago. His songs show evidence of all 3 places – the California folk-rock of the early 70′s (Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Jackson Browne), the country music he heard growing up in Idaho, and the blues and soul music of Chicago. Dawson first picked up guitar at age 12 and began writing songs almost immediately. His first professional gig was playing guitar with Cadillac Carl and the Road Rangers at the Silver Dollar Saloon in Bellevue, Idaho. After high school, Dawson attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, studying jazz composition and songwriting, while also performing in the local folk music scene. In the early 90′s Dawson moved to Chicago. Upon his arrival he met Diane Christiansen and they formed the band Stump the Host, which became a training ground and a showcase for Dawson's eclectic songwriting. In 1995 Stump The Host changed personal and evolved into a new band, Dolly Varden, releasing the first of five albums that would reflect the growing craft and depth of his songs. Critics from Rolling Stone, Uncut, and the Village Voice, among many others, have praised Dawson's gift for melodic, evocative songwriting. Dolly Varden has toured all across the US and Europe over the last 18 years. In 2006 Undertow records released Dawson's first solo album, "Sweet Is The Anchor," a collection of quiet, layered songs recorded in Steve's home studio. Critics noted Dawson's heightened strength as both a songwriter and singer, combining elements of country and soul: "Sweet Is The Anchor is a vocalist's album awash in the languor of country music and the Saturday night highs of soul" (Chicago Daily Herald). Dawson's latest solo album, "I Will Miss The Trumpets And The Drums," (Undertow, 2010), was once again self-produced and recorded in Dawson's home studio, Kernel Sound Emporium. The follow up to "Sweet Is the Anchor," the new album features 13 haunting, melodic songs about change and letting go, sung in Dawson's plaintive tenor, with echos of classic country, pop and soul. In addition to performing and recording Dawson teaches songwriting and guitar at the world famous Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

    Episode 531 - The Littlest Birds 2013 Dec 17, 2013
    Show notes

The Littlest Birds are one of the finest examples of an original music performing Duo I have ever heard. I have recorded them twice now and booked them in Chicago. You are about to hear and see why I love these two brilliant performers. The Littlest Birds are a nationally touring cello and banjo duo from the Eastern Sierra of California. Together since 2010 they've performed 100s of shows across 24 U.S. States, and Canada, including festivals, concert series, radio stations, farmer's markets, fine restaurants, house concerts, weddings, bars, street corners, backyards, wine cellars, and even one 200 year old Mision deep in the heart of the Baja Peninsula. Recently they've been busier than ever, with several festival performances including The Millpond Music Festival, Mateel Summer Arts Festival, San Francisco Free Folk Festival, Oregon Country Fair, Beartrap Summer Festival, and the prestigious Vancouver Folk Music Festival in British Columbia, Canada. A 2012 performance at Fiddler's Crossing in Tehachapi was recorded by Peter Cutler and rebroadcasted on KPFK's Folk Scene program hosted by Roz Larman in its entirety to listeners around California and beyond. They've performed with Elephant Revival, Melvin Seals the JGB, Mountain Standard Time, The Brothers Comatose, Pharis and Jason Romero, Run Boy Run, Joe Craven, Mary McCaslin, Scott Miller Reyna Gellert, and Carolina Story. Both David Huebner and Sharon Martinson have classical music backgrounds supporting their current foray into Americana roots music. Some years ago you may've seen David on the Disney Channel, twice, as principal cellist of the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, which included a performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Or you may've run into Sharon deep in the forests of the southeast as she studied southern pine beetle ecology for her PhD at Dartmouth College where she also played french horn in their chamber orchestra.

    Episode 529 - Krista Hartman Dec 05, 2013
    Show notes

Adult Contemporary artist, Krista Hartman hails from the wild rose country in Canada. She spent countless Indian summers under the prairie stars at Fiddle Fests in her childhood amongst all those in her enormous lineage (on her mother's side of the family, there were 11 children and her father's, 17). Hartman learnt to play guitar at the age of 13 basing her foundation on a library of Ventures songs introduced by her father, Gus. The day after her graduation, Hartman married her guitar and fled to Quebec and then, the South Pacific, Asia and Europe for several years where she performed in bars, wrote songs and busked the streets. Upon her return, she attended The University of Alberta completing a Bachelor's in Education majoring in English and Theatre. While attending university, Hartman released her debut record PASSPORT in 2005, a reflection of her travels and then in 2010, her second release NOSTALGIA which featured a duet with Ron Sexsmith called "Broken in Two." Hartman has appeared live on CBC television, performed a melancholic version of The Canadian National Anthem in front of Canada's Prime Minister and India's Ex-President, Dr. Abdul Kalam (where she was photographed and featured in The Globe and Mail), and she has played countless live shows with several of Canada's most acclaimed artists.

Episode 528 - Natalie Duke and the Reckless Revival Dec 01, 2013
    Show notes

Natalie Duke's voice can either break your heart or smash it. Her head voice soars with a plaintive tone so sweet you'll want to cry; until her chest voice smacks you in the face and tells you to stop being such a baby. A professional singer since childhood, Natalie has the chops to back up her ambitious melodies. Her songs are sarcastic catharses lathered with sincere harmonies. She has the emotional reach of Fiona Apple and the light hearted vengefulness of Lily Allen, though she exists in a musical realm of her own. Natalie's intellectual yet unpretentious view of reality, transposed into song, will invade the minds and hearts of all who choose to listen.I had such a wonderful time recording this band. Their music is witty and joyful and sometimes sarcastic. I loved it.
