Chris Begg Returns and Shares Story About Playing Against Ronald Acuna Sr. (and Seeing Jr. as a Kid); Plus the Launch of "The Oppotaco Podcast" Relevant for Baseball Players and Fans Alike Jul 07, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 144 - Clark is joined again by guest host Chris Begg (former WBC and Olympic pitcher for Team Canada) who is now the co-host of The Oppotaco Podcast (on Apple Podcasts and Spotify) along with Jason Willow where they talk all things baseball, while bringing their expertise to the conversation (sometimes with special guests including current and former big leaguers.)

The guys start the show by discussing the other unicorn MVP candidate (not named Shohei Ohtani) with Ronald Acuna Jr., on pace to be in the very exclusive 40 home run - 75 stolen base club. They chat about whether his rookie cards are worth investing in now and Chris also shares a story about playing against Acuna's father and how he wished he asked Acuna Jr. for his autograph as a toddler.

Then Chris shares what's upcoming for The Oppotaco Podcast (another fivecardguys production) and why baseball prospects or parents of said prospects (as well as baseball fans in general) might enjoy this pod. A special episode of The Oppotaco Podcast will air on Cards To The Moon on Tuesday, July 11.

Clark and Chris then get back to talking baseball and sports cards as they give their list of players who have surprised them with their performance at the All-Star break – both good and bad (ie. Corbin Carroll's delightful season vs. Trea Turner's disappointing season.)

Finally, just for fun, Clark quizzes Chris, who is more of a low-end raw card collector, on recent high-end graded card sales to see how close he can get to the actual sold price.

What's Fair Game and What's Poor Hobby Etiquette (Pack Searching at a Retail Store; Making Trades Near A Booth at Card Show; Plus More Scenarios); Playing Over/Under on Recently Sold Cards Jul 04, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 143 - Clark, John, and Will open the show briefly talking about the article on espn.com titled "The controversial rise and uncertain future of box breaks" and discussing the future of breaking in the hobby.

For Hobby Headlines, the guys then go over some scenarios in the hobby (such as pack searching at a retail store, buying a second card to avoid a new lower comp value, and making a trade near a booth at a local card show) and deciding whether it's fair game, wrong, or just poor hobby etiquette.

Then they play a round of Over/Under where Clark picks a card that recently sold and throws out a dollar amount. Then John and Will guess whether the card sold for over or under that amount.

The guys end off the show with the regular weekly Pick 1 segment where each of them put up two cards and they debate which one they would invest in. The Pick 1 pairs this week include: Kyrie Irving Silver Prizm Rookie Card vs. James Harden Topps Chrome Rookie Card; Luis Arraez vs. Luis Robert; Julio Rodriguez Bowman Chrome Autograph Rookie Card vs. Elly De La Cruz Bowman Chrome Autograph Rookie Card.

Three Scenarios for the Future of Local Card Shops with Latest Fanatics News; FOMO Level on Ohtani Cards At All-Time High?; Playing Another Round of "Quiz Show" Jun 27, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 142 - Clark, John, and Will kick off the show by rating their FOMO level on Shohei Ohtani baseball cards and whether they are looking to buy high on any of his cards.

Then for Hobby Headlines, the guys get into the recent news that Fanatics/Topps is essentially restricting any Topps account holders to sell their allocation of products directly to consumers in a physical retail, bricks and mortar store. It was also stated the local card stores with Topps product allocation would not be allowed to resell them online or how most are seeing this is that those Topps account holders can’t use the product they receive for breaks unless approved by Topps themselves. They discuss what that might mean for local card stores, the price of hobby boxes, and the future of Fanatics Live.

Then Clark hosts another round of "Quiz Show" asking John and Will various questions about the hobby such as, Is the Matt Thaiss Topps Chrome autograph rookie card, which he inscribed “I am sorry that this is not Mike Trout" real or fake?; Which 2 teams in the NBA never had any trading card of one of their players sell for more than $60,000; Which player in the NBA Finals had the highest sale volume of sports cards over the last 12 months?

The guys end off the show with the regular weekly Pick 1 segment where each of them put up two cards and they debate which one they would invest in. The Pick 1 pairs this week include: Erling Haaland Topps Chrome rookie card vs. Max Verstappen Topps Chrome rookie card; Victor Wembanyama rookie card vs. Scoot Henderson/Caitlin Clark/Brandon Miller rookie cards; Mike Trout Bowman Chrome rookie autograph card vs. Shohei Ohtani Bowman Chrome rookie autograph card.

    Show notes

EPISODE 141 - Clark, John, and Will open the show talking about the Victor Wembanyama Topps Now relic card with a patch of a Yankees jersey that he wore when he threw out the first pitch of the Yankees game. They discuss whether it's worth the initial $200 price and what they think of flippers selling the card (with a 1,137 print run) for almost double their investment.

Then Mark Hill, founder of My Card Post, joins the pod to talk about the alternative sports card marketplace he launched recently, which is free to join as well as operates on a subscription model for those who want to sell their cards (with no seller fees). Show notes

EPISODE 140 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show discussing whether Luis Arraez of the Miami Marlins (flirting with a .400 batting average) and Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks (on track for NL Rookie of the Year Award) were currently being slept on in the hobby with some of their rookie card prices cheaper relative to other players who have mediocre stats than the two aforementioned players.

Then the guys welcome Jeremy Lee, host of the popular YouTube show Sports Cards Live, to the podcast where he shares his wealth of experience in the hobby dating back to the 1980s. That includes running a card shop in the '90s, selling online, making hobby friends and then interviewing them once he started his YouTube show. Jeremy also provides his insight on the growth of the hockey card market, whether collectors will consider alternative grading companies, as well as some of his memorable interviews on his show.

Then Clark, Hyung and John finish the episode off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. Show notes

EPISODE 139 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show talking about the iconic Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck rookie card, which is the first card that PSA has graded more than 100,000 cards of. The question is, "Will the PSA 10 maintain its 4% gem rate (and potentially experience a spike in value at any time in the future)?"

For Hobby Headlines, the guys participate in the first podcast Fantasy Sports Card Draft using the top 10 PWCC Most Collected Cards list plus adding five more prominent cards for a pool of 15 total cards to draft from. The winner is the team of five players that delivers the best "return on investment" in value over the next six months (starting from Draft Day to the end of 2023). The ROI will be determined using the CardLadder Index Values. The 15 players to draft from include: Michael Jordan / LeBron James / Tom Brady / Mickey Mantle (CL Value: 8,155) / Kobe Bryant / Luka Doncic / Patrick Mahomes / Babe Ruth / Stephen Curry / Mike Trout / Lionel Messi / Wayne Gretzky / Shohei Ohtani / Tiger Woods / Jackie Robinson.

Then Clark, Hyung and John play another round of Underrated/Overrated with the theme for this episode being types of short-printed (SP) cards such as printing plates, Gatorade image cards, and 2023 Topps Golden Mirror variation cards.

The guys finish the episode off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. This week's Pick One included: Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck rookie card (PSA 10 vs BGS 10); Stephen Curry Topps Chrome Refractor rookie card (BGS 9.5) vs. Lebron James Topps Chrome Refractor rookie card (BGS 9.5); and Stephen Curry Topps Gold /2009 rookie card (PSA 7) vs. Stephen Curry Bowman 1948 /2009 rookie card (BGS 9.5).
