A Debrief on the "Cardporn" Controversy and Discussion On Trustworthiness of Authenticators; Update on Tacofractor Cards; Quiz Show Contest Winner Announced Sep 08, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 158 - Clark, Hyung and John kick off the show by revisiting their discussion on the tacofractor insert card with the recent sale of the "Wild Card tacofractor" selling for more than $11,000. They also share what they've heard could be the redemption prize.

The guys then debrief about everything that's happened to cardporn – the self-proclaimed hobby watchdog who ironically has been alleged to committing several fraudulent transactions in the hobby.

Now the bigger question is if the hobby needs a watchdog at all. And how about the trustworthiness of authenticators? Can there be lessons learned from the high-end art world and how they use authenticators to establish what is real and what is fake.

At the end of the show, Clark announces the winner of the "Quiz Show" segment from Episode 156.

    Show notes

EPISODE 157 - Clark and Hyung open the show by discussing the departure of Brian Gray as CEO of Leaf Trading Cards, and whether his successor Kevin O'Neill can improve Leaf at all.

Then for Hobby Headlines, the guys discuss the other high-level departure in the hobby – the firing of Jeromy Murray, now former president of Beckett. Both Hyung and Clark then offer ideas and action plans on what they'd do if they took over Beckett (including bringing back the Beckett magazine but a new and improved version!)

Next, Clark introduces a new segment called, "Ask ChatGPT" and he asks the AI tool to name the top 10 most iconic sports cards of all time. Then Hyung tries to guess what ChatGPT came up with. Afterwards, the guys talk about whether they agree with ChatGPT's answers.

Finally, they play their regular "Pick 1" segment where they are given two players or cards and subsequently debate which one they would rather invest in. Hyung puts up the Ronald Acuna Jr. rookie autograph card vs. Mookie Betts rookie autograph card for debate. Clark puts up Shohei Ohtani's WBC rookie card vs. Aaron Judge Bowman Chrome rookie refractor autograph card.

Interview With Mac Gambill (aka mac_cardcollection on IG) On Creating Hobby Content Collectors Can Laugh At; LeBron Topps Autograph Cards Coming Soon?; Play Quiz Show For Chance To Win Prize! Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 156 - Clark starts the show discussing the LeBron James and Mookie Betts Topps Now baseball card that was recently released and why it might mean the return of LeBron James Topps autograph cards in the near future.

Then Clark welcomes Mac Gambill (mac_cardcollection on IG) to the podcast. They discussed Mac's approach to hobby content creation (ie. bringing humor and levity to the card space) as well as why he likes to collect both '90s basketball cards and modern soccer cards.

And Mac also participates in Clark's "Rapid Fire Questions" segment, where he gave his thoughts on the future of the hobby in 5 to 10 years as well as ranked some of the recent big hobby news by shock value (from the NFLPA breaking its licensing deal with Panini to Brian Gray leaving as Leaf CEO.)

Finally, Clark hosts another "Quiz Show" segment but asks the podcast listeners to participate. Listeners can DM their answers to the @cardstothemoon Instagram page or email hello@fivecardguys.com

If there is more than one qualified entrant (must be from U.S. or Canada) with the most correct answers, then a random draw will be conducted from that group to determine the winner of a sports cards blaster box. Good luck!

    Show notes
