    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Andrea Horwath Apr 17, 2019

Following the release of the Ford government’s first budget, Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath will share her alternative vision for an Ontario government that is focused on the priorities of everyday people, families and Ontario’s job creating businesses, rather than insiders. Join Canadian Club Toronto when Horwath speaks to the hope for a brighter future where people are at the centre of every decision government makes, and where Ontarians can expect more from their government, not less. Andrea Horwath is the Leader of Ontario’s New Democrats. From her early career in community development to today, she’s always believed that government should be about giving people the opportunity to build a good life no matter where in Ontario they live, or when this province became home. Born and raised in Hamilton, Andrea was elected to Hamilton City Council in 1997, then as the MPP for Hamilton-Centre in 2004. She is widely recognized as an effective leader, delivering results for people like forcing HST to be removed from hydro bills, forcing an end to proposed cost increases on seniors prescription drugs, and the creation of a Financial Accountability Office for the province. In 2012, she received the EVE Award in recognition of her public service. In 2018, Andrea led her party to become the Official Opposition – the largest Official Opposition in a generation. Today, half of the members of her MPP team are women, they represent ridings from every region of the province, and together they’re reflective of the diversity of Ontario. Andrea spends time travelling the province she loves, seeing and hearing first-hand the challenges Ontarians are facing – and proposing solutions. Also a mom, Andrea believes all Ontarians deserve health care they can count on, high quality seniors care and public schools that give kids a great start. She’s fighting for good jobs and real opportunities, and a more affordable life for everyone.

Sidewalk Labs has been busy over the past 18 months working on a Master Innovation and Development Plan for Toronto’s Eastern Waterfront, a plan that has the ambition to create a new model for innovative and inclusive cities in Toronto and abroad. Doctoroff will share his observations on the project so far and how this new model of urban innovation could transform city building as we know it. Dan Doctoroff will be joined in conversation with BNN Bloomberg’s Amanda Lang. Dan was President and Chief Executive Officer of Bloomberg L.P., the leading provider of news and information to the global financial community, until December 2014. During his tenure at Bloomberg, Dan led the company through the most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression by pursuing an aggressive strategy of investment, focused on enhancing the company’s core Terminal product, expanding into enterprise products and services, creating new businesses in government, law and energy, and building the company’s news operations, including its acquisition of Businessweek. During the seven years that he led the company, despite the financial crisis, Bloomberg’s organic revenues nearly doubled. Prior to joining Bloomberg L.P., Dan served as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding for the City of New York. With Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Dan led the city’s dramatic economic resurgence, spearheading the effort to reverse New York’s fiscal crisis after 9/11 through a five-borough economic development strategy. This plan included the most ambitious land-use transformation in the city’s modern history; the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site; the largest affordable housing program ever launched by an American city; and the formation of new Central Business Districts and Industrial Business Zones. Dan also oversaw the creation of PlaNYC, New York’s pathbreaking sustainability plan. Before joining the Bloomberg administration, Dan was Managing Partner of the private equity investment firm Oak Hill Capital Partners. While at Oak Hill, Dan founded NYC2012, the organization that spearheaded efforts to bring the Olympic Games to the city. Dan serves on the Boards of the University of Chicago, World Resources Institute, United States Olympic Committee, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Human Rights First. He is the founder of Target ALS, which raises funds for and has established a new model of collaboration to advance ALS research. He is a founder and chairman of Culture Shed, an innovative new cultural institution at the Hudson Yards in Manhattan. Dan is a graduate of Harvard College and The Law School at the University of Chicago. A native of Michigan, Dan has lived in New York for the past 32 years with his wife, Alisa. The Doctoroffs have three grown children.

Budget 2019: Protecting What Matters Most

The Honourable Victor Fedeli Apr 16, 2019
    Show notes

Ontario’s Minister of Finance Vic Fedeli will deliver remarks following the 2019 Ontario Budget set to be released on April 11. The government’s first budget under Premier Doug Ford will protect the core services that matter most to the people of Ontario, including its world-class health care and education systems, while putting the province on a responsible and sustainable path back to balance. The government is committed to creating and protecting good jobs in Ontario, and putting the people first in every decision government makes. Vic Fedeli was born and raised in North Bay. His grandparents chose to come to Ontario from Italy with ambitions of a far better life and more opportunity for their young families. In his 20s he opened Fedeli Advertising, the first ad agency north of Toronto. As a young entrepreneur, he developed the company into a global agency doing work all over the world, from their base in Northern Ontario. One of the proudest moments of his business career was when Fedeli Advertising was named 34th in the Top 50 Best Places to Work in Canada. In 1992, Vic sold the firm and devoted the next 11 years to managing three non-profit ventures. He founded Air Base Property Corporation, a local development agency that took over the airside assets of CFB North Bay. Vic used his business experience to write the business plan that attracted Voyageur Airways, which now employs over 350 people involved in repair and overhaul of aircraft from around the world. In 2003, Vic ran for mayor of North Bay and as a first-time candidate was elected with 75% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2006 in another landslide. As mayor, Vic transformed the city, restoring both hope and solvency. Moody’s Investors Service took notice, increasing the city’s credit rating five times to their highest possible rating – substantially reducing the city’s debt interest payments. Internationally, Vic was one of only two North American mayors invited to the prestigious Government Leaders Forum hosted by Bill Gates and had the pleasure to discuss a municipality’s role in governing, with former U.S. Secretary of State, Madeline Albright. He made news on both sides of the border when he successfully launched a grassroots campaign to reverse the U.S. ‘Buy American’ provision, earning special acknowledgment from then U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson. In 2011, after keeping his promise to step down as mayor after serving two terms, Vic was elected to serve the people of Nipissing at Queen’s Park. In 2014, Vic was re-elected as Nipissing MPP. He served as Energy and Finance Critic in the Official Opposition shadow cabinet. He was re-elected in 2018 and was appointed as Ontario’s Finance Minister and Chair of Cabinet by Premier Doug Ford. Vic and his wife Patty live in North Bay.
