    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Internet – an event that forever changed our world and the way we relate to each other. Reflecting on this milestone, Garrick Tiplady, General Manager of Facebook and Instagram Canada, will discuss Facebook’s journey over the past few years from the perspective of someone inside a tech company. We’ve all witnessed the burning-bright, meteoric rise of the Internet. And in just the past few years with almost the same intensity, we’ve seen the glow diminish. In this climate, it’s easy to dismiss the vitally important effects the Internet. Yet as the political and economic landscape continues to shift, building a stronger, more resilient Canadian economy means we must seize the opportunities presented by technology. Who stands to serve the most from digital empowerment? How is Facebook thinking about these challenges? How can we help Canadian businesses seize these opportunities, ushering in the next era of the Internet? Join Canadian Club Toronto on November 26 to unpack these questions and more. Garrick Tiplady will be joined in conversation with Amber Mac, President of AmberMac Media

Canada is the best country in the world in which to live, but slower economic growth over the next two decades threatens to erode Canadians’ standard of living. Join Canadian Club Toronto on November 25th as Don Lindsay discusses how governments, businesses and other stakeholders can work together to strengthen Canada’s economic capacity, spur investment and accelerate growth for the benefit of all citizens. He will also highlight the important role businesses must play in shaping a more sustainable and better future for Canadians. Don Lindsay was elected Chair of the Business Council of Canada – representing the CEOs of 150 leading Canadian companies, employing more than 1.7 million Canadians – in January 2019. In that role, he advocates for policies that will grow jobs and investment and provide opportunity and prosperity for all Canadians. Mr. Lindsay is President and Chief Executive Officer of Teck Resources Limited, Canada’s largest diversified resource company. As Chair of the International Zinc Association from 2007 to 2011, Don led the development and launch of the Zinc Saves Kids campaign, a program developed in partnership with UNICEF to address zinc deficiency, which claims the lives of approximately 450,000 children annually around the world. Under his leadership, Teck also launched its Zinc & Health program, which to date has reached more than 140 million people worldwide. Building a Strong Future for Canadians

    Sean Boyd Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

No business succeeds for long unless it has a good strategy – a well-executed strategy that works for the benefit of all stakeholders. The same holds true for governments. As Canada’s newly elected government takes office, it must continue to renew our country’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. It must allow the Nunavummiut to determine and govern their own future; a future that unlocks the potential of their people and rich natural heritage. As the biggest miner and largest private sector employer in Nunavut – with two mines, over 2,000 employees and nearly 700 Inuit working for it in the Kivalliq region – Agnico Eagle CEO Sean Boyd understands the potential of the region and the need to bring prosperity to Canada’s North. He is determined to ensure that mining works for all Canadians. Join Canadian Club Toronto on November 19 when Sean Boyd opens a dialogue with stakeholders on developing a comprehensive Arctic Strategy that will improve the quality of life in Canada’s North. A strategy that identifies the responsible development of Canada’s northern resources as key to bringing more job opportunities, higher education, improved food security, and a reduced dependence on polluting fossil fuels to Canada’s North. A strategy that brings together all stakeholders and levels of government to invest in building the social and economic infrastructure that is so vital to the North’s future, and to protecting Canada’s own borders and Arctic sovereignty. Sean Boyd serves as the Vice-Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Agnico Eagle Mines Limited. Sean was appointed the Company’s Chief Executive Officer in 1998 after having served as the Chief Financial Officer from 1990 to 1998 and Comptroller from 1985 to 1990. During Sean’s tenure as CEO, Agnico Eagle has grown from a small, single mine gold producer to a multi-mine international gold mining company. Sean has been recognized as The Northern Miner’s Mining Person of the year in 2007 and 2017. He has appeared on the list of The Best-Performing CEOs in the World in the Harvard Business Review in 2010, 2016 and 2017. Sean also serves on the Board of Directors for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation where he chairs the Granting, Impact and Stewardship Committee. He has also served on the Board of the World Gold Council and as a member of the St. Francis Xavier University Board of Governors. Prior to joining Agnico Eagle in 1985, Sean was a staff accountant with Clarkson Gordon (Ernst & Young). He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and a graduate of the University of Toronto (B.Comm.).

    Ana Bailão Nov 06, 2019
    Show notes

Join Canadian Club Toronto on November 6 when we host Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão, Chair of the City’s Planning and Housing Committee. As of Summer 2019, Toronto is the fastest growing city in North America. With that growth comes enormous housing pressures. As the current ten year housing strategy concludes, we take time to assess our successes as well as where we can improve, as we prepare for the next ten years along with significant changes in planning regulations. Deputy Mayor Bailão will provide insight and perspective on these issues as they affect our City today and in the years to come. Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão serves as City Councillor for Ward 9 (Davenport). She has been a member of Toronto City Council since 2010 and was re-elected in 2018. As well as serving as a Deputy Mayor, she is the Chair of the Planning and Housing Committee, one of the City’s four critical decision making committees and also serves on a number of the most important Committees at Toronto City Council including Executive Committee and as a member of the Special Committee on Governance. She also serves on the boards of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation and “CreateTO.” Deputy Mayor Bailão also represents the City of Toronto at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Deputy Mayor Bailão was a student at West Toronto Collegiate before studying Sociology at the University of Toronto. She has also completed the Directors Education Program, a joint program of the Institute of Corporate Directors and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, knowledge she now brings to the boards upon which she serves on behalf of the City of Toronto. Prior to public service, Deputy Mayor Bailão achieved considerable success within the private sector, developing leadership and consensus building skills while serving in senior roles within the banking and healthcare IT sectors. With her return to Toronto City Council in 2018, Deputy Mayor Bailão will continue her central role within the City’s government where she is recognized as a decisive, innovative and compassionate decision-maker at Toronto City Council while remaining devoted to serving the Ward 9 (Davenport) community where she grew up and continues to live.
