    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Reversing the Shecession and Rebuilding the Canadian Economy

    If I Had A Billion Dollars Sep 15, 2020
    Show notes

Expert economists and world leaders alike have declared a unanimous truth about the recession caused by COVID-19: its biggest victims are women. Dubbed “The Shecession”, women across the globe continue to struggle with unemployment, the difficult decision to return to work, and ever-changing plans for childcare and schooling. How could 1 billion dollars help to combat root causes of The Shecession? Join Canadian Club Toronto on September 15 as our panelists Kathleen Wynne (Former Premier of Ontario and MPP, Don Valley West), Tina Lee (CEO, T&T Supermarkets), Ken Boessenkool (Partner, KTG Public Affairs Ltd.) and Dawn Desjardins (Deputy Chief Economist, RBC) discuss how they would each use $1 billion to support safe returns to school, increase the accessibility of childcare, institute tax rebates, and more in order to take care of women in this unprecedented financial crisis.

“A book isn’t going to end racism or inequity. But it can be a start.” Michael Bach (Founder, Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion) speaks to business owners and leaders in his new book, Birds of All Feathers, about understanding diversity and inclusion as more than just buzzwords, while providing direction on creating and rebuilding safe, sustainable and truly equitable workplaces. Join Canadian Club Toronto on September 9 when Michael sits down with Jeffrey Orridge (Chairman, Tiidal and Former Commissioner, Canadian Football League) for a discussion on the process of bringing Birds of All Feathers to print, and what organizations need to be focussing on when it comes to D&I initiatives in the immediate future as employees demand actionable and meaningful change.

Confronting Anti Black Racism in Corporate Canada

The BlackNorth Initiative Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

It is another age of reckoning. As a new generation of voices join activists and allies in North America and across the globe, they continue their fight against anti-Black racism in all its forms. There are important discussions being had about reflecting the diversity of our population in the systems that ultimately influence our everyday life: that includes businesses. The lack of racial diversity and the presence of systemic racism is a not so secret reality of Corporate Canada, and boards and executive management teams find themselves overwhelmingly governed by white men. And yet, attempts to address these deep-seated issues have not resulted in lasting and tangible change. As the call for reform grows louder and as the consequences become clearer everyday, we must ask what needs to change in Corporate Canada, and how do we get there from here? Join Canadian Club Toronto on July 16 as we celebrate the launch of The BlackNorth Initiative, a council dedicated to holding corporations accountable for ending anti-Black racism in their organizations, with opening remarks from founder Wes Hall (Kingsdale Advisors/BlackNorth Initiative) and co-chair Rola Dagher (Cisco Canada/BlackNorth Initiative). Our panel discussion, moderated by Dwight Drummond (CBC), will feature Andria Barrett (Diversity Agency/Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce), The Honourable Dr. Donald H. Oliver CM QC and David Simmonds (McKesson Canada), who will speak to their lived experiences and their insight as to what it will take to end anti-Black racism in the corporate world.

The Power of Queer Art in Times of Struggle

    Pandemic’s a Drag Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

The art of drag is more than wigs and high heels. For many queer people, young and old, the first time they feel a true sense of belonging is at a drag show. As drag artists bear their souls and lives on stage to a Britney Spears song, the energy becomes infectious. This unique feeling is what brings audiences back to drag shows every night of the week, and has allowed drag to emerge as a mainstream focal point. But as many drag performers find themselves unable to perform at their usual venues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have had to get creative about the ways they bring their content to drag-loving audiences. From online drag festivals to virtual drag storytime for kids, the innovation of Toronto’s drag performers is a testament to the overwhelming resiliency of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community. Join Canadian Club Toronto on June 11 for our annual Pride event, that will feature fixtures of the Toronto drag scene Erin Brockobić, Priyanka and Yovksa, hosted by ET Canada’s Stephen Krajinovic, to discuss the importance of queer community and art in times of struggle, the role of innovation and technology in drag today, and the power of drag to bring joy.
