    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Show notes

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended world markets and injected unprecedented stress and volatility into the global economy. At the same time, investors have been forced to grapple with persistently low interest rates, sluggish investment returns and a re-ordering of trade relationships which makes the markets even more uncertain than before. Against this complex and rapidly changing backdrop, where are institutional investors finding opportunity and value? How can public pensions continue to invest with discipline and confidence to ensure they can meet their obligations to the everyday Canadians? On October 8, join Bert Clark, President & CEO of the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario, for an in-depth discussion about how the organization is managing more than $70 billion in public pension fund assets and navigating an investing environment unlike any in recent history. The conversation will be moderated by Amanda Lang, BNN Bloomberg anchor and one of Canada’s foremost business journalists. Bert Clark currently serves as President and CEO of the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO). Managing $70.3 billion of assets, IMCO’s mandate is to provide broader public sector institutions with investment management services, including portfolio construction advice, better access to a diverse range of asset classes and sophisticated risk management capabilities. Prior to IMCO, Bert was the President and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario, which is responsible for managing the province of Ontario’s real estate portfolio, lending to municipalities and other public-sector organizations and the delivery of large, complex public infrastructure projects. He was also a Managing Director at Scotiabank, responsible for the North American infrastructure advisory business. Bert has an LLM from Duke University School of Law, an LLB from Queen’s Law School, and a BA (Honours) from McGill University. He is on the Board of Directors at C.D. Howe Institute and a member of the Board of Governors at North York General Hospital.
