    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Join Peter Bethlenfalvy, Ontario’s Minister of Finance, for breakfast at Canadian Club Toronto on November 17, where the Minister will speak to his recently announced Fall Economic Statement and the government’s plan to build Ontario. Peter Bethlenfalvy has been serving as Ontario’s Minister of Finance since December 2020. Prior to his role at Finance, he served in Cabinet as President of the Treasury Board between 2018 and 2021. He was elected as MPP for Pickering—Uxbridge in 2018. Minister Bethlenfalvy is responsible for ensuring Ontario’s long-term fiscal sustainability and providing the fiscal firepower needed to protect the health and wellbeing of Ontarians in the face of COVID-19. During his time as President of the Treasury Board, he was responsible for the province’s expenditure management efforts, the government’s internal audit work, and was the official employer of the province’s public servants. Minister Bethlenfalvy led the creation of Ontario’s Office of the Comptroller General – the first of its kind in any Canadian province – and is Chair of the Future State Modernization Committee. As Minister of Finance, he is responsible for the management of the province’s finances and building the environment for long-term economic prosperity. In the face of COVID-19, Minister Bethlenfalvy is focused on providing the supports Ontario families, workers, and businesses need through the pandemic. As the province charts its long-term recovery, he is working to ensure our health care system, communities and economy are positioned to emerge stronger than ever before.

Following Éric’s remarks, he will be joined by Deborah Flint, President and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, for a fireside conversation entitled “A Partnership in Flight”. A dynamic and engaging leader, Éric Martel is respected globally for his leadership and business acumen. As President and CEO of Bombardier, Mr. Martel’s extensive experience in engineering, aerospace and in global product manufacturing helps lead the international company in serving corporations, aviation charter companies and governments, enabling businesses and individuals to travel safely and efficiently. Known for developing and manufacturing their flagship Global and Challenger business jets, Bombardier’s impact on the economy cannot be understated. With 9,000 employees in Canada, the company is a major global player and contributes significantly to job creation, supply chain vibrancy and export sales. Bombardier’s leadership in sustainable aviation is also of note, with the Global 7500 being the first business jet ever to receive an environmental product declaration. Mr. Martel has decades of experience working with some of the world’s most important corporations, and deep relationships with key stakeholders and customers. His sincere and authentic voice and thoughtful, insightful and engaging approach is appreciated by his peers. He is also a dedicated and committed leader, offering his time to numerous volunteer opportunities. He has been actively involved with Centraide of Greater Montreal for many years and served as co-chair of the fundraising campaign in 2019. He’s also involved with the Montreal Mental Health University Institute Foundation and Robotique FIRST Quebec. He was named one of the five most influential people in Quebec by L’actualité in 2018.

    Join Canadian Club Toronto to hear from David Dodge one of Canada’s most revered economic sages and former Governor of the Bank of Canada in conversation with Kim Parlee, Vice President, TD Wealth to discuss debt ratios, economic policy, what should be next on Canada’s economic agenda and more. A native of Toronto, Mr. Dodge received a bachelor’s degree (honours) from Queen’s University, and a PhD in economics from Princeton. During his academic career, he taught economics at Queen’s University; at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University; at the Faculty of Commerce at the University of British Columbia; and at Simon Fraser University. He also served as Director of the International Economics Program of the Institute for Research on Public Policy. Mr. Dodge has been awarded honorary degrees from a number of Canadian universities. In 2009, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. During a distinguished career in the federal public service, Mr. Dodge held senior positions in the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Anti-Inflation Board, and the Department of Employment and Immigration. After serving in a number of increasingly senior positions at the Department of Finance, including that of G-7 Deputy, he was Deputy Minister of Finance from 1992 to 1997. In that role, he served as a member of the Bank of Canada’s Board of Directors. In 1998 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Health, a position he held until his appointment as Governor of the Bank of Canada. Mr. Dodge, appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada, effective 1 February 2001 for a term of seven years, retired on 31 January 2008. From my 2008 to June 2014, he served as Chancellor of Queen’s University. From 2009 to 2015, he was a member of the board of directors of Canadian Utilities Limited, ATCO Limited arid the Bank of Nova Scotia. Mr. Dodge is Senior Advisor at Bennett Jones LLP one of Canada’s leading law firms. He also serves on the boards of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, Ri.skThinking.AI, and Chairs the National Council of the C.D. Howe Institute.

    Close to 82% of eligible Canadians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, thanks to the dedicated efforts of healthcare workers, vaccine researchers, and countless others. Canadians look forward to what is next but wonder if we will be prepared for pandemics of the future? If Moderna has anything to do with it we will be in a much better position. After providing Canada with millions of vaccine doses Moderna and the Government of Canada announced plans to build an mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility – the first of it’s kind in Canada and one of the first in the world! Join Canadian Club Toronto on October 26 when we host Patricia Gauthier, General Manager, Moderna Canada, in conversation with Carolyn Jarvis, Global News Chief Investigative Correspondent, to hear about Moderna’s contributions to the ongoing battle against COVID-19 and other diseases in a near future, what lessons we can learn from the last two years, and the company’s growth plans in Canada. Patricia Gauthier joined Moderna in 2020 as General Manager to set up and lead Moderna’s Canadian organization. Previously, Patricia Gauthier spent 12 years with GSK, where her roles included Head of Vaccines Business and Head of Government Affairs and Market Access. Patricia Gauthier has lived in the United States, Singapore and France, and in London while working as a lawyer at McCarthy Tetrault. In addition to her legal studies, Patricia Gauthier holds an MBA from HEC Montreal and certifications in Strategic Negotiation from Harvard Business School and Leadership in Context from IMD. She is involved in rethinking innovation and inspiring leadership, including with the Creative Destruction Lab, and was a board member of NEOMED from 2015-2019, which fosters commercial opportunities for biotechnology innovations.
