Leaders Must Always Fight For The Big Picture Apr 12, 2020
    Show notes

It's so easy to get sucked into the minutia of everyday business, to fail in our leadership obligation and become a micro-manager.

Professional aviation demands that pilots stay situationally aware at all times and fight for the big picture.

There are numerous mishaps throughout aviation history where the flight crew got hyperfocused on a certain task or abnormal situation, leading to tragedy. In this episode, I use the mishap of Eastern 401 from December 1972 to highlight the importance of maintaining the big picture, allowing you to keep everyone aligned and empowered towards your intended outcome.

In order to fight for the big picture you have to:

    1. Define your Sandbox. Communicate clearly to create alignment on what you're trying to accomplish and what you're not going to do.
    2. Think strategically & leaving the tactics to your team.
    3. Listen to everyone & everything.
    4. Keep your eye on the future and desired outcome

Jon Schram Explains How to Find & Retain Top Talent That Obsesses Over Customer Service Apr 10, 2020
Show notes Jon Schram is a husband, father, and entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of The Purple Guys, a Midwest-based information technology support company. With over 25 years of Business and IT experience, Jon fully understands the "business of business". Having built three successful startups, he has learned how to leverage technology that supports growth. He also understands that technology is a tool to be used strategically. Jon started The Purple Guys because he found that many small business leaders lacked the internal resources to keep their technology and people fully supported. He was finding that most businesses outsourced their IT only to be met only with frustration due to unreliable, unfriendly, and unpredictable IT Support. Jon's pet-peeve is when an "IT helpdesk" is anything but helpful. Therefore, it's the Purple Guy's mission to make that frustration go away by providing fast and friendly IT Support, for a predictable price. As Jon put's it, "We deliver IT peace-of-mind through our Purple Promise: NoStress Billing, NoWait Response, NoLimit Access. Instead of feeling frustrated, your focus will be on growing your business."

Kelley Earnhardt Miller Shares Her Lessons on How to Win in Business & Life Apr 06, 2020
    Show notes

As co-owner and general manager of JR Motorsports, Kelley Earnhardt Miller knows what hard work, dedication, and thriving in a "man's world" looks like. Born into racing royalty, growing up on the racetrack surrounded by and competing with NASCAR's greatest, Earnhardt Miller learned how to stand on her own merit with a clear understanding that it was going to take a lot to keep up with the family legacy.

Now, she is sharing some of those hard-earned lessons with the world in her new book, Drive: 9 Lessons to Win in Business and in Life.

"As the daughter of a NASCAR superstar, my name has always had the power to open doors for me," says Earnhardt Miller. "Though I have long had a personal passion for the sport and working in the industry was a natural fit, I never wanted to ride through my career in the passenger seat of my father's legacy. I wanted to work hard and earn every position I ever held. That's the way my dad always wanted it. These nine lessons have changed the way I lead in business and the way I live my personal life. They're lessons I wish someone had shared with me before I learned them the hard way, which is why I now gladly pass them along."

In her highly anticipated book, Earnhardt Miller shares the most important lessons she's learned over the course of her life that have impacted her incredible success:

    • Being authentic and approachable - Letting go to move forward
    • Customizing your communication - Aiming for the win-win
    • Managing your emotions - Balancing your work with your life

According to Earnhardt Miller, these lessons aren't a blueprint for success; they are the values and principles that have personally shaped her, not only as a high-profile executive but as a daughter, sister, wife, and mother. She firmly believes that leading a life of passion and integrity outside of the office is just as important as reaching the top of the corporate ladder.

It's Not Your Right to Challenge, It's Your Obligation Mar 26, 2020
    Show notes

The best leadership cultures are those that encourage their workforce to respectfully challenge the status quo.

It's the best way to get the best results, build sustainability, and prevent mistakes.

It takes a tremendous amount of intentionality, confidence, & courage to create this environment of freedom.

But it is an absolute requirement if you're going to create cultures of decentralized control.

Decentralized authority and decision making is the most effective way for organizations to deal with the demands and chaos of business.

As a senior leader, you must be prepared to encourage your people to respectfully challenge you.

As a middle manager or below, you have to have the courage to speak up when you disagree or have a different perspective.

You also have to be prepared to support whatever decision is made (assuming the decision is legal, ethical, & safe) and carry it out as if it was your own. In this episode, I break down this concept and the power of creating a culture where everyone realizes that it's not your right to challenge, it's your obligation.

Like It or Not, You're a Role Model Mar 18, 2020
    Show notes

Whether you know it; whether you like it or not: You are a Role Model!

It's about "Setting the Example"; a basic leadership fundamental. I usually lead off with this tenant in all of my leadership talks.

It's one of those basic, common sense, leadership principles that when we hear it we say to ourselves, "Of course, I understand that".

But successful leaders realize that you have to be intentional about setting the example.

It's easy to get complacent and forget that we are always on a stage; that one of the prices of leadership is personal freedom and being under a constant spotlight.

In this latest Dose of Leadership podcast episode I discuss the following concepts as it relates to "Setting the Example":

    1. You are a role model: Whether you like it or not, or realize it or not, you must realize that leadership positions demand that you accept the responsibility as a role model. I find it amusing that certain celebrities, politicians, & athletes claim that they have a right to be something different out of the spotlight. Hogwash; one of the realities we have to deal with when we accept a leadership role is a constant scrutiny and visibility to those we are accountable for. Therefore you must be the same person "on & off stage" and hold yourself to a higher standard.
    2. Perception is reality: And since we are constantly "on stage" we have to be "maniacal" about how we are perceived. One of the unfortunate realities of life is that many times the facts don't simply matter. If you are perceived to be a thief, liar, untrustworthy, etc that is the "truth" in someone else's eyes. Therefore you must be diligent in your behavior and constantly ask yourself how you are being perceived. Facts are important, facts are your friends, but never forget the power of perception and optics.
    3. Attention to detail: Because perception is reality, paying strict attention to the smallest of details will often set you apart from the pack. People will notice how you are dressed, if you are chewing gum, if you swear, if you leave early from work, etc. Be "maniacal" about the small stuff and you will be noticed for your efforts.
    4. Avoid "appearing" managerial: Being a leader is about position or title; it's about action. I've seen many a leader think that their position relies on delegating and relying on their positional authority to get things done. In reality, there will be times where you actively need to show your people how you want things done. I'm all for setting the intent and leaving the "how" up to your folks; I hate micro-management. But, if you don't like how something is being done, roll up your sleeves and get down in the trenches and show them how you expect it to be done. If you don't like how the toilets are getting cleaned, there should be nothing stopping you to show them exactly how you want it to be done. Your position doesn't put you above anything you are asking your folks to do.

At the end of the day, Setting the Example is simply doing the right thing, even when no-one is looking.

How to Lead in a Crisis Mar 10, 2020
    Show notes

It's inevitable that at some point in your life you will face a situation that will require you to remain calm under pressure.

Your child is choking, a customer is irate and irrational, a team member is not pulling his weight, you come upon a car accident, you fly your aircraft through a flock of birds on take-off and lose all of your engines…

How you respond to stressful situations will make or break you as a leader.

As leaders, you have no choice but to remain calm, regardless of the situation. Therefore it's required leaders learn how to compartmentalize their emotions and fear.

A compartmentalization technique I learned in aviation is what's called "Hack the Clock".

In this podcast, I discuss compartmentalization techniques that I learned in flight school that can help you remain calm in stressful situations.
